runDisney Introduces Virtual Races
Lace up your tennis shoes! It’s time to go run!
Are you someone who has always wanted to do a runDisney 5K, but you were either not able to run one at Disneyland or Walt Disney World or the race sold out before you could sign up? Or are you just someone who’s addicted to the bling? Well, runDisney has introduced a way for you to have the ability to run not one, but three new and different 5K options, as well as participate in a unique challenge race with the runDisney Virtual Running Shorts Series.
The series launches in time for the summer and will include three different 5K choice to complete and the best part is that you can complete them anywhere! Do them in your neighborhood, on your treadmill, pretty much anywhere you desire and you will be able to earn a unique medal for each race that you complete.
The virtual races are inspired by Mickey Mouse and each of the finisher medals represent different pieces that are iconic to him. For the first 5K, you’ll earn a “Yellow Shoes” medal, for the second 5K, you’ll earn a “Red Pants” medal, and for the third 5K, you could earn the “White Glove” medal. Runners who complete the challenge, running all three races, will receive a special challenge finisher medal, as well.
For those who are signed up to run the Yellow Shoes 5K, you must complete your race between May 15 – June 1, 2016. Those who sign up for the Red Pants 5K must run their race from June 5 – June 18, 2016. Finally those who sign up for the White Glove 5K will need to run from June 19 – June 30, 2016. Each runner will receive a finisher medal and a digital race bib for each race.
For those who run all 3 races – the entire 9.3 miles, you will earn a special Running Shorts series medal that features Mickey sporting his complete ensemble, as well as a Mickey tumbler.
The price for each individual race is $39, or to run the series it will cost $142.
While you are not required to share proof of the run, you are encouraged to use the hashtag #runDisneyShorts.

Im in love with this idea, I do have a young kid, and now is impossible to be at Disney doing the real run at the parks….I try last year, but sold out before I finish my registration. Its a great idea…..keep us moving…..and we do have a medal….Price is reasonable, every race we do its 40-50 dollars and no medals…..Im happy do be part of #runDisneyShorts
There is now a RUMOR (emphasis mine) that the support for LLS is participants’ donations only, and no financial consideration from Disney. Can you guys confirm/deny this?
I think I’m in the minority here, but I’m actually happy about this. I’m someone who is just getting into trying to get healthy and do runDisney events. I was worried about keeping up with the pace if I did one of the actual events at Disney World. This is a nice way to kind of ease into the idea of the runDisney events. Yes, I know I am essentially paying for a medal, but it gives me motivation and makes me feel like I am apart of an event that I don’t think I could do on property yet.
I feel the same way! I really want to do a RunDisney race, but I’m not fast and I can’t afford to go to Disney that often, so I love the opportunity to participate in some way. I did a virtual race for myself in January and just bought myself a medal. I’d much rather do this.
Same here! I live in australua so it’s not cheap to get over an do run disney races. This is a great motivator for me to help train for when I do get over there to do the real thing 🙂
yep i agree with you too bec im all for it as its not cheap to fly over there as i did it last year and all up it cost about $300 for the 3 day event
Jennifer – I agree with you. I’m in the same boat…registered for the Wine & Dine 5K, but have never competed in one in my life. I’m doing it with my daughters and they are incredibly encouraging. I have registered all three of us for these races, also, because I want to get into practice for November. Yes, people can pay the money for just the medal, but personally, I couldn’t do that…I have too much pride.
This does not surprise me at all. People love Disney medals. There are quite a few other virtual races out there, and the prices and rules are pretty similar. I, too, object the seemingly endless money grabs, but in this case, I think they are just joining the marketplace.
I love my Disney medals, but part of the medal, for me, was the experience of actually running a race at the park. I think it is a cool idea, in some ways, and virtual races are indeed not a new thing. I just can’t justify paying money to not run an actual Disney course, even if I do get a medal for it.
I’m surprised they didn’t team up with Runkeeper, Endomondo or another GPS tracking app to actually get proof of race.

That’s because they don’t care about the running or the medals. Just the money.

Needs Google Cardboard or some other VR.
Download the app (VR) thing to your iphone and put in a google cardboard (about 9 dollars).
Have at it on a treadmill. Have it track progress, fitness etc for the reality run.

The only word that comes to mind is “bogus.”
Now you can pay Disney to run on your treadmill! Or, you can be a jerk and shell out $35 each for 4 medals and not run a single step!
I’m sorry, but unless EVERY SINGLE CENT from this thing goes to the LLS, then this is a tremendous joke, and the biggest, most preposterous cash grab in recent memory. And this includes massive AP price increases, tiered pricing, $300 Jungle Cruise breakfasts, and $69-149 extra magic hours! I truly want to see the financial breakdowns from this event.
