Pollo Campero/BabyCakes NYC to Close in Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney

BabycakesDisney Springs construction is currently going on everywhere at Downtown Disney, and one area that’s been on the demolition list has been the Pollo Campero building (which is the former location a McDonald’s at Downtown Disney). This building not only houses this Latin-inspired chicken restaurant, but also Bodie’s All-American and BabyCakes NYC.

It appears that things must progress with Disney Springs, so these three restaurants will be closing. Their last day of operation is scheduled for March 19, 2014.

To many, the biggest loss will be BabyCakes NYC, which is a gluten-free, vegan, organic, and diabetic-friendly bakery that bakes fresh products daily. BabyCakes will continue to provide gluten-free products to select Walt Disney World Resort food courts and restaurants. These include:

  • The Beach Club Marketplace at Disney’s Beach Club Resort
  • The Boardwalk Bakery at Disney’s Boardwalk
  • The Gardens Kiosk at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
  • The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Landscape of Flavors at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
  • The End Zone at Disney’s All Star Sports Resort

There is no sign of whether any of these three establishments will return when Disney Springs officially debuts.

Well that truly sucks. I love eating at those places. Now I will actually have to use my baby cakes cookbooks. Man. Too many changes. No QS in that area.

This just sucks because it’s really the only counter service place at dtd.

Wow my reaction is the complete opposite. Am glad to see the back of them, poor quality for DD in my opinion. Better CS there with Wolfgang Puck & Cookes. Hopefully Ghiradellis can expand its range to serve the baby cakes advocates.

Babycakes is well known for its ability to *safely* provide a large selection of allergy-friendly baked goods. Frankly, I don’t see Ghiardelli (or any other mainstream store) having the interest in putting in the huge amount of effort that it would take to replicate what Babycakes provided.

Am going to really miss the gluten/sugar free cakes from Babycakes – what a shame it’s going 🙁

I hope they put something kid-friendly and QS in it’s place. It’s not easy finding QS Downtown that my girl will eat.

I hope Babycakes finds another storefront! They provided a vegan cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday at Akershus and it was amazing!!

Stinks! I love Babycakes and the falafel sandwich at Bodie’s was so good! At least I can still get Babycakes at the resorts, and hopefully they’ll be replaced by something equally wonderful.

I am so disappointed to hear that Babycakes NYC is closing. We are arriving on 3/23 and my son with a severe dairy allergy was soooooo looking forward to visiting during our trip. 🙁 It’s so rare for him to be able to walk into a bakery and choose whatever he likes.

No allergies here. We just loved BabyCakes. We would stock up on our DVC trips and have wonderful breakfast/snacks during the trips. Would love see them relocate somewhere on property.
The counters at the resorts didn’t have near the selections as the Pollo location. Hopefully they will ramp up.

Nooooooo!!! A true GF establishment! Have ordered such lovely cakes from them. Oh I sure do hope they find another location nearby to use!

So sad to hear this, I do hope Disney recognizes the growing need for allergen free foods and relocates Babycakes. While I disliked the food at Pollo myself, it is the only DTD place my son could/would eat. He has several medical needs and is so limited as it is. This may very well change our future vacation plans, since my son needs to eat while on vacation. Most likely we’ll avoid DTD altogether now. We used to go there every other night of our 8 day vacations. I do hope they come up with another family friendly QS in that area with food for little ones and people with special dietary needs.

I was at Downtown Disney last night, the line at Earl of Sandwich was out of control. Clearly there is a need for quick service dining. Hopefully Disney pops out another tent or food truck to pick up the slack.

Well, shoot. I liked Pollo Campero. Their grilled chicken was a nice alternative to the usual fatty fast food crap.

  • March 6, 2014 at 7:39 pm

This is so disappointing. I hope Babycakes ends up getting a new location. We normally make several trips to DTD when we go to WDW just to stock up on vegan treats while we are there & usually buy some to take home as well. I’ve seen the mini cupcakes & cookies for sale at the locations mentioned above but haven’t seen donuts or the cookie sandwiches 🙁

Has anyone heard whether they will still make cakes for delivery to the restaurants/resorts?

  • March 7, 2014 at 9:25 am

At least they will still be in resort shops. I wonder where they will be baking then? Also I hope this doesn’t screw up our wedding cake for May. I will be missing my cookie sandwiches this spring.

Pollo Campero will be very much missed by my family!

  • March 7, 2014 at 9:46 pm

As a vegan, I won’t miss babycakes at all. The first few months they were open, the employees were fantasic, but the service has been absolutely horrible the last four or five trips we’ve taken. There were only slices of bread and donuts available – none of the cookie sandwiches that babycakes NYC is known for – and the staff seemed too good to help us. Good riddance. I’d rather make due in the park than be treated like garbage.

Our family will miss them terribly! We are hopeful there could be a plan for them to stay around. Love ordering gfree bday & holiday treats for my celiac kids. Please find a way to stick around!!

This stinks! This was a cheaper alternative at Downtown. And so delicious! I am very very sad about this!

I was starving and decided to go to Pollo Campero and then Baby cakes like my family always does on our Disney trips. I was totally bummed to see it all gone. My son and I have no other good gluten free options in Downtown Disney. It was also affordable…I’m going to really miss it:(

I am very disappointed to hear that BabyCakes has lost their storefront. This was the only place that I was able to walk in to and be able to eat any item in the display case.

I am glad to hear that they will still provide limited items but will definitely miss the variety that they previously offered.

I would really love to see them open up the bakery again in another site.
