Step-By-Step Guide: How to Use Genie+ and Lightning Lane at Disney World

If you’re heading to Disney World, you might have heard about Genie — and it might sound pretty complicated. Never fear, TouringPlans is here! We’ll walk you through Genie and its upcharge features including Genie+. Whether it’s your first visit or you were an old hand at Fastpass+, you’ll be ready to use it in the parks. Last updated/republished January 9, 2024.

Today we’ll be talking about Genie+ at Disney World, but if you’re a Disneyland visitor click here for the equivalent post. Click on anything in the list below to go directly to that section, and click on any image in this walkthrough to enlarge it.

If you’re not interested in purchasing Genie+ or Lightning Lanes and you just want to know how to setup Genie and the Tip Board for convenient touring, click here.

Brief Overview of Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane, etc.

So that we’re all on the same page, I’m going to lay out the Genie terminology.

The My Disney Experience App (MDE) is a smartphone app that helps you manage your vacation and touring. It gives you information about your trip and real-time park data such as wait-times and show schedules.

The Lightning Lane is a special queue that allows you to skip [most of] the wait in line. To use the Lightning Lane, you need a reservation for a specific time. Lightning Lanes are not available at all attractions.

Disney Genie is a feature of My Disney Experience. The Genie page in the app has two tabs, the Tip Board and the My Day tab. On the Tip Board, you can see attraction and dining information to help you make decisions as you tour. On the My Day tab you can see plans you’ve already made, and also Genie’s (free) suggestions for activities you might enjoy.

Genie+ is an upcharge feature of Genie that allows you to make Lightning Lane (LL) reservations for multiple attractions. Genie+ can be purchased in two modes: “All Parks” that allows you to make reservations in any park, or for a single park at a time.

Genie+ also includes access to Audio Tales, which is a series of podcast-style audio clips giving background and behind-the-scenes information while you tour, and some Snapchat-style photo lenses. (See Genie+ Audio Tales: What to Know.) And, Genie+ includes free downloads of all PhotoPass pictures and video taken on attractions.

An Individual Lightning Lane (ILL) is an upcharge feature of Genie that lets you make a Lightning Lane reservation for a single ride.

The two upcharge features, Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes, are independent. You can purchase one and not the other if you choose. In fact, they are so independent that if an attraction has a Lightning Lane queue, then its reservations will be offered only through Genie+ or only with an Individual Lightning Lane — never both.

If you’re not interested in buying Lightning Lane access with the Genie+ and ILL upcharge features, then I recommend you skip the rest of this article and read Customize the Genie Tip Board for Convenience and Speed instead. That post focuses on getting the best experience with the free features of Disney Genie.

A note on language …

Talking about Lightning Lanes can be confusing because the term “Lightning Lane” actually refers to the queue, not the reservation. But since “reservation” is 4 syllables, many people (including myself!) tend to naturally abbreviate and use “Lightning Lane” to mean either the reservation or the queue. To make it worse, the term “Individual Lightning Lane” actually does mean the reservation – because when you get to the ride, the queue is still called the Lightning Lane. To keep it clear, I’ll refer to reservations as either Individual Lightning Lanes (ILLs) or Genie+ Lightning Lanes (Genie+ LLs) in this article.

How to Set Up Genie

The basic Disney Genie is free, and has two tabs available. The first is the Tip Board, where you can view attraction wait times and Lightning Lane availability. The second is the My Day tab, where you can view any reservations you have made as well as Genie’s recommendations for your personalized itinerary.

If you are not using Lightning Lanes, and you remember when your lunch reservation is (or you don’t have one), then you don’t need to use Disney Genie unless you want to. You can view wait times and all the other available information elsewhere in MDE. If you want to use Genie+ or buy Individual Lightning Lane reservations, you must do it through Genie. If you want to skip the setup below, you can still access the Tip Board and Lightning Lane reservation features – but you’ll miss out on some convenience.

You can begin setting up Genie from either of two places: the MDE Home Screen, or through the Hamburger Menu.

Notice the park reservations at the top in the third panel – if you don’t have a Park Pass reservation and your ticket needs one, you won’t be able to proceed at the next step

In the next few screens you’ll select your park and the date, and indicate who you’ll be touring with. If your ticket requires reservations, then you’ll only be able to select the park that your reservation is at.

The order of the screens after the steps above can vary a bit, and you may or may not be offered the opportunity to purchase Genie+ as part of the sequence. Don’t worry, if you click it away here you’ll have another chance later.

Most of these screens are self-explanatory (and you can go back and change your choices later), but one that isn’t so obvious is the Top Picks screen. Choices you make in your Top Picks will appear at the top of your Tip Board, so you can save a lot of scrolling by selecting your planned Lightning Lane picks here.

screens showing selection of top picks and completed Disney genie setup
If it’s after 7 a.m., you’ll see Genie’s recommendations for your day on the final screen.

You can set up Genie for days in the future if you choose, but Genie will always wait to give you recommendations until 7 a.m. on the day of your visit.  At this point we do not recommend using the personalized suggestions feature as a touring plan, as we find Genie’s suggestions are rarely an effective way to enjoy the parks. For more details on the “Some Additional Screens” and how to use the Tip Board while touring, see Customize the Genie Tip Board for Convenience and Speed.

How to purchase Genie+

You can buy Genie+ beginning at 12:01 a.m. of the day that you plan to use it. This is also when you’ll be able to view that day’s price, which is not announced in advance. The lowest price is $15, and the highest that we’ve seen so far is $39. During purchasing, you’ll have the option to buy Genie+ either for a specific park, or for all parks.

You may see a splash screen to buy Genie+ when entering Genie for the first time that day, or you will see the option to purchase on the My Day tab if you have a park reservation. You’ll also find a banner right at the top of the Tip Board, and if it’s after 7 a.m., you’ll be prompted to buy Genie+ if you click on a Lightning Lane time. You’re not likely to struggle with finding an entry point to start buying Genie+, because Disney will be thrilled to take your money.

Genie+ will automatically select everyone in your party, but you don’t need to buy it for everyone in your group. You can select Edit in the 2nd screen below to remove anyone who won’t be making Genie+ reservations. After the confirmation screen shown on the right below, clicking Continue will bring you back to either My Day or the Tip Board, depending on where you began your purchase.

screens showing how to purchase Disney Genie+
The price displayed in the Detail Review screen (2nd above) does not include tax. You’ll see the full payment price including tax in the Order Summary (3rd above).

How to make a Genie+ Lightning Lane (LL) reservation

To make a Genie+ reservation, start on the Tip Board and select the experience that you want to book. In the “Review Details” screen, make sure to note the time of the reservation. It is very common for this to be a different time than you saw on the Tip Board, even if you refreshed the Tip Board right before clicking. You don’t have to accept the changed time if it doesn’t work for you (click the x on the top left to back out), but you can’t adjust the time that you see. As usual, you can choose to make the reservation for all or only some members of your group.

If you’re booking between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., you won’t see a time as you do on the screenshots below. You’ll be able to book, but the button will say “Check Availability”. It still makes a difference when you book, earlier bookings tend to get earlier returns. It’s just that so many people are booking in the first half hour that the times you see before clicking wouldn’t be close to accurate, so Disney doesn’t show them.

screens showing how to make a Lightning Lane reservation with Genie+
Note the changed time in the second panel.
Reservations for Park Hopping

If you’re using a regular date-based ticket, you can make reservations for any park from the get-go. If you’re using a ticket that requires a park reservation, you may not be able to make a reservation for a park you’re hopping to if the return time is before 2 pm. This is rarely an issue, but it has occurred, usually to Annual Passholders. In these cases, you should find that you can make reservations for any park at any time of day as soon as you tap into the park where you have your reservation.

Making Your Next Reservation

You will not be able to make reservations in multiple parks unless you selected the “All Parks” option when you purchased Genie+.

After you make one reservation, you can make another one either

  • When you’ve used the one you just made (or canceled it)
  • When it has expired
  • After two hours have passed – and for the purposes of this calculation, reservations made before park opening behave as if they were made right at park opening. So if you make a reservation at 7 a.m. and the park opens at 9, you’ll need to wait until 11 a.m.

For planning purposes it’s nice to understand how the rules work, but the good news is that you don’t usually have to remember what the time will be since you can see it in the app. For a practical example that covers some funky situations in depth, see When Can I Book My Next Genie+ Lightning Lane?

screen showing placement of the "When you can book" banner in Disney Genie
Scroll to the top of the Tip Board to see when you’re eligible to book again.

How to modify a Genie+ Lightning Lane (LL) reservation

Genie+ reservations can be modified once you’ve made them: you can change the time of the reservation, or change it to a different attraction, or both. If you’re changing the attraction, you’re limited to options in the same park – to switch to an attraction in a different park you’ll need to cancel and rebook.

To begin modifying your reservation, begin on the My Day tab and find the card for the Lightning Lane you want to modify. Tap the meatball menu (the three dots) on the top right of the card. Select “Modify Plan” from the menu that opens at the bottom of the screen.

On the following screen, you’ll see the options that are available for you to change to. The option to select a new time for your current attraction will always be on the top. Below this will be options for other attractions and their available times. Remember that you’ll only see attractions on this list that are in the same park as your original reservation.

panel showing the 1st three screens of the workflow to modify a Lightning Lane

Once you’ve made your choice, the next set of screens should look pretty familiar by now; they’re very similar to the ones you see when making the reservation from scratch. As usual, the time on this Review pane might be different than what was showing when you made your selection – if you’re not happy with what you see, use the X in the top left corner to back out and retain your original reservation.

If you’d like to continue then edit your party, if necessary, and click Confirm Change. Editing your party here is a little different than when you’re first making the reservation. You can remove guests from the modification, which leaves their original reservation untouched, but you won’t be able to add anyone new into your party.

panel showing the final screens of the workflow to modify a Lightning Lane

Modifying a reservation does not restart the timer on when you can book again – if you made the original reservation at 11 a.m., you’ll still be eligible to book again at 1 p.m. at the latest once you modified it. For more detail about how modification affects when you can book again, see the examples in When Can I Book My Next Genie+ Lightning Lane?

How to make an Individual Lightning Lane (ILL) reservation

To make an Individual Lightning Lane reservation, start on the Tip Board and select the experience you would like to book. For an ILL reservation, you can select the time, so browse to find a time that’s convenient for you. As usual, you can select to include all or only some of your group.

On the Review Details page, make sure to check the time of the reservation — the same as you see with Genie+ reservations, it’s not uncommon to have it change from what you selected. If the time is wildly inappropriate for you, you can go back and search for a different time and try again.  After clicking purchase you’ll see a confirmation screen, and clicking through will bring you back to Genie. Although the time can change between when you first select and the Review Details screen, once you click Continue and move on to the payment screen your time will be reserved for 10 minutes while you complete payment.

screens showing how to book an Individual Lightning Lane in My Disney Experience
Note the changed time in the 2nd panel

Similar to regular Lightning Lane where return times don’t display on the Tip Board between 7 and 7:30 a.m., ILL panels will show “See Available Times”. Again, this is simply Disney’s way of acknowledging that due to the number of people booking during this time, it’s not possible to give accurate times on the Tip Board.

Once you’ve made an ILL reservation, there is currently no way to cancel or modify it. If you are unable to ride because the attraction is down at some point during your return window, then you will be eligible for a refund but it might not be automatic.

  • Hello. It’s been a while since we last went to Disney and we are going in July 🙂
Last time we went we had magic bands that held all of our dinner/fast pass reservations on. Do you know if the key to world card links to the new Genie+ ride reservation system?

    Reply
    • Hi Tanya, Yes it does. The KTTW card is the thing that functions most exactly like a MagicBand (except for not going on your wrist.)

You can also check out MagicMobile, which many people find convenient – we’ll have a walkthrough article on that coming in a couple of weeks. There are only a couple of places where you can use a MagicBand but not MagicMobile, so it makes a great backup in case someone forgets a card in the room.

  • Hi – Family is going to Hollywood Studios in mid-February, the week of Presidents Day, so we expect it will be very busy. We are staying onsite so we’ll take advantage of early entry to the park. We really want to go on Ride of the Resistance. Knowing we will have early entry, do you think we should still get individual Lightning Lane passes for Ride of the Resistance or will the line be short enough if we don’t, and just bee-line it to that ride as soon as we get into the park?

    Reply
    • Hi Tom, it always makes me kind of nervous giving other people advice, because everyone’s tolerance for lines and uncertainty is different. However, I can tell you what I would do *if* it was me. That might or might not be the right advice for you.

If you’re willing to spend the money and you only have 1 day in HS, I would just buy the ILL. Rise of Resistance is much, much better than it was, but it still has a fair amount of downtime. My thought would be that if I planned on doing it at Early Entry and it was down, I might be stuck with remaining ILL times that were unpalatable (or non-existent), and I’d rather just be sure. If it turned out that riding at Early Entry would have worked, I still wouldn’t feel it was a waste of money to have the guarantee, because there are plenty of valuable things to spend Early Entry time on at Hollywood Studios. But, I am pretty risk averse.

If I had two days in HS, or was starting there one day and hopping there on a second day, then I would consider trying to do it during Early Entry on my HS day with a backup plan of using ILL if something went wrong. But again, there are plenty of valuable things to spend Early Entry time on at HS, so even in this circumstance I wouldn’t fault anyone for deciding to pay for the ILL and spend their EE half hour on other things that will have longer waits later. This is especially true because Rise of the Resistance is almost 20 minutes to ride, and thus eats up a lot of Early Entry time if you choose to head there first.

One thing to be aware of is that during very crowded times, HS often opens for Early Entry even earlier than the posted time, so showing up a bit early even for EE might score you a win.

  • Thanks for a comprehensive look at Genie, Genie+, and ILL.

When using ILL in March 2022, I felt frustrated that the initial time I had selected would not hold until the ILL was completed. For example, we would get on at 7AM see a ride available at 9AM, we select that but when finished booking I would have a 1PM or later reservation. That stinks. They need to give you a couple of minutes to complete the reservation at the time initially selected.

Has this improved since March 2022? We will be at WDW in Feb 2023. Unsure if I wanted ILL.

    Reply
    • Hi Steve – there have been some changes, but I’m not sure whether they will address your frustration.

There are two places that you see the time: first on the card when you click to reserve, and second on the Review screen.

The time that you see on the Review screen is held for 10 minutes to give users time to complete the reservation or purchase. But I suspect Disney was hearing frustration from a lot of users like you about differences between the time on the card and the time on the Review screen. In August, they stopped showing times on the card between 7 and 7:30 a.m. – you can still make a reservation, it’s just more obvious that you won’t know what time you actually get until you tap. After 7:30, when the times do show, we find that the they still change – but it’s more like a reasonable 5-15 minutes, not the wild swings that you were seeing.

So I’m not sure whether this will be more appealing to you – plenty of people still don’t like the idea of pushing the button blind, but at least it doesn’t leave you feeling like you were “lied to” about the time you initially selected.

  • Is it possible to purchase an individual lightning lane with a return time that overlaps the return time of a previously booked Genie Plus lighting lane return window?

    Reply
    • Hi Dora – yes it is. And you won’t get a warning about an overlapping Lightning Lane, although you may get one about an overlapping dining reservation.

      • Thank you so much!

  • Such a great information resource! THANK YOU for putting this in table format. I was desperately searching for a concise definition of each of these systems. One question – how do virtual queues fit in with the rest of these systems? My family and I are planning to stay in a WDW resort in October, so we will have the early park access…and I would really love to cut down on time spent waiting in lines. Trying to figure out all the options! Thanks! {And more tables and 1,2,3 steps / checklists when possible!}

    Reply
    • Hi Kimberly, that’s such a good question, I think I might write a whole article on it. But just so you’re not waiting on my schedule on that (:-) ) here’s the answer. Virtual queues are a whole separate system from Genie+ and Lightning Lane, but they do sort of touch fingers in just a couple of places.

1 – If you have secured a boarding group in a Virtual Queue, it will appear on your My Day tab in Genie.
2 – The first “drop” for a Virtual Queue (when you can try to book) is usually at 7 a.m., the same time that you can start booking LL (and ILL if you are staying on site). Fun times, huh? The usual recommendation if you feel like there will be a conflict there is to give each family member a task – one on the VQ, one on LL, etc. But most of the time this is not such a big deal because for most LL/ILL rides you don’t need to book ride at 7 a.m. to get a good time.
3 – If a ride offers both Virtual Queue and ILL, you can do both to ride twice.

With any luck Guardians will be using a regular standby queue by the time you visit (famous last words, probably), but if not, good luck and have a great trip!

  • Does Genie+ ever sell out for that day? Will I always be able to buy it at 6.50am rather than having to wait up til midnight the night before? Thanks

    Reply
    • Hi Louise, when Disney originally announced the service, they said that it would not sell out. Earlier this year, they changed some things and as of June 8, 2022, it *is* possible for it to sell out. But that means we only have 3 months of experience to look at, and they were on the slower side – we haven’t seen it happen yet, but that might just mean that we’ve haven’t seen crowds high enough to trigger it yet.

If you’re going at a time with very high crowds such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, I would wait up to buy it just to be on the safe side. But otherwise I think you should probably be fine. Here’s someone with almost the same question as you, and the answer that was given to them by PlanDisney.

  • If I go into the park in the morning, and book a genie plus for let’s say 5pm. But between 2-4pm let’s say I leave the part to go rest in the hotel, does that 5pm reservation still valid or is it cancelled?

    Reply
    • Hi Debbie, you can leave and come back, no problem. Your reservation will remain unless you cancel it yourself.

      Reply
      • ok thanks, even if it’s an off site, non disney hotel?

    • @Debbie yes, even if it’s off-site. The system allows you to make and hold reservations even if you aren’t in the parks. As an extreme example, you can make a 6 p.m. reservation for Slinky Dog Dash while you are in an airport in another state, and everything will be fine as long as your plane takes off and you get to the park in time.

  • Can you book 2 ILL at once, or are there time restrictions on booking like with Genie+?

    Reply
    • Hi Tanya, you can book two ILL one right after the other, there is no waiting period. The only time restrictions are that your booking window opens later if you are an offsite guest than if you are a Disney resort guest.

  • Once you make an ILL or an IL where does that show in the APP? My Day, or My tip board? Do you get any kind of notification when it’s time to redeem or do you just have to remember?

    Reply
    • Hi Lorraine, we experimented with this and found that you can’t expect to see notifications or alerts on your home screen or within the MDE app. However, we know that the behavior of the app can be inconsistent, and of course Disney can make changes at any time. If you want to make sure you get an alert of some kind I would suggest using your phone’s reminder feature rather than relying on Disney’s app.

As to where to look for your reservations, look in My Day. The tip board will show if you have a reservation booked, but the *time* shown is not the time of your reservation — it’s just the next available time. It’s very easy to get confused by this, so use My Day any time you’re trying to review plans.

  • Is it possible to have someone with an Android operating system do this same post? The information is so much easier to understand with the visuals. I just read another post that showed Android users’ screens are different (we don’t have the option to cancel a LL!). If not, please keep this in mind for future articles. Thank you so much for providing this information.

  • I am a habitual overplanner. So figuring out the optimal Genie+/ILL strategy has kept me pretty busy. We plan on visiting during spring break and staying off-site. I’ve plugged in our preferred rides and we can do it all without any LL. We can even do all we want to do without too many long lines. “Long” lines is a bit subjective anyway. There is a difference between the Haunted Mansion’s graveyard and Soarin’s waiting-in-a-long-hallway-with-no-cell-reception.

So, I think I am going to do a first (for me) and just not worry about it. We can’t plan to rope drop because (potentially) everyone on-site will always be there a half hour before us. We can’t plan to get ILL for the high demand rides because the on-site will have a 2-3 hour head start. I suspect that we won’t even be able to use G+ more than once or twice a day at these crowd levels. Why stress about something that won’t happen anyway? Just trust the Lines App.

    • Hey J, I like your style. I have been for a weekend trip where I used Genie+ some days and didn’t on others, and I can confirm that it is possible to have a great time both with and without. Don’t forget, even those who do use Genie+ are not using it on every single ride.

  • This is a great post. Thank you. However, I just returned from a trip and my Genie+ screens looked different. Are your screen shots from an Apple phone? I have a Samsung (Android). My screens were not as detailed and I could not figure out how to cancel a LL.

    • Hi Jean, yes, these screen shots are from an Apple phone. I’m sorry to hear you had trouble figuring out how to cancel; if you ever have issues like that on a future trip I’d suggest seeking out the Guest Experience team in the parks — look for the blue tents. They’re usually terrific at helping to get issues like that resolved.

Hope you had a great trip!

  • Would love to see a list of attractions for each park that should be prioritized for Genie+ and ILL. For example DHS, you better get one for Slinky Dog because it will run out quickly. If you were oblivious to this fact, you will be disappointed when you can’t get one later in the day. For MK, Jungle Cruise will run out fast since it’s a low-capacity ride. You get the point.

  • Are there any restrictions on the number of lightening lanes you can book at one time (either through genie + or ILL purchases)? I have a group of 11, and I think I saw someone post the most you can book at one time is 10. Is that correct? TIA!

    • Hi Mike,

This appears to be a good news – bad news – good news kind of situation.

Good news, I found an official Disney answer here: https://plandisney.disney.go.com/question/family-traveling-disney-next-week-planning-using-genie-473778/

Bad news, there is a limit. (Although the official answer did suggest just trying the whole group at once anyway).

Good news, it turns out the limit is 12, not 10 as you had heard, so you should be all set!

    • @Heather Teubert:

No, there’s shouldn’t be anything else you need to do to activate Genie+ on the day you want to use it.

I’m not sure why you didn’t see experiences until 7:30 a.m. on the morning that you looked, but you don’t need to have purchased Genie+ in order to be able to see the Lightning Lane information, you only need it if you want to book one. So everyone (including you) should see the same thing, whether they have Genie+ or not.

  • I feel really sorry for the people who don’t have a smart phone or are technically challenged. This must be putting those people off going to WDW – although they should note that, when we went in November/December last year, the parks were really busy and we managed to do all the rides we wanted to – except Ratatouille – without using Genie+ or individual lightening lanes. The queues for Ratatouille were only virtual when we were there – I actually got a place in the virtual queue but the time given wasn’t until late evening and we weren’t planning to stay that late so I deleted our place. Going again in February and I understand that there is a stand-by queue now so fingers crossed that we will be able to experience Ratatouille this time. I am going to try and use genie+ on one of the days we are there to see if it makes a difference.

    • Hey Ruth, I totally hear where you’re coming from on this one. When I was in the parks in December, it definitely seemed to me that there were more people consistently walking around looking at their phones (instead of hauling them out quickly in line or whatever), but I’m not sure whether it’s that there really were more, or that after so much time on our sofas I was noticing it much more.

I definitely agree that it’s possible to have a great time without Genie+ or Lightning Lane. I’ve always felt that the key to having a great vacation at Disney, more than anything else, is just to have reasonable expectations about what you’re going to do.
