101 Ways to Propose at Walt Disney World

You’re in love! You want it to last forever and ever! You’re going to propose! You want to make it special! What to do? Propose at Walt Disney World!

While there are no real statistics about how many people get engaged at Disney World each year, my personal guesstimate is “lots and lots.” (Hey, I said there were no firm statistics.) I’ve personally seen five WDW proposals (all as a bystander) and we’ve answered hundreds of “How do I propose at Disney World?” questions on the Walt Disney World Moms Panel. In conversations with cast at the Grand Floridian’s posh Victoria & Albert’s restaurant, I’ve learned that they typically host several proposals each week, at that location alone.

Obviously many people have found great joy through their Disney betrothments, but before you start hatching your plan there are few things you may want to consider:

  • Does your intended truly love Disney (as much as she loves you)? You don’t want to inadvertently link your eternal happiness to something she finds unpleasant, or even just meh.
  • Will you or your intended mind having an audience for your proposal? Walt Disney World is a busy place, even relatively secluded spots may have other people nearby.
  • Are there costs involved with a Disney proposal that you would not encounter if you had proposed elsewhere? Would you be better off saving those pennies for the wedding, honeymoon, or other more practical purpose.

Assuming you’ve thought it through and decided that a Disney proposal is the perfect way to start your happily ever after, here are 101 ideas to help you brainstorm the perfect proposition. When deciding which route to take, be sure to take your beloved’s personality and interests into consideration. Some of these suggestions are sweet, some are silly, some are splashy (figuratively and literally), some are inexpensive, some are pricey, but any of them will be perfect if she answers, “YES!”

Please note that while I am using the HE proposes to HER convention in this article, I wholeheartedly endorse women proposing to men, men proposing to men, women proposing to women, and any other variations on the spectrum. Disney is also on board with couples of all configurations becoming engaged on property.

    1. Hire the Disney Fairytale Engagements department to plan a private event. This might include access to an otherwise inaccessible location or allow you to include extensive character participation in your plans.
    2. Have dinner at Disney’s finest restaurant, Victoria & Albert’s. Have the staff bring out the ring on a tray with dessert. Call 407-939-3862 to make reservations and arrange for surprise planning.
    3. Take a blanket and picnic basket to the beach at the Polynesian during the Wishes fireworks show. During the “…dreams come true” part. Ask her to make your dreams come true by becoming your bride.
    4. Book a tandem parasailing ride at the Contemporary resort. When you’re in the air, tell her that you’ll be floating on air if she says, “Yes.” Weight limits apply to tandem rides, works best if you’re both petite. DON’T bring a potentially droppable ring into the sky.
    5. Take a horsedrawn carriage ride at Fort Wilderness or Port Orleans, propose on the way. Be sure you don’t mind having the driver as your audience.
    6. Visit the Wishing Well in the rose garden near the Magic Kingdom castle forecourt. Tell her that your wish is that she’ll spend the rest of her life with you.
    7. Hire the independent service Gifts of Lifetime to help you arrange a private scavenger hunt.
Give her a ring in the pirates treasure room.
    1. Have a Cinderella Slipper sent to your room. Ask her to be your princess.
    2. Offer her a ring during the ring toss scene of Toy Story Midway Mania at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Hold on tight, those vehicles turn quickly.
    3. Take a stroll outside the Grand Floridian. At the sign for Wedding Pavilion, ask her to join you at a wedding … yours together
    4. During the Haunted Mansion ride at the Magic Kingdom, point out all the wedding portraits. Say, “That gives me an idea….” Works best with a potential bride who has a sense of humor.
    5. Pretend like you’re posing for a regular PhotoPass picture in front of the Castle. As the photographer is setting up the shot, get down on one knee and present the ring. Would be great to alert the photographer a few minutes in advance so he can keep shooting throughout the proposal.
    6. If you know that her dream honeymoon destination is one of the countries represented in Epcot’s World Showcase, propose there. For example, stand under the faux Eiffel Tower in France and say, “I’d love to take you to Paris … for our honeymoon.”
    7. Stand near the single rider line at any attraction that has one (Test Track, for example). Say “I don’t want to go in that line. I don’t ever want to be single again.”
    8. On the Small World ride at the Magic Kingdom, say “You’re my whole world, please be my bride.”
    9. At Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom, order the Cinderella Slipper chocolate dessert. Have the ring placed on the tray.
Cinderella Castle makes a lovely proposal backdrop.
    1. Arrange for a private Illuminations fireworks cruise, propose on board. Be sure you don’t mind having the driver as your audience.
    2. Watch the Wishes fireworks presentation from the 4th floor observation deck at the Contemporary resort. Tell her she “lights up your life” and pop the question.
    3. Get on the Magic Kingdom carousel. Tell her “life has its ups and downs, but whatever it brings, you want to share it with her.”

    7. Get the bride and groom Vinylmation figures. Go to the D-Street Store at Downtown Disney and pretend like you’re going to trade the figures. Then stop and tell your intended, “Wait, I can’t trade this because they remind me of us.” These figures are not currently available in stores, but are readily available on eBay.
    8. If you’re staying at a deluxe resort, cancel a dinner reservation and order a room service meal instead. When she asks why, tell her it’s because you want to be alone with her on your special night. Then propose.
    9. Stop by one of the park Guest Relations offices and get a free “Happily Ever After” button. Give it to her and say that you would love to live happily ever after with her.
    10. Go to the Hoop Dee Doo Revue dinner show. When the cast ask whether anyone is celebrating anything, raise your hand and say that you’d like to celebrate if your girlfriend agrees to become your bride. Then propose. This will have a big audience. Be sure she’ll say yes.

    14. Ask her to “take the plunge” with you on during the big drop on Splash Mountain. Again, best to keep that ring safely tucked away until after you’re on dry land.
    15. Bury a proxy ring in the sand at the Animal Kingdom’s Boneyard, have her find it while digging. For obvious reasons, you don’t want to bury the real ring. Works best if you have an accomplice bury it just ahead of your arrival and text you where to look.
Hide a ring in her box of popcorn.
    1. Visit the Flights of Wonder show at the Animal Kingdom. Tell her that your heart “will take wing” if she becomes your bride.
    2. Ask a caricature artist (several locations in the parks and resorts) to sketch the two of you together. Then ask him to draw a ring on your intended’s hand.

    5. At the Animal Kingdom’s Affection Section, proclaim your undying affection for her. Then propose.

There you go, 101 ways to get incorporate a marriage proposal into your Disney World vacation. I’m sure there are at least as many more ideas as there are couples embarking on their lives together.

So lovebirds, are most of these too Goofy for you? Would any of them actually work? Did you propose, or get proposed to, at Walt Disney World? How did it go? Let us know in the comments below.

#26 has to be my favorite, but all of these are so creative! You must’ve had so much fun thinking of all of these options!

My teenage daughters did have a great time helping me come up with ideas. Their future husbands are now under a lot of pressure to come up with something good. 🙂

My son and I witnessed #3 at the poly a few years ago. It wasn’t on the beach and almost didn’t happen since the groom almost lost the ring. Should have seen him searching the grass for the ring.

I so worry about those rings. All those potential grooms are so nervous. I wish they’d just propose with plastic ring and leave the real one in the safe in the room, but somehow that doesn’t seem as special.

I was proposed to at Magic Kingdom when it was our turn to take pictures with Mickey. I went to hug Mickey while my (now) fiance gave the photopass photographer our card. He told me later he asked them to please take lots and lots of pictures. Next thing I know he’s down on one knee. I’m so glad the photographer was there to capture our special moment.

Not quite #17, but we did get engaged at the end of Illuminations. We were under the Christmas tree, so we were behind most of the crowd, and the few people who could see us weren’t looking our way.

Under the Christmas tree! I love it!

I wrote this article now because I think of this time of year as proposal time. My dad proposed to my mom on Christmas Eve and my husband proposed to me on New Year’s Eve, so I link the happy feeling of the holidays with getting engaged.

Love the creativity here—it’s nice to see something besides the standard “down on one knee during Wishes” proposal.

One thing to note, though, is that there is no Disney Fairy Tale Engagements department. That link is just a web page with a lot of suggestions and a little bit of contact information specific to a few of them (like the phone number for a restaurant, the recreation department, or private dining).

I get a lot of questions from people looking for official help from Disney on a proposal, and they can never believe there’s no division of the company devoted to this. Unfortunately, only actual weddings/commitment ceremonies are lucrative enough to warrant one!

I saw a proposal last February in Italy by the fountain just before Illuminations started. They were so excited, I don’t even think they noticed the Disney fireworks. So sweet!

During our recent trip to Disney in May, my now fiance proposed during our Wild Africa Trek in the Animal Kingdom. It was during our break, overlooking the savannah, and the photgraphy caught the whole thing. The moment was overwhelming!
Disney is a magical place to begin, add in aproposal and there is nothing like it.

My friend did a version of #33. I kept his soon-to-be fiancee occupied while he talked to a cariacture artist in France. My roommate took their kids to explore the rest of the countries, while they were drawing. He had he artist draw him proposing, and they wrote “Will you marry me?” over his head, and an empty bubble over hers. Everyone going by kept commenting and I thought they were going to spill the beans lol!! They didn’t and they have a ton of pictures since I was snapping away. He got down on one knee just like the picture, and managed to fall out of the chair too-perfect!

Erin — I’d love to see one of your how-to articles featuring “how to celebrate your anniversary at WDW.” We’ll be there for our 15th. Our situation won’t allow for “alone time” away from the kids. But maybe we could do something fun and special with them in tow. Looks like the unofficial guide suggests that the Magic Kingdom will be the best park on that day.
    Love your articles! Thank you!

My husband arranged through Disney Special Events our magical night! He secretly arranged for us to have dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table at 9:45pm to watch the Wishes fireworks from inside of the castle. Little did I know at the time the Disney team arranged with my husband a customized menu with our favorite dishes, and desserts. When our dessert came to our table it arrived in a large domed silver platter, and when the waiter revealed it’s contents it was my ring on a bed of red rose petals inside of a custom engraved glass slipper asking me to marry him with our future wedding date on the bottom of the slipper! MOST AMAZING NIGHT EVER & it was all captured on film by a Disney photographer. We frequently visit the castle, and I always look up at “my window”…a memory and experience I will NEVER forget!

Just stop at the Guest Relations office at any of the parks. They’ll give them for free to anyone. They also have them at many, but not all, ticket booths and often behind the front desks at the resorts. They’re pretty easy to find.

I went last year, and got a “First Visit” pin. I did not know they had many other pins as well! Maybe if you guys have time in the future, another blog post could be about free stuff you can get at DW.

#6 Worked out well for me! I stood behind her while we both threw coins into the well and then asked if she wanted to know my wish. When she turned around, I proposed. This is good if you’re getting engaged to someone who doesn’t like too much of an audience. The well had almost no one around early in the morning.

I wrote my fiance a song so that she’d have a keepsake that would stand the test of time. The song was about our relationship and how we met, in the end of the song i asked her to marry me. You can hear the song here. http://snd.sc/157llIu

Hey! I am going to Disney this December and I am planning on asking my beautiful and wonderful girlfriend to marry me. She LOVES Disney and we are both kids at heart. She (and I) both love attention and I am wanting a big audience for when I ask her. I like the idea of the Monster Inc. Laugh floor and getting one of the monsters to ask. How can I secure that this can happen? Will they automatically do it as long as I tell them before we go in? Also, any ideas on how to tell the cast member without my g/f knowing? Thanks in advance for all of your help!

With this kind of thing, nothing is automatic. You’re always reliant on the kindness of whichever cast member you talk to, but hopefully they will be receptive to your idea and go that extra mile to make it happen for you. You might also try asking your hotel concierge or at Guest Services, who could be able to put you in touch with the right person to make this happen.

Thanks! From what I remember, you are not allowed to take pictures in the Laugh Floor. Do they allow exceptions for these kinds of moments? This may be a question to ask Guest Services, but just curious. Thanks again for your help!

I tried, the cast members were totally fine with it and wanted to help, but their manager wouldn’t allow it. As far as getting away from your g/f I told her to wait a minute over by Buzz Lightyear because I had to ask someone a question. When I came back (unsuccessfully) I then told her that reason I ducked off was there was a secret pin trading “cabal” (she knew I was looking for Toy Story LGM pins) and that I needed to talk with a cast member and use “passwords and handshakes” to get in.

I used a variation on #49, but I had tried to set up #98 @ Monsters Inc. the cast members were fine with it, but their manager wouldn’t allow it.
