Customize The Disney Genie Tip Board For Speed

If you want to use Lightning Lane, you have to use the My Disney Experience app to select Lightning Lane return times from the Tip Board screen. In my last Genie blog post, I demonstrated that return times can and do fluctuate, so you’ll want to refresh the Genie page to see the latest times available.

Refreshing the page requires you to be at the top of the page to do a “drag down” gesture on your phone.  Once you do that, you’ve got to scroll down to check a specific attraction, then scroll back up to the top to refresh, over and over again. It’s a hassle.

Here’s a solution to reduce the need for scrolling and make it faster for you to find good Lightning Lane return times.

The Tip Board has a feature to pin your selected attraction to the top of the Tip Board.

The directions on the Tip Board page say to “use the Disney Genie service to select your top experiences.” To “select your top experiences” you have to go to the My Day tab, find the section “An Incredible Disney Park Day Awaits”, and click “Get Started.”

Unfortunately, you can only “get started” if you or someone in your party has a Park Pass Reservation and you’re visiting in the near future (roughly the next 5 days).

If you meet that criteria and click “Get Started”, this will be enough for the option on the Tip Board to show top experiences. Select the attractions you want to have pinned to the top of your Tip Board on the My Top Picks screen and click Continue.

If you go back to the Tip Board and look under My Top Picks for today, the Tip Board will show your preferred attractions at the top of the page.

If you made My Top Picks for a different park, the Tip Board will just tell you to use the Disney Genie service to select the attractions. (But you had already have done this step to see the message!)

Fortunately, there is also a link to Edit Selections. By clicking the link it will take you directly to the list of attractions and show the attractions you already selected. You can change the attractions or just click the continue button.

After clicking the continue button, your top attractions will be at the top of the Tip Board.
Even if you find no value in the base Disney Genie features, going through the setup and choosing your “Top Picks” will make the Tip Board more useful. If you are watching specific attraction(s) for Lightning Lane return times just include those attraction(s) in your “Top Picks.” As you complete attractions remove them from your “Top Picks” and you will have a concise list of attractions to get future Lightning Lane return times.

To quickly refresh without doing all this work, or if you can’t because you don’t have tickets but you’re still curious, click the name of the ride you’re currently at on the tip board, then click the LL logo on the ride description page. The tip page refreshes and you’re back at the same spot on the tip page.

Thanks. I did not know the LL on the attraction detail page was a hyperlink. And it does work as you describe on my Android phone.

You’re welcome. I like to click things. Was playing around with genie quite a bit on launch day before I had plans to visit the park. Now I’m going over Christmas and can use it for real. Yay! Not expecting to get a whole lot with it but mainly want to watch shows and enjoy Christmas with warm temps instead of our Midwestern cold.

Can one just click the Tip Board tab to refresh, not matter how one has scrolled down? Seems to work from home…

For me, if I’m on the tip board tab and I click the Tip Board tab, it doesn’t refresh at least on my Android. If I do it on the iPhone, it does refresh, but it loads what I was recently at, but not necessarily what I was last on, so if I scroll to muppets in DHS and stay for a few seconds, then move to Slinky, click Tip Board tab, the page refreshes but takes me back to muppets.

100% of the time from either phone if I click the ride name then LL logo on ride description page, the tip page refreshes and I’m right at the ride I was looking at.

Is there a limit to how many things you can add to your Top Picks list?

There is a limit when selecting “Top Picks” for Genie. When choosing “Edit Selection” from the Tip Board there does not seem to be a limit.

Jesus, could Disney have made all of this Genie garbage any less user-friendly? We know they can and likely will make it even more expensive. Oh for Fast Pass+! Fire Chapek!

No kidding. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent human being, and this is so overly complicated and counterintuitive. Who in their right mind rolled this out and thought anyone would enjoy putting this much work into their vacation day?

I wish they would just go back to the old A-E tickets… that you could buy on your phone.

I’ve read your helpful blog posts, thanks so much, but there’s one question I haven’t seen answered (or I missed it!). Do you have an option of times for the Individual Lightning Lane, either Genie+ or paid? Or do they only offer you one option for return time? It seems like it would be easier to plan out your day if you could select the time — especially for the paid experiences (so you have time to hit the other popular rides at park opening, then rest/have lunch, then hit the top attraction). Thanks again.

We are going in a couple of weeks. Is there a way I can get back to a specific article using my iphone or copy it for later use?

    Thanks

What I would do is just bookmark those blog articles in a separate folder in your phone browser (Safari).

From what I have read, seen and observed by monitoring the app, it appears that for most parks, there are very few Genie+ Selections available by the late afternoon. What on earth do people do during the evening? Is it even worth going to the parks at night anymore? I mean, unless you want to park your butt on a curb on Main Street and wait two hours to watch fireworks? We go primarily for the rides. I don’t want to pay for a service and then find it’s only useful for a portion of my day. It’s like the parks have turned into a Downtown Disney – just another place to eat and shop.
