Super Nintendo World’s Video Game Inspirations

Today is Mario Day (March 10th, Mar 10, get it?), and what better time to celebrate the mustached plumber (and carpenter and doctor and racer and typing instructor) and his brand new lands in the Universal parks? This article covers all the video games that inspired the new Super Nintendo World; from the green hills of Mount Beanpole to the desserts of Dry Dry World, we have it all. Plus, stay to the end for some secret references in the land!

Mushroom Kingdom

The Mushroom Kingdom in Super Nintendo World is home to Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser. It’s featured in many Mario games, but Super Nintendo World’s version takes direct inspiration from the Super Mario 3D World game on the Wii U and Switch. The landscapes and scenes found around the land are taken directly from the game, like Mount Beanpole, which houses the Yoshi Adventure Attraction. The Key Challenge around the land is like playing in your own Mario game where you collect three keys to complete to defeat Bowser Jr. All the platforming action that defines the Super Mario games is found in this land.

Those with a keen eye might notice some familiar, small faces scattered around the lands. Pikmin can be found in the out-of-the-way locations, the small nooks, and random spots in the Mushroom Kingdom and Donkey Kong Country.

Mario Kart: Bowser Challenge

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch is one of the best-selling video games of all time, with this installment alone selling over 67 million copies. Folks love the cross of fast cart racing with the chaos of the battle items, and Mario Kart Bower’s Challenge in Super Nintendo World delivers. The ride is a family-friendly thrill where guests compete on Team Mario to defeat the Team Koopa opponents and win the Universal Cup. Riders steer into turns to collect coins and launch shells at the Koopas to win the cup. Unlike the game, the ride is a more directed experience focused on shooting competitors and objects over racing.

Donkey Kong: Minecart Madness

Inspired by the iconic Donkey Kong Country games, Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness brings the hair-raising mine cart levels from the game to life. This mine cart coaster seats four, and the mine carts launch, skip, jump, fall, and skim across water. Donkey Kong Country Returns’ main villain, Tiki Tong, is our main antagonist, as he looks to steal all the Kongs’ bananas. Throughout the land are other callbacks to the Kong games, like Rambi the Rhino at the bongo game, Cranky Kong in the queue, and a shout-out to Funky Kong.

Yoshi Adventure

Yoshi’s Adventure.

Yoshis are the cute, rideable dinosaurs of the Mushroom Kingdom. On the Yoshi Adventure ride, we get to ride on Yoshis on a rescue mission to find the three missing Yoshi eggs. Inspired by the adventure games Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker and Yoshi’s Island. I highly recommend these games for all audiences—they’re fun, leisurely games that focus on exploration and discovery.
