Universal Translator – Universal Monsters
With attractions located in multiple parks and featured in the seasonal Halloween Horror Nights event, the Universal Monsters are making a huge comeback in pop culture and at Universal theme parks. But what are the monsters? Aren’t they just some scary… well, monsters?!?
Horror is deeply woven through Universal Pictures, ever since Lon Chaney transformed into Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Cinemas were dominated for decades by classic Universal Horror films such as Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. Industry leaders in makeup, prosthetics, and costumes, with industry luminaries such as Mr. Chaney, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and more honed their skills working at Universal. Even now Universal’s horror legacy lives on with films like The Mummy, Dark Universe at the new Epic Universe theme park, and their seasonal Halloween Horror Nights events worldwide. What a legacy for a property that saved Universal twice – once in the 1930s with films during the great depression and once again in the 2000s with theme parks after the tourism crash.
