Guide-operated boats wind along canals situated beneath the same miniature landscapes visible from the Casey Jr. Circus Train. This ride, offering stellar examples of bonsai cultivation, selective pruning, and miniaturization, is a must for landscape gardening enthusiasts. The landscapes include scenes from more recent Disney features, in addition to those from such classics as The Wind in the Willows and The Three Little Pigs.

Touring Tips

The boats are much more comfortable than the train; the view of the miniatures is better; and the pace is more leisurely. On the downside, the lines are long, and if not long, definitely slow moving. The ride itself also takes a lot of time. Our recommendation is to ride Casey Jr. if you have children or are in a hurry. Take the boat if your party is all adults or your pace is more leisurely. Best of all, the boats’ pilots deliver live narration that (depending on the driver) can be delightfully droll. If you ride the canal boats, try to get on before 10:30 a.m. If the queue isn't prohibitive, this ride is especially appealing after dusk, when the creative lighting adds a whole new dimension. Closed during parades.

The Imagineers used all sorts of tricks when they were building Disneyland's Storybook Land Canal Boat ride, even going so far as to find miniature redwoods to plant along the riverbank so the trees would match the scale of the tiny houses that line the canal. One fellow, looking for a way to make a miniature church roof look old and weathered, really went above and beyond the call of duty. Research revealed that urine has an extremely corrosive effect on metal - so guess how this Imagineer finished every lunch hour?
