Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend
tbd – Disney's Hollywood Studios
The Tower of Terror 10 Miler will not be run in 2015, but is expected to be back for 2016. The below information is for the 2014 event and will be updated as soon as new items are available.
Coming off the wild success of other RunDisney events, this mid-distance contest was first run in 2012. It centers around Saturday, October 4, 2014 and the main event is the titular evening jog. As expected, a night race punctuated by appearances from Disney’s villains has been a huge triumph, ensuring the fearfully fun Tower of Terror 10 Miler weekend will be ever-growing.
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler
Disney invites you, if you dare, to step aboard because in this night race, you are the star. And this run travels directly to…the Twilight Zone.
If you read that line in your best Rod Serling impression you have already got the mood right for this 10 mile jog that begins at 10 pm…yes, pm. The memorable night race leads runners from Disney’s Hollywood Studios to ESPN Wide World of Sports and back to the Studios, where the finish line looms under the imposing Twilight Zone Tower of Terror building.
Along the way you will encounter many characters, just as in all RunDisney races. The difference with this spooktacular is that many of the characters will be Disney villains. You need to be true of heart to navigate this course of fright…or just join the dark side, that’s fun too.
As mentioned, the next Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler takes place on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 10 pm. Registration opened in February and the race sold out quickly, as all RunDisney races tend to do.
The cost for the 2014 running of the ghouls is $145 if you registered prior to March 25, 2014, $160 between March 26 and May 27, 2014, and $175 after that. This price gets you a spot in the race, a Champion tech shirt, finisher medal, and entry into the Disney Villains Hollywood Bash Party (see below).
Disney Happy Haunted 5k Trail Run
If you feel like the 10 Miler is a little too long or a little to terrifying, you may want to look into the only mildly chilling Happy Haunted 5k. This race takes place at the much more illuminated time of 7:30 am at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, also on Saturday, October 4, 2014.
This trail run takes racers of any age over pavement, grass, sand, and dirt with Disney characters and other entertainment along the way. Registration for the 5k cost $55 per runner if registered by July 29, 2014 and $65 thereafter. That entry fee, in addition to the race position, nets you a t-shirt and a finisher medallion.
RunDisney Kids Races
As usual, Disney did not forget about the children. At 9:30 am on Saturday, October 4, 2014 are the Kids Races, short events made special just for the little ones (okay, and their parents). There is a 100m dash for the 1-3 year olds, a 200m for 4-6 year olds, a 400m for those ages 7 and 8, a 1 mile race for anyone 13 and under, and even a Diaper Dash for the very little ones.
All participants receive a t-shirt and finisher medallion in exchange for the registration fee. For the Diaper Dash, 100m, 200m, and 400m the fee is $15, if registered by July 29, 2014, or $20 after July 29. The one miler costs $30 on or before July 29 and $35 after. As with all races on this weekend, registration opens February 11, 2014.
Disney Villains Hollywood Bash
Following the running of the Tower of Terror 10 Miler comes this late night festival of fright. From 10 pm to 3 am Disney’s Hollywood Studios is open to runners, their guests, and a few of Disney’s most villainous characters.
In addition to the villains, there is live music as well as the opportunity to ride several of Hollywood Studios’ attractions with little to no waits. Entry to the Bash is included with the registration fee for the 10 Miler, but friends and family of runners can purchase entry for $55 if purchased by May 28, 2014, $65 between May 29 and September 3, and $75 after September 3, 1014.
Disney’s Health and Fitness Expo
The Fitness Expo is held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex and is where to go if you’re looking for Tower of Terror 10 Miler merchandise or new fitness gear. What is very important is that ALL RUNNERS MUST GO TO THE EXPO in order to pick up their race packets.
The Expo runs on Friday, October 3, 2014 from 11 am until 7 pm and on Saturday, October 4 from 9 am until 3 pm.
Buses to and from Disney’s Hollywood Studios or the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex are provided for all runners staying in any of the on-site Disney host resorts. For the 2014 event the host resorts are: All 3 All-Stars Resorts, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach, both Port Orleans Resorts, Beach Club, Polynesian, Wilderness Lodge, and Yacht Club.
As with many race weekends, the overall crowds at Walt Disney World are not substantially impacted. While there are extra visitors on property during the weekend, they do not increase the attraction wait times very much. You will notice an impact if you are staying in one of the host resorts or visiting Hollywood Studios on the day of the 10 Miler, otherwise the impact will be minimal.
