It won’t be a long, long time until we all return to a galaxy far, far away. So if you are looking to gear up for The Force Awakens, there are now some brand-new Star Wars merchandise opportunities to explore at Walt Disney World.
First up, the building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that once held the AFI Showcase of film props, and more recently served as Wandering Oaken’s souvenir shop, has recently been reborn as Watto’s Grotto.
Named after the one-time owner of Anakin Skywalker from The Phantom Menace, this new temporary store has a wide selection of both Disney-exclusive Star Wars merchandise, and more mainstream toys based on the upcoming Episode VII.
For a short-term shop, the space is fairly well themed to the planet of Tatooine where Watto hails from.
Outside, you’ll find an authentic full-sized Snowspeeder from The Empire Strikes Back. This prop was originally seen along the tram route of the now-extinct Backlot Tour, and has been relocated outside the store with new signage that pays tribute to vintage Topps trading cards.
We’d expect Watto’s Grotto to close once the new Star Wars Launch Bay exhibit opens inside DHS’s old Disney Animation attraction later this year, so check it out while you can.
If you want to shop for new Disney Star Wars merchandise without using a park admission, head over to the West Side of Disney Springs. The D Street store across from Starbucks has been almost entirely taken over by the Star Wars saga.
I especially like these “it’s a small galaxy after all” prints, which pay tribute to the art style of Mary Blair. Too cute!
Aside from a few exclusive Disney Star Wars items, much of this merchandise can be found online and in your local toy stores. But remember that you can use your Walt Disney World annual pass for a discount and save a few galactic credits on your purchases.
Happy shopping, and may the force be with you!
