Keel Laying Takes Place and Ship Name is Revealed
Disney Cruise Line’s third Wish-class ship reached a major milestone on March 20, 2024 with its keel laying ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard. And along with this announcement, Disney released several details about this brand-new ship, including the name – the Disney Destiny! The Destiny is scheduled to set sail in 2025.
Disney Destiny Theme
The Destiny will be themed around the light-side / dark-side conflict between Heroes and Villains. Imagineering teams “were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story” and guests may expect experiences and entertainment focused on heroes and villains alike. Some specific names that were floated included “The Lion King”, “Hercules”, and “One Hundred and One Dalmations”. The reveal video below features Hercules and Hades, with cameos from Scar and Cruella de Vil.
Who else is in the release video? Why, it’s Captain Minnie, of course! Donning a cape, as befits any hero, Minnie is all set to charge forth and lead her guests on epic cruise vacations. Heroes vs. Villains is a tale as old as time, but Captain Minnie is more than prepared. Check out her action-ready pose on the bow artwork and ship’s commemorative coin shown below.
Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King
One of the three rotational dining rooms will be Lion King themed, a new concept for DCL. To be called Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King, this venue will feature live musicians and storytellers taking guests through The Lion King soundtrack. Performers will use authentic African instruments and theatrical props to represent characters and convey the story. Songs you’ll hear will include “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata,” a mash-up of “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Be Prepared, as well as a rendition of “He Lives in You,” a song that appears in the Broadway version of The Lion King.
The other two main dining restaurants will be Worlds of Marvel and 1923, both of which appear on the Disney Wish. This iteration of 1923 will include art and artifacts related to Disney and Pixar villains and heroes.
The adult dining venues on the Destiny will match those on the other Wish-class ships: Palo Steakhouse, Enchanté, and The Rose cocktail bar.
Edna á la Mode Sweets
I am crazy in love with the name of the Destiny’s onboard sweet shop. Edna Mode is of course the true hero of The Incredibles animated films. It’s only fitting that she is honored with a namesake onboard location.
Edna’s lab, where the famed fashion designer whips up outfits for the world famous Supers, will be transformed into a confectionary offering handmade gelato, ice cream, cookies, candies and specialty treats. The decor will feature bolts of fabric and costume models along with sculptures of both Edna and Super baby Jack-Jack. Num nums for everyone!
Café Megara and Café Merida
Just off the Grand Hall atrium, you’ll find two walk-up cafés named for heroic women. Café Megara pays homage to the diva from Hercules with a “Greco Disco” vibe. Café Merida will use a Celtic-inspired design to pay homage to the redheaded star of the Pixar film Brave. Both spots will serve a wide variety of coffees, teas, specialty drinks, and snacks.
Staterooms and Royal Suites
The staterooms on the Destiny will be similar to those of other Disney Cruise Line ships, particularly the Wish and the Treasure. Most will include split bathrooms, making it easy for two people to get ready at once, and many will include connecting doors to other staterooms, making it easy for larger families to travel together.
Lavishly appointed concierge staterooms and suites will include Fantasia theming, with elegant, watercolor-style artwork illustrating elements from Disney’s classic film.
Concierge guests aboard the Disney Destiny will receive a premium service and access to exclusive areas and amenities, including a concierge lounge and private sun deck. Among the concierge staterooms and suites will be four royal suites inspired by Hercules and The Incredibles, offering accommodations and views of heroic proportions.
Additionally, seven special oceanview rooms located directly above the bridge, adorned in the distinctive iconography of Pixar’s The Incredibles, will provide floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean.
Onboard Lounges
Three of the Destiny’s lounges now have names: DeVil’s Piano Bar, Cask and Cannon, and Haunted Mansion Parlor.
DeVil’s Piano Bar is obviously named for the 101 Dalmatians bad girl Cruella DeVil. This bar will be decorated in Cruella’s signature color palette of red with accents of black and white (and likely a few spots for good measure). An eye-catching spotted piano will steal the show at the center of the space, where you’ll be able to hear live music from jazz to Disney show tunes. The menu will include champagne, chic cocktails, and on-trend martinis.
Cask and Cannon is the Destiny’s sports bar. Inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions and films, this pub will be an eclectic watering hole furnished with treasures “acquired” (read: pillaged and pilfered) during the pirates’ many voyages around the globe. Here, you and your fellow buccaneers will regale one another with tales of your high seas’ adventures; cheer and jeer during live televised sporting events; and indulge in an extensive menu of rare, specialty and vintage rums and a selection of “bootlegged” brews developed specially for the venue and served – in true pirate style – straight from the barrel.
Haunted Mansion Parlor, which will also appear on the upcoming DCL Treasure ship, will be themed to everyone’s favorite haunted attraction. At the Haunted Mansion Parlor, grim grinning guests will sample a selection of ghostly cocktails that capture the spirit of the story, while legendary characters from Haunted Mansion attractions around the world come out to socialize in mysterious ways (along with a few new seafaring arrivals).
Just off the Grand Hall on decks four and five, Saga (similar to Luna on the Disney Wish) will be a central hub for daytime family activities and adult-exclusive evening entertainment. The two-story, state-of-the-art venue will host a variety of interactive shows and events in an elevated environment also inspired by the architecture of Wakanda.
The Sanctum will be Disney Cruise Line’s first lounge inspired by the sorcerers and artifacts of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange. Like all Sanctorums, this centrally located venue will contain mystical items designed to aid sorcerers in protecting the world – but it will also be home to entertainment; an array of cocktails, spirits and coffees; and surprises from Doctor Strange’s New York Sanctum, including a circular mirror behind the bar that evokes the building’s iconic window.
Adults will indulge in sun-drenched serenity at Quiet Cove, a peaceful refuge set away from the bustle of family activities that will feature a luxurious infinity pool, poolside bar and chic café.
AquaMouse and Other Water Features
Like her sister the Wish and the Treasure, the Disney Destiny will include an AquaMouse water slide. This signature attraction at sea, will feature a film presentation while you slide. The film, “Sing a Silly Song” includes encounters with Disney villains. Before your family completes the 760-foot-long water ride towering above the upper decks, you will join Mickey and Minnie Mouse on a seemingly ominous trek to the peak of Villain Mountain. But what do you do when faced with some of the most fearsome Disney Animation villains? You sing a silly song of course!
The upper decks will include an expansive district themed to Mickey and friends where you will find seven pools staggered among tiered decks, an abundance of lounge chairs, an imaginative take on fast-casual fare with a festive character twist and the AquaMouse feature slide. Little cruisers will delight in a water wonderland themed to Pixar’s “Toy Story,” including a splash zone, wading pool, family waterslide and smoothie bar.
Character Interactions
Aboard the Disney Destiny, you will encounter an array of Disney villains throughout the ship — including Maleficent, Dr. Facilier, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee and Oogie Boogie — and some of Disney’s most mischievous and misunderstood personalities – like Captain Jack Sparrow, Bruno and Loki. You’ll have the chance to interact with these villains, rogues and mischief-makers during all-new events and activities, as well as some favorite Disney Cruise Line programs, from a frighteningly fun dance party in Oogie Boogie’s shipboard lair to interactive Disney trivia that gets interrupted by a cast of Disney villains.
Stern Decor
For the first time in Disney Cruise Line history, a Marvel Super Hero will be the signature stern character on the Disney Destiny. This signature larger-than-life sculpture will showcase Spider-Man and his Spider-Bots, who are making an attempt at decorating the filigree on the back of the ship with spiderwebs.
The Grand Hall
The Grand Hall of the Disney Destiny (aka the lobby atrium) will be its central gathering space, welcoming you to a world of dualities: heroes and villains, adventure and relaxation. Inspired by the rich lore and vibrant palette of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther films, the Grand Hall will be Disney Cruise Line’s kingdom on the seas. Grand Hall will feature a statue of T’Challa, the Black Panther: King of Wakanda, devoted son and beloved brother sworn to protect his kingdom — and the Disney Destiny.
Concierge Spaces
In true Iron Man style, the Destiny Tower Suite will take the heroes and villains motif to new heights — literally. This Marvel-inspired penthouse will honor Iron Man with a luxurious take on the sleek, industrial designs of Tony Stark. Set high in the ship’s forward funnel, this one-of-a-kind suite will offer views of the top deck and beyond through an expansive two-story window and nearly 2,000 square feet of living space.
The Destiny Tower Suite, as well as all concierge-level accommodations, will receive a premium level of service and access to exclusive areas and amenities, including the Concierge Lounge and private sun deck. On the Disney Destiny, the lounge will be outfitted with art that celebrates the Avengers and will be inspired by the sophisticated styling of their Manhattan headquarters. This hero-worthy retreat will be the perfect place to relax, sip a cocktail, and enjoy complimentary food and beverages throughout the day.
Youth Spaces
At the Destiny’s Oceaneer Club, kids ages 3 to 10 will become the heroes of their own epic Disney adventures at Marvel Super Hero Academy, a high-tech Avengers headquarters where young “recruits” are trained to be the next generation of Super Heroes alongside some of their favorite Avengers. Other Oceaneer Club spaces will be themed to Disney princesses, Star Wars heroes, Disney Imagineers, and Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
It’s a Small World Nursery will offer babysitting services for little cruisers aged 6 months to 3 years in a whimsical environment inspired by the beloved Disney attraction. At Edge, tweens ages 11 to 13 will have fun, make friends and play games in a bright, colorful hangout inspired by a New York City loft. For guests ages 14 to 17, Vibe will be a trendy loft where teens can meet new friends, watch movies, play games and participate in group activities created just for them.
Stage Shows, Theaters, and Other Entertainment
On the Disney Destiny, the entertainment options will include:
- Catch dazzling Broadway-style productions of “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” in the Walt Disney Theatre. The former is a whimsical retelling of the iconic Disney Animation film, while the latter is an original Disney Cruise Line show featuring Captain Minnie Mouse, Goofy and a host of beloved Disney and Pixar characters.
- Dance the night away at Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party, a roguish nighttime spectacular featuring a live rock band and Disney Cruise Line’s famous fireworks at sea.
- Get in the middle of the action at Hero Zone, a futuristic sports arena where your family can compete in “The Incredibles”-themed obstacle courses and free-play sports.
- Use your mobile device tojoin favorite Disney and Pixar heroes on virtual quests throughout the ship Disney Uncharted Adventure will be an interactive experience that uses your mobile device to.
- Watch first-run films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and more at the Wonderland and Never Land Cinemas.
Spa and Salon
As on the Wish, Senses Spa will provide a tranquil oasis offering indulgent spa and beauty treatments in private treatment rooms, lavish spa villas, and steam and aromatherapy rooms, while Senses Fitness will offer a state-of-the-art exercise and wellness facility.
Untangled Salon will be a chic venue for high-end hairstyling and beauty services, and Hook’s Barbery will be a unique twist on a traditional men’s salon with a “hidden” bar.
