While we’ve never been impressed by the Rainforest Cafes, a lot of our readers rave about them. The shopping and the kid appeal must be the attractions, because it certainly isn’t the food: Preparations are spotty, and waits can be horrendous.

Setting and Atmosphere

It’s always packed, and there’s usually a wait, but families flock to this now-familiar restaurant for big plates of food in a noisy dining room with lots to keep the kids entertained. Look for the giant volcano that can be seen, and heard, erupting all over the Marketplace; the smoke coming from the volcano is nonpolluting, in accordance with the restaurant’s conservation theme. The dining room looks like a jungle—imagine all the silk plants in the world tacked to the ceiling—complete with animatronic elephants, bats, and monkeys (not the most realistic we’ve seen). There’s occasional thunder and even some rainfall.

House Specialties

House-made crab dip, Caribbean coconut shrimp, burgers, ribs, brownie cake with ice cream.

Other Recommendations

After the wait you endure, a chair and some sustenance are all the entertainment you’ll need. If you’re willing to pay to avoid the long wait, stop by the day before and buy a Landry’s Select Club membership for $25. By presenting your card on the day you want to dine, you’ll be seated much faster (and get 10% off retail and other benefits).
