Welcome to our new monthly feature, the Disney Store merchandise report. We’ll be looking at merchandise that’s available in the physical store locations in the United States. There is some overlap on Disney-branded items with what’s offered in the stores in the Disney theme parks and resorts, and there is lots of overlap with what’s offered online at shopDisney.com, but not everything that’s online is in the stores, not everything that’s in the stores is online, not everything that’s in the stores is in the parks, and so on. See below for some general tips on shopping for Disney merchandise.
Photos of the in-store merchandise will primarily come from my “home” Disney Store location, the flagship store in Times Square, New York City.
One particularly cool experience you can have at the Times Square Disney Store is that they often run promotions that involve having your photo posted on the BIG screen out front. It’s like having your own billboard in Times Square, well, for about 30 seconds. Right now, they’re running a promotion where, for $20, you can have a souvenir photo taken with a Toy Story backdrop, which will also appear on the storefront.
While there are still some vestiges of merchandise tied in to the recently opened Aladdin live action film, the real merchandise push at the Disney Stores right now is Toy Story 4. There is themed signage EVERYWHERE, as well as many items branded with Toy Story characters old and new, including our very (very, very, very) unofficial TouringPlans mascot, Forky. (Seriously, we’re just amused by Forky. We have no claim to him whatsoever.)
The exact mix of plush characters changes depending on what films are in recent release, but you can alway expect to see a selection of plush toys from classic Disney movies alongside current favorites. You can often find very small plush toys with odd configurations. On this trip we found plush donuts wearing character costumes and tiny plush with very big feet. Clearly even toy designers get bored sometimes and need to entertain themselves.
Themed Tees and Other Shirts
Some are standard, some are sassy, but if you want to wear a Disney character, they’ve got you covered.
It wouldn’t be Disney without princesses.
Star Wars and Marvel
Even though June is still early summer here in the Northeast, the selection of beach towels and swimsuits is already diminishing. I’m also glad to see that the Pride month promotion that’s happening in the parks is also going on in the Disney stores in other locations.
Tips for Shopping
While there are no annual pass discounts for shopping at the Disney Stores, there are often ways to get discounts. Typically, guests paying with a Disney Visa card can get 10% off in-store purchases over $50. And there are almost always free shipping codes when shopping online at shopDisney.com for purchases over $75.
Additionally, when you’re shopping for big-ticket items in the parks, it may pay for you to make a quick visit to shopDisney.com before making your purchase, particularly if you’re buying something toward the end of its season. For example, we found a Dooney & Bourke purse online for much less than it was priced in the parks.
Do any of these items hit your shopping hot button? Do you have the same love/hate relationship with Forky that we do? Let us know in the comments.
