If your Instagram feed looks anything like ours, it’s 90% gorgeous Disney cupcakes with descriptions of how delicious they are.
This isn’t that kind of post.
We found a much-hyped cupcake that we didn’t love to eat and, shockingly, photographed as sloppy and ill made. The Carousel Cupcake at Gasparilla Island Grill at the Grand Floridian was not worth the hike and fell short of the usual joy we experience when we reach into the pastry case at this quick-service joint.
Let’s start with the appearance. We picked three colors to see if the chocolate horse on top came in different flavors. It doesn’t.
The mold work on the horses is the most well-executed part of this $5.99 sweet. Even using one of the most picturesque resorts on a bright spring day couldn’t help the icing work and lopsided horse placement. We’re assuming they will become less wonky and more worthy of their home as the pastry team assembling them has practice. They are very new after all.
Sadly, the haunted carousel (that’s what I decided they looked like) didn’t taste up to the usual Disney standards. It was about as good as what you could make at home with that boxed confetti sprinkle cake mix. It wasn’t miserable, but it’s surely not worth the trip, price, or the calories in our opinion. The vanilla filling was odd and didn’t add to the flavor. It just made that bite mushy and not in a good way.
So, skip this one and head to the Contemporary for that jazzy new Imagination Pink cupcake instead!
