New Unofficial Guide Podcast – Main Street USA with Urban Designer Sam Gennawey
Monday Morning Update: Thanks for making the Unofficial Guide Disney Dish the #1 travel podcast on iTunes!
Another episode of the Unofficial Guide Disney Dish podcast is available. On this show we walk the Magic Kingdom’s Main Street USA with urban designer and author Sam Gennawey. Sam’s new book is Walt and the Promise of Progress City, which describes Walt Disney’s interest in urban planning, design and architecture. Sam’s knowledge of architecture and design is evident as we walk through Main Street. Learn why the entrance tunnels are on the left and right side of the train station, not in the middle. Hear why the pavement is red. Stand in the central hub and know where to look for ‘wienies’ and movement in every direction. And find out how Disney’s architects use fences and walkways to mark the borders of each land.
Here’s the link in iTunes. Your feedback and ratings on iTunes are appreciated. Here’s the direct link.
Side note: Jim and I are working our schedules out for more episodes, too, including Disneyland and the Disney Cruise Line. Look for an announcement (and possibly a couple of shows) in the next few weeks. In the meantime, enjoy these shows with Sam.

This is fantastic timing as we are headed back to the “World” two weeks from today! We really enjoy your podcasts!
Len – Thanks so much for the great series of podcasts.
I really enjoy it. Look forward to future podcasts with Jim Hill to update us on the latest scoops on where you left off from last year on the 4 parks. Have you thought of doing a series on the water parks, like you did with the 4 Main Park with Mr Hill?
Thanks Mike! Interesting idea about the water parks. I’ll run it by Jim. We’re going to talk this week. You’re not expecting us in bathing suits, right? Because the restraining order for that doesn’t lift for another couple of months. 😛
Good thing its a podcast with audio only… So break out the speedos… LOL! I am sure that would insight some interesting background comments….
haven’t had a chance to listen to this yet, but am hugely excited. After the Summer I’m doing my dissertation on Walt Disney World as a visual work – it’s creation and it’s influence. This is perfect for research – thank you thank you!
Thanks Kitty, and good luck with your research! If it helps, our Flikr account has something like 25,000 photos of WDW.
Where can i find direct links to the other podcast episodes? i find it easier to download it that way for my droid.

If it helps, I use Google Listen on my Android device and point it to the following XML feed for this podcast series:
I’ve had some aggravations with Google Listen, but it’s still better than finding and downloading every single episode of podcasts to which I want to listen.
These are some of the most enjoyable podcast episodes around. I honestly feel like I’m walking along with these guys. Pure FUN!
I’m really loving the Unofficial Guide podcasts, and this one covered one of my favorite parts of the Magic Kingdom. Thanks! One question, you mentioned some ‘mouse vs man’ or ‘mouse on man’ – something like that. What show is that? I’d love to listen to anything you guys enjoy.
It’s “Of Mouse and Man” by our own statistician Brian. Here’s the iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/of-mouse-and-man/id503894344.
Thanks for the callout of another podcast. With a 90 minute commute (each way) I’m always looking for more material.
Really looking forward to this! I notice you said “shows,” plural, with Sam. Does that mean we can expect more like this?
Yes – we recorded shows for every land. Wait until Adventureland, where Sam points out that the grey bricks running down the middle of the walkway outside Pirates represent the sewage from the fort.
I love this podcast so much! Please never stop making these; they’re like a free virtual walking tour of the parks!
Just listened to this for a second time. Still stunned at the concept of Swiss Family Treehouse as a weenie with motion.
Can’t say enough good things about this whole series.
Must point out though from the Animal Kingdom episode with Mr. Hill, that you both promised to revisit it in 6 months, and that was last September…
These are great!
THanks for making them.
