NEW! Touring Plans With Free Time at End of Day

We’ve launched a new touring plan option that places the free time you have at the end of the day. This option addresses one of the most frequent requests from our users who prefer to have more of their evenings available for unscheduled activities.

The new feature is available on our website now, for plans at Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, and Universal Orlando. The new feature will be available on our Lines app in the next few weeks.

Using the New Free Time Option in Your Touring Plans

The new free time option is found in the Advanced Options section of your touring plan:

Before this option was available it was common for our touring plan software to put free time in the middle of the day. That makes sense if you’re trying to minimize your overall waits in line, since the middle of the day is typicaly the most crowded time of day in theme parks.

The new feature attempts to consolidate as much free time as possible in the last few steps of your plan, and then attempts to minimize the time spent waiting in line beforehand. This typically leads to slightly more waiting in line, but it’s something that a lot of guests prefer.

How End-of-Day Free Time Affects Waits in Line

Our tests of full-day plans in Walt Disney World indicates that moving free time to the end of the day increases the time spent waiting in line around 5% to 20%. Factors such as the number of attractions in the plan, the number of scheduled shows in the plan, and use of Lightning Lane or Express Pass, contribute to that range.

For comparison, here’s two of our most popular plans with the new End-of-Day Free Time feature turned off and on, to show how the new flag affects:

  • The total time spent waiting in lines
  • The total free time throughout the day
  • The time of day you complete your last attraction (excluding end-of-night shows like Fantasmic!)

Without End-of-Day Free time With End-of-Day Free time
Waiting in line (HH:MM) 5:40 6:32 (+0:52)
Free time (HH:MM) 1:57 0:15 (-1:42)
Last attraction done at 8:50 p.m. 7:50 p.m.

And for the Magic Kingdom:

Without End-of-Day Free time With End-of-Day Free time
Waiting in line (HH:MM) 3:59 5:13 (+1:14)
Free time (HH:MM) 3:54 2:37 (-1:17)
Last attraction done at 9:30 p.m. 7:20 p.m.

The Magic Kingdom results seem to encapsulate the trade-off pretty well. You accept two more hours of waiting in line to finish your last attraction a little more than two hours earlier. That’s appealing to a lot of people, especially those who aren’t staying to see the evening fireworks.
