10 Reasons Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay May Become Your Favorite Ports

I’ve been asked before what’s so special about a private island destination stop when you’re on a cruise. These days, many cruise lines have one, and while some are better than others, all are enjoyable. Aside from incredible convenience due to their proximity to the ship, here are some of the reasons why.

1. They’re Beautiful – This is not hyperbole. Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay both have gorgeous sandy beaches and beautiful blue water. No worrying that you’ll find at least one great beach on your itinerary. If you’re stopping at Lookout or Castaway, you just have.

2. You Know What You’re Going to Get – These destinations are mainly staffed by the crew you’ve come to know and love onboard. The other guests are the same guests you’ve spent your cruise with. There are no other ships, no other cruise lines there. While technically locals are allowed at Lookout Cay, in reality, you won’t see many, if any at all. Disney has taken your cruise bubble and extended it to the islands.

3. No Research or Planning – Often, you’ll spend a lot of time before your cruise researching what to do in each port. Maybe it’s finding the best beach or the best snorkeling in clear waters. Maybe you don’t want to have to take a long transfer or pay for a taxi ride. Unless there’s an excursion you have your heart set on, no advance planning is necessary. Just get off and enjoy.

4. Beach Towels – Don’t worry about packing beach towels or carrying towels off the ship. Disney has them ready for you on the islands.

5. Beach Chairs – It’s fairly common for beach vendors to charge for chairs at local beaches. One major cruise line even charges for beach chairs on their private island. Not on Lookout and Castaway. Lounge chairs are included! As well as hammocks on Castaway!

6. Free Activities – Many activities on the island are also included. Things like character meet and greets are available on both islands. On Castaway, there’s a game pavilion with chess, Connect Four, foosball, and other games. There’s also a soccer field and a volleyball court to use. On Lookout, there’s a Junkanoo show, as well as a game pavilion with family games and activities.

7. Water Activities – Aside from just enjoying some beach time, there are other things to do! There are some great splash zones on both islands, and the one at Lookout is huge! On Castaway, there are two slide/playground areas located in the water. No paying extra for these, like you will at some beaches! You can snorkel in both locations, and at Castaway, it’s in a protected cove with some sunken Disney treasures to find. You can bring your own gear or rent some on the islands.

8. Kids’ Clubs – I have great news for parents! The kids’ clubs are available on the islands. You can drop them off to play if you want some time alone, or maybe they just want to enjoy more time with the friends they made there.

9. Food is Included – Another possible nuisance when planning your port days is finding food ashore. No worries at Lookout and Castaway. There’s lunch and some snacks, and it’s yummy!

10. There are Shops – In addition to some Bahamian shops on the islands, there are also shops full of Disney-themed merchandise. All purchases on the island are made with your Key to the World card and charged to your onboard account. So don’t worry about having cash!

Are the islands your favorite ports? Why or why not?

  • Haven’t made it to Lookout. But we find Castaway a wonderful quiet day of sun, beach, and water.

Though we have a lovely tip – staying on the boat can yield some amazing service from the team onboard! Since we’ve been on many cruises we opted to stay onboard one day at Castaway. While the Aquaduck Coaster wasn’t open all day, the pools and funnel vision were good to go. There were only a few others onboard so the staff really went out of their way to make us VIP Royalty!

    • You’re absolutely right about staying onboard! I stayed onboard at Lookout last week (because I’ve been many times and wanted empty ship pictures), and it was so fun! We had a great time walking around and talking to everyone.
