How Did The Disney World Crowd Calendar Do Last Week?

Crowds at Walt Disney World held steady last week with each day hitting a crowd level well above average (for the year). The Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted ‘8’s and ‘9’s last week and that is pretty much what we observed except for Saturday which only reached a ‘7’. Monday also hit a level ‘7’ but that was solely due to Animal Kingdom pulling down the resort-wide figure. We think the 11:00 am rain storm that hit the resort kept guests from going to that park. With its shorter park hours and fewer attractions, a day in the rain at Animal Kingdom is likely much less desirable than the other three parks.

Let’s look at how the crowd levels stacked up each day last week:

Sunday’s crowds stayed within acceptable range of what the Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted at all four parks. Only Hollywood Studios missed the mark and only by one index level. There we saw average wait times like 47 minutes at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (predicted 48) and 84 minutes at Toy Story Midway Mania (predicted 82). Tower of Terror brought the park-wide crowd to a level ‘6’ with a 38-minute average wait.

Monday’s predictions missed only at Animal Kingdom although there it missed by a lot. Rain hit the parks around 11:00 am and we think that had a lot to do with why so many people seemed to avoid Animal Kingdom. The other three parks were very crowded as predicted.

Tuesday’s crowd at Magic Kingdom hit a level ’10’ on our scale, one step higher than the Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted. Space Mountain averaged a posted wait time of 111 minutes! Jungle Cruise averaged 56 and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin averaged 48 minutes, both representing a ’10’ out of ’10’. In fact, all the major Magic Kingdom attractions had average wait times reaching a ’10’ on Monday. Notice how Animal Kingdom crowds peaked on Tuesday, likely further proof that Monday’s crowds were washed out.

The crowd level was up at Magic Kingdom again on Wednesday. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad averaged 52 minutes, Peter Pan’s Flight, 73 and Space Mountain, 86. Average wait times weren’t as high as on Tuesday but still high enough to constitute a level ’10’ on our scale.

Epcot had the lowest crowd level on Thursday with average waits like 77 minutes at Soarin’ and 22 minutes at Spaceship Earth. Animal Kingdom waits weren’t so bad either, except for Kali River Rapids which averaged 77 minutes. DINOSAUR averaged 35 minutes and Expedition Everest averaged 44.

Friday brought some relief to the crowds at Magic Kingdom. After several days of extreme wait times we saw average waits like 34 minutes at The Haunted Mansion and 45 minutes at Jungle Cruise. Still high, but not as bad as we saw earlier in the week. Epcot had Extra Magic Hour Evening on Friday but wait times stayed reasonable (for summer) with averages like 12 minutes at Living with the Land and 25 minutes at Spaceship Earth.

Saturday brought the first (and only) surprise of the week. All four parks were lower than the calendar expected except for Animal Kingdom. Epcot was especially surprising with average waits like 54 minutes at Test Track and 64 at Soarin’. Sunday and Saturday had the lowest wait times of the week at Magic Kingdom.

What to Expect This Week
August 9 to 15, 2015

We may be seeing some signs that summer crowds are dissipating a little earlier than the Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted. We expected summer-like touring conditions for at least another week but it may be that summer vacations are coming to a close a little earlier or that fewer families than normal planned a late summer Disney trip. Either way, crowds will still be larger than average until we hit the end of August.

We were at Disney all of last week including the Magic Kingdom on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Tuesday was very crowded more so than Wednesday. You can have a great time at Disney even on a 10+ day but rope drop and a touring plan is the key. From 8:00 a.m. until lunch we did the following buzz x2, speedway, Winnie, mermaid, dumbo, barnstormer, 7 dwarfs, splash, big thunder, haunted mansion, Peter Pan, and PhilharMagic all with minimal waits. We then left for an afternoon break and came back for dinner. The crowds didn’t dissipate much in the evening.
