DC
Capitol Hill Hotels

Capitol Hill is a large area that more-or-less encompasses the space all around the non-Mall parts of the Capitol Building. Much of it is residential and there are a few well placed Metro stops, which makes it a great area if you are interested in renting an Airbnb (see some suggestions below). If that's not your thing, there are also a few very good hotel options, some at better prices than you would expect.

The main Metro stops for Capitol Hill are Union Station (Red) on the north side of the Capitol Building and Federal Center, Capitol South, and Eastern Market (all Blue, Orange, Silver) on the south side. There are large swaths of Capitol Hill, however, that are not within reasonable walking distance from a Metro.

Capitol Hill Hotel

A family-friendly (and pet friendly) hotel in an ideal location: one block from the Capitol South Metro and Library of Congress; 3 blocks from the Capitol Building itself. All rooms have kitchenettes and roomy closets, making this a good option for longer trips or if you like to make the occasional meal yourself. If not, there are lots of dining options within a few blocks.

Hotel George

Located less than a block from Union Station, this elegant Kimpton hotel is a wonderful option in a busy area. The rooms and common areas are elegant and covered with American history-related art. The French restaurant here, Bistro Bis, rates 3 1/2 stars on our scale as well...not too shabby.

Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill

A modern business-oriented hotel that is nevertheless good for families as well. It is rather plainly appointed, but the amenities--including a pool and fitness center--make up for it. Located two blocks from Union Station.

Airbnb Properties

While we haven't stayed in all of them (yet), here are some of our favorite listings in the Capitol Hill area. All are within an easy walk (<4 blocks) of a Metro station and all have parking included. We also generally only recommend listing where you get the entire apartment or house and that have air conditioning--unless you travel in the dead of winter, you might need it.

Please note that our description may not exactly match theirs. The hosts change them quite a lot.

1 Bedroom Apartment Within Steps of the Supreme Court

The location couldn't be any better. At around $250/night (not including taxes and fees) it's a little pricey for a one bedroom, but it is literally within sight of the Capitol, clean, and includes parking.

1 Bedroom Apartment with Pull-out Sofa in Charming Area

This apartment is in a row of houses that couldn't be more charming, and it being less than 1 block from the Eastern Market and its Metro station helps even more. The owners go above and beyond, even throwing in a Metro card "with a few bucks on it" and offering complimentary rides up to 29 minutes on the Capital Bikeshare. They are also officially an allergy-friendly host and can clean the apartment with allergy-sensitive chemicals.

The only downside is that, like most D.C. apartments, it's a one-bedroom. It does, however, have a fold-out sofa in the living room so 4 can sleep relatively comfortably. At about $200/night (not including taxes and fees) it's around what you would pay for a hotel room at the nearby Capitol Hill Hotel.

1 Bedroom Apartment Near Union Station

This is your fairly standard apartment in the basement of a townhouse. It has one bedroom and a fold-out couch, but it is one of our favorites in style. It is a really nice, modern, clean apartment that even has a whirlpool tub--a nice feature after a long day of walking. At $120/night (not including taxes and fees) and 2 blocks from Union Station it's a steal.
