How Crowded Was Disney World Last Week?
How Crowded Was Disney World Last Week?

Crowds across Walt Disney World Resort were slightly lower than expected overall in the early part of last week and higher than expected in the latter half of the week. Again last week we saw record breaking wait times for this time of year. On Monday for example, At Magic Kingdom we saw a crowd level ‘9’. The same day last year was a crowd level ‘1’. Animal Kingdom saw some wild swings in wait times day-to-day although four of the seven days the Disney World Crowd Calendar was within one of what we observed at that park.

We recently added a collection of videos to our YouTube channel that show samples of walkthroughs at the Magic Kingdom during various crowd level days. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Let’s look at how the crowd levels stacked up each day last week on the Disney World Crowd Calendar Report:

Wait times at Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios were very close to what the Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted on Monday while our estimates for the other two parks ended up too high. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas party at Magic Kingdom seemed to keep wait times low during the day with averages like 24 at Splash Mountain and 35 at Space Mountain – although this trend would not continue during the week as we will see.

On Monday, despite a very crowded Magic Kingdom we saw the resort-wide crowd level dip one level lower than what the Disney World Crowd Calendar expected. Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Winnie the Pooh had wait time averages at a level ’10’ while Expedition Everest at 21 minutes, was a crowd level ‘1’.

Magic Kingdom’s Main Street, U.S.A. was crowded on Tuesday to make an appropriate backdrop for the Christmas Day Parade taping to be broadcast by ABC on December 25th but wait times stayed moderate as expected. In fact, despite wide differences between park crowd levels last week, Tuesday was a strange exception with all parks hitting a level ‘5’ on our scale.

Wednesday brought more taping of the Christmas parade at Magic Kingdom but this time wait times were much higher. The increase is more due to the lack of a Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party rather than the parade taping itself. Animal Kingdom was the best choice again with averages like 20 minutes at DINOSAUR and 25 at Expedition Everest.

Thursday’s wait times were well above average for a Thursday in November. Epcot and Hollywood Studios wait time averages were particularly surprising. We saw Test Track average 70 minutes (predicted 56) and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster average 51 (predicted 42).

Friday’s crowds were similar to Thursday’s with Hollywood Studios standing out as the busiest park. We have seen Magic Kingdom stay very crowded during the day when it hosts Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party this year. Historically, the park remains fairly empty when the park hours are shortened to support the evening activities – not this year!

Disney World Crowd Calendar predictions for Saturday did well at Magic Kingdom and Epcot but missed the mark at Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom was particularly nuts with wait time averages like 77 minutes at Kilimanjaro Safaris and 28 at Kali River Rapids. This on a day without Extra Magic Hour or any other park condition that would suggest the largest crowd of the week at that park.

What to Expect This Week
November 15 to 21, 2015

This week is the last week before Thanksgiving at Disney World. Crowds should be steady if not very busy this week. Using a touring plan remains as your best defence against whatever crowd you encounter.

I picked Animal Kingdom on Saturday based on the site’s predictions and used my touring plan. Even with relaxed walking speed, it was hard to get places with so many people and strollers! I think giving everyone park hopper with free dining makes it even harder to predict the crowds. I saw it all, but it’s frustrating to do something for the first time and pull kids out of school because it will be better now than summer crowds, only to find it’s the same as the summer just 15 degrees cooler. For the record I picked this week long before free dining was announced. I would gladly pay the $1000 to have the 3 and 4s that were predicted. I would not come back during free dining. On the positive side, having a great touring plan, and sheer determination helped us do what we wanted and my kids had a blast. I’m grateful this site helped me get through it all.

We were at Magic Kingdom on 11/8 and it was soooo empty! the park opened at 8am, and we were able to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride at 930am with only a 25 minute posted wait (it was actually only 20!). We pretty much walked on everything all day long. I was suprised since it was the first night of MVMCP.

We were at animal kingdom on the 14th and I am glad to see it was an 8. It was difficult to get around, and that park is always difficult to get around. I knew it must have been crowded because they extended the operating hours in the middle of the afternoon. Didn’t help much because they didn’t add any new shows (to 7:30) and still closed all of the animal exhibits at 4:45. I don’t see how they are going to make this an all day park. There is nothing to do after 4:45

Argh, I added the (to 7:30) to the wrong place. They extended operating hours to 7:30 is what I meant.
