#AskIt — Going to Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival in 2018?

Labor Day weekend is right around the corner, and that means fall is on the way. Even though Florida hasn’t quite got the memo yet to usher in fall temperatures, Epcot is set to kick of the 2018 Food and Wine Festival. Now in its 23rd year, this event has become a highlight for many people, and some people make a special trip just for it. Don’t believe me? Try to get a last-minute room at any Crescent Lake resort. No, seriously, try it, and if you succeed, can I crash on your sofabed?

Speaking of festivals, last week we asked whether Epcot should go to year-round festivals. Results were a bit closer on the blog than on Twitter, but the outcome was the same. A majority of you said “no”, and that you like having some down time at Epcot. In fact, some of you think there’s already too much festival time in the calendar. (My favorite comment, “When everyone’s super, no one is”.) Others felt that having the festivals adds something, whether it’s a unique “extra” to your Epcot day or things that keep the attention of kids. Festival of the Arts, for many, has become a favorite festival, but others like that festivals throughout the year provide a great way to mix up dining options if you’re not looking for places to eat in Epcot.

  • This will be my 23rd year at Food & Wine. I enjoy strolling around World Showcase in search of nibbles, but my favorite part of the festival is the special dining events. Sadly, this year, there seems to be a dearth of such events. We’re only really going to one event, an Italian Regional Lunch. Normally, we’d be signed up for 8-10 such events over two or more trips down (from NJ.) This year I did a solo trip to the Arts Festival. For the past several years, we’ve done a long weekend for Flower & Garden. I think next year we’ll swap out two weeks at F&W for a long weekend at the Arts Festival and a week at Flower & Garden. Then if something radical happens for next year’s F&W, we can still do a long weekend. Otherwise, it is starting to look like F&W just isn’t as engaging (for us) as it once was.

  • Yay – going twice for the first time ever (and mostly by coincidence). One is a 21st birthday trip with my neice and family and the other is for a conference… can’t wait!

  • Just coincidentally. We’ll be down in Orlando for my parents’ 50th anniversary in October, so we’re going.

  • Going to Orlando in September but will be spending the whole trip at Universal. And maybe the 30s gangster-themed dinner theater.

  • Last year I took my daughter to Disney for her senior year college fall break. We initially were going for the MNSSHP but realized we could add Food and Wine. What a great weekend! We decided Food and Wine was the best part of the trip. We both want to go back but will have to wait for her to get some vacation days now. So not this year, but I would definitely make a trip just for Food and Wine in the future.

  • What’s the chicken dish on your lead picture and where can I get it?

    • Alas, that was a little Easter Egg for my daughter–it was one of only a couple foods last year she liked, and isn’t going to be returning last year. (It was at the Farm Fresh booth. Without the gravy on it, it was her idea of a good meal with minimal flavor, which is a plus in her book.) She looked over this year’s menus and doesn’t see much of anything that she thinks would be worth trying, so I decided to sneak the photo in there as her way of voting–not going this year unless they change their minds and bring that back. 😉

      That said, if you want a dish similar to that and have the chance to swing by Disney Springs, run–do not walk–(okay maybe walk because of safety, but you get the idea) to Homecomin’ for brunch and order the Hallelujah biscuit. The name is accurate for the reaction most people have to it.

  • We will be in Orlando during food and wine, but we will not be visiting Epcot. We used to love food and wine but it has gotten too expensive for us to justify going.

  • Love Food & Wine, but we go in January/February now for cooler temps. We are happy for the arts festival now to give us a F&W-type event when we go.
