DVC Monthly Preview – June 2019

Welcome to the June installment of our monthly Disney Vacation Club preview. This month, we round up the latest news, including dates for the DVC member cruises. We’ll also take a look at some common DVC owner questions.

Booking Windows

Here are some booking window dates to keep in mind. For your home resort (11-month booking window), in June, you will be able to book for dates in May 2020. For all other DVC resorts (seven-month booking window), this month you will be able to book for dates in January 2019. Bear in mind that we’re now well into the range for booking in the Halloween and Christmas season 2019 for even the seven-month window. If you’re planning to enjoy the park decor and parties during the holidays, now’s the time to plan.

Booking a last-minute trip directly through Disney, there is virtually no DVC studio availability in June. There may be some studios at Saratoga Springs throughout July. There are one- and two-bedroom villas open at Saratoga Springs during most of June and July, as well as sporadic one- and two-bedroom openings at Old Key West, and some Grand Villas at Bay Lake Tower. There is minimal availability elsewhere.

If you want to expand your options, you may want to explore renting points as an alternative to booking through Disney. (If you rent points through the affiliate link to David’s DVC rentals, TouringPlans receives a commission.)

DVC and Disney News

The biggest Disney story in ages is happening NOW, with this week’s opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland. We’ve got tons of coverage of the attractions, atmosphere, food, merchandise, and more.

Back in our November 2018 DVC Preview, we talked about the DVC “pool hopping” benefit where members are allowed to use the pools at resorts other than the one they’re staying at. In a bit of bad news, DVC has quietly modified these rules, now eliminating the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa from the list of acceptable places to hop. Members may now only use the Grand Floridian Pools if they’re staying there.

If you’re up for a last-minute trip, Disney Cruise Line is offering discounts of 30% for DVC members on select sailings including Bahamian trips on the Dream on June 28, July 7, and July 12, 2019, and on Mexican Riviera sailings on the Wonder on October 20 and October 27, 2019. Naturally, there’s some fine print. For all the details or to book these cruises, call Member Services at 800-800–9800. Additionally, there’s an extensive list of Adventures by Disney trips, including some AbD river cruises, that offer 20% off for DVC members. Call Member Services for the scoop.

DVC sales are now in full swing for the new Riviera Resort, opening this winter. If you want a jump on buying merchandise for this property, head on over to Mouse Gear at Epcot to find Riviera tees, mugs, and other items.

If you’re thinking of staying at Old Key West, take a look at our video tour of a one-bedroom unit there. Old Key West has some of the largest rooms on Walt Disney World property and are an economical use of your points. We also have a video tour of the entire Yacht & Beach Club resort. It’s not DVC specific, but many of the Beach Club’s amenities are available to guests staying at the Beach Club DVC villas.

Reminders

There is limited availability on the DVC member cruises on Disney Cruise Line. The member cruises currently available are a 7-night Bermuda sailing from October 5-12, 2019, out of New York on the Disney Magic and a 7-night Alaska cruise out of Vancouver from August 24-31, 2020. In addition to all the fun of a regular DCL voyage, member cruises include loads of perks not available to regular guests, including enhanced stateroom gifts, presentations by Disney-affiliated celebrities, member receptions, and other surprises. Members may book up to four staterooms for these sailings. Call member services at 800-800-9800 for more information. If you decide to book a member cruise (or any other Disney cruise sailing), you may want to kickstart your planning with the Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line 2019, co-authored by yours truly.

One of the perkier perks of DVC membership is Moonlight Magic Nights, evenings where members get the run of a park, plus lots of snacks, for freeeeee! Yep, it’s like those big-dollar paid late-night evenings, but at no extra cost. While there is no fee, advance registration is required and availability is limited. The 2019 Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot nights have now passed. Animal Kingdom will host three events: July 18, August 8, and August 22, 2019, with registration opening on June 5 for members with a WDW hotel reservation, and on June 12 for all members. The last Moonlight Magic events of the year will take place at Typhoon Lagoon on September 18 and October 16, 2019, with registration opening on August 14 for members with WDW hotel reservation, and on August 28 for all members.

DVC FAQ

Here’s where we tackle a frequently asked question or two about Disney Vacation Club.

Question: I’m going on a Disney Cruise. Will my DVC membership get me any benefits related to this?

Answer: You’re in luck! DVC member can save 10% on select merchandise purchases of $50 or more aboard Disney Cruise Line ships. This offer is valid at Mickey’s Mainsail, Mickey’s Mates, Radar Trap, Sea Treasures, Treasure Ketch, Vista Gallery, White Caps, and Whozits & Whatzits. There will be some items excluded from the discount, but most of the Disney-branded items should qualify. Be sure to ask at the register before you purchase.

DVC members may also qualify for a 10% discount on some onboard photography services and for a 20% on some spa services while the ship is in port. Again, be sure to ask at the point of purchase.

Also note that a few times during every sailing, the onboard DVC reps will host an informational seminar. There’s usually good snacks and free drinks, and they ALWAYS hand out swag. I’ve gotten tons of DVC water bottles and ball caps from attending the DVC seminars on the DCL ships.

That does it for this month’s wrap-up. Got any DVC questions? Current members, do you have any advice for someone deciding whether to purchase points for the first time? Let us know below.
