Disney has been playing with the idea of an updated MagicBand for a while. Matter of fact, back in August, I discussed in In Case You Missed It that a new patent had been revealed surrounding this new version. Today, the Walt Disney World Resort has introduced the MagicBand 2 during their Destination D event.

This new MagicBand 2 will work the same way that the current MagicBands do, they will just be a bit more versatile and customizable than the version that is out now. This new MagicBand 2 is being introduced due to technological advances that have come about since the first MagicBand was introduced.

MagicBand 2 works exactly the same as the current MagicBand with more comfort and flexibility. According the patent images, Guests should be able to switch out the pucks in the center and place them in new MagicBands, if they choose. The new band itself is just a little wider in the center, due to the puck. (Which is where the Mickey icon is located. You know, the one you use at touch points throughout the park.)

These MagicBands will not only be available in standard versions, but Guests will also be able to purchase graphic MagicBand 2s, limited-edition and limited release versions, and more. Additionally, Guests will be able to purchase items like key chains to place their puck in instead; so you won’t have to rely on a MagicBand, if you don’t want to.

Current MagicBands will continue to work, so don’t worry if that’s what you have. The new MagicBand 2s will be begin to be released within the next few months. Stay tuned as we find out more.

  • This is great. Now I can spend time in the Emporium buying more custom Magic Bands while waiting for the Main Street Electrical Parade to come back.

  • I can’t wait to see if this change is made to offer new functionality. Surely there is a reason for the change beyond customization and new ways to wear it.
