National Academy of Sciences

Description And Comments

The National Academy of Sciences is located on Constitution Ave, near the intersection with 22nd St. Established in 1863 by Congress and President Lincoln, the Academy of Sciences provides unbiased opinions on scientific matters. The impressive building that houses their headquarters can be visited weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, when you will see the eclectic interior that immaculately integrates several architectural styles.

The interior is centered around a large, rectangular entry hall and breaks off into several smaller side rooms. You will see displays of major scientific discoveries, portraits and busts of famous scientists, and science-related art.

Touring Tips

The academy really doesn't look inviting; it's a massive facade with a door that's usually closed. Nevertheless, it can be visited as long as you have a valid ID--guests do need to sign in and out. The good news is that you will likely be one of very few inside.
