Are you excited about Rivers of Light, the new nighttime spectacular headed to Disney’s Animal Kingdom? Details have been minimal so far, but today, Disney shared some more about this stirring new show, as well as some gorgeous new concept art.

The main concept of the nighttime show is that as you move from day to night, the animal rules change.

For those who don’t know, Rivers of Light is going to take place on the Discovery River in between Discovery Island and Expedition Everest. The main concept of the nighttime show is that as you move from day to night, the animal rules change. The show will feature a pair of mystic hosts have come to the river and are bringing with them the gift of light.

During the show, the hosts will journey from the shores to lantern vessels and will present dances of water and light to summon animal spirits. According to Imagineer Joe Rhode, the light, fire, and water are combined to bring this explosion of animal life and it will rise into the sky and join the stars.

The park’s icon, the Tree of Life will also play an integral part in the story as it will undergo an awakening as spirits bring moments of wonder by magical fireflies.  We’ll see amazing stories that will come from the animals of the tree. It appears that projection technology similar to what is used on Cinderella Castle for Celebrate the Magic will be utilized.

Make sure you check out this video featuring Joe as he explains this new spectacular’s story.

Rivers of Light is expected to debut in the spring of 2016.

  • I wonder how many people can fit in the viewing area? This could become a problem like Fantasmic.

And given that 19 June is still Spring …..

  • So Excited 😀 We’re going in April (Sundown 7:45 & 8:00pmEST). I don’t think Disney would stick their neck out and say “Spring” if they weren’t confident it’d be ready by the end of March? The recent casting calls helped my decision to plan accordingly.
Hoping they roll out the Night Safari, too. Thanx Rikki!

  • Hi, we are going to Disney World in July and I took a look at the May park hours. The closing time is 5pm. Do you think they will change the times or will the “Rivers of lights” take place that early. Any idea how long the parks will be open on days with a show and if the show will be daily?

    • Once Disney decides when they want to premiere the nighttime activities, we will see the closing time of the park extended to later.

  • This is pretty cool. Was wondering what they were building there when we visited earlier this month.

  • I will be there on Earth Day (April 22nd)…any rumor if this will be open then?

    • No substantial rumors floating around just yet. I’ve heard March, but that’s been preliminary.
