Before people flood the inbox with comments, I want to state on the record that I love Mickey Waffles. They are a quintessential Disney breakfast food, and I hope that they last for at least my lifetime without any changes to that amazing flavor and style. That said, sometimes it is nice to have a breakfast that goes beyond the Mickey Waffle and the standard breakfast fare (eggs, some sort of pork product, etc.). Here are five choices for breakfast options at Walt Disney World that go beyond normal breakfast offerings.
Chances are, if you end up on the weekend at The Wave for breakfast, you’ll find a large number of locals dining here. The fresh, seasonal flavors and largely reasonable (for Disney) prices, plus relative ease in securing last-minute reservations, make it a solid choice. The buffet tends to get most of the attention, with items like seasonal yogurt parfaits and fruit salad with popping boba, but you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who skips the sweet potato pancakes with local honey butter. And for the Mickey Waffle crowd, you can get those here as well–but in a multigrain format. It doesn’t quite taste the same as the “normal ones”, but then you can always eat two because it’s healthy…right?
Boma and The Mara
Depending on whether you’re looking for a quick bite before heading to the parks or a more laid back meal, and depending on your budget, both Boma (the table service buffet) and The Mara (the quick service option) at Animal Kingdom Lodge are wonderful options for unique offerings. Some of the more unique dishes found at breakfast include bobotie (an African-style meatloaf with an egg custard on top) and pap and chakalaka (think grits with a tomato stew). Although these dishes may seem exotic, the flavors are not so unusual that they would turn off even the slightly adventurous eater.

By far, the best bargain for a unique breakfast can be found hiding at a Value resort. At around the same price that you’d pay for a breakfast combo at a fast food restaurant, you can get something that is unique, healthy, and simply delicious. Quite possibly one of my favorite breakfast options at Walt Disney World is the breakfast sandwich made with paneer (Indian cheese), spinach, and lightly spiced (but not spicy) roasted cauliflower served on naan (Indian flatbread). Sometimes I’ll pair it with a smoothie or fresh fruit, but even by itself, it is a wonderful meal for a very reasonable price. Landscape of Flavors also offers a wide variety of standard breakfast food and, if you’re looking for something even more unique, a vegan scramble made with seitan and tofu.
Grand Floridian Café
One of the few places to really embrace the “brunch is better” theme is the Grand Floridian Café. There’s such a variety of brunch dishes served that it is hard to know where to start: Lobster Benedict, Miso-Glazed Salmon, Cheese Blintz, a Reuben sandwich, and Cobb Salad are just some of the specialties that you’ll find on the menu. My personal favorite dish to order is the Floridian Pancakes–with roasted pecans, dried cranberries, and house-made orange butter. You do have to bring a sweet tooth to finish that dish, though!
Akershus Royal Banquet Hall
Generally, character buffets don’t tend to be the most creative in terms of food. Let’s face it, you’re there for the characters, not for the calories. Akershus, located in Epcot’s Norway pavilion, has some surprising additions to the breakfast buffet to reflect the Norwegian heritage of its location. Options like herring, salmon gravlax, and peppered mackerel may not appeal to most kids or non-adventurous eaters, but it is delightful that Disney didn’t shy away from including them here. Although I’m not a fan of those fish options, I do love the Gjetost cheese–it has almost a caramel type of flavor to it, and is one of the most unique cheeses you will find at Walt Disney World.
