Disney in a Minute: Who is Figment?
We’re here with a series of quick posts, “Disney in a Minute,” bite-sized nuggets of information that can better help you understand a Disney term or planning topic. Enjoy!
Figment is a purple dragon character specifically created for EPCOT’s Journey into Imagination attraction. His name is derived from the phrase “figment of my imagination” – meaning something fabricated, created, invented, or made up. EPCOT’s Figment is an impish, playful, good-hearted trickster.
Figment, along with his handler friend Dreamfinder, were the stars of the first iteration of Journey into Imagination, which ran from 1983-1999. The attraction was refurbished in 1999 with Figment in greatly reduced role. Following numerous guest complaints about missing the original Figment, the attraction was again revamped in 2002. That version of Journey into Imagination is currently running, with Figment again prominently featured.
While Figment appeared in a handful of short films in the 1980s and has made cameos in the Pixar films Inside Out and Toy Story 4, he is truly a character of EPCOT. He does not appear at any of the other Disney theme parks.
A fan favorite, Figment can be found on a range of merchandise (including a coveted popcorn bucket) and as a meet & greet character. Due to his association with creativity, Figment has been the de facto mascot of EPCOT’s winter Festival of the Arts events, which celebrate the power of imagination.
