Happy 16th Birthday La Cava del Tequila!

On August 29 the single best bar on Walt Disney World property will celebrate their 16th birthday! La Cava del Tequila is located inside the Mexico Pavilion of EPCOT and we have been honored to spend so much time and money at this spectacular center for spirits and fun.

Javier and a sober Len.

Len Loves La Cava

Our obsession with La Cava started more than a decade ago when Len was hosting a podcast listener event and racked up a corporate card bill that still upsets the TouringPlans accountants. This was the start of a long and tipsy union. If you’ve ever walked through those iron gates, then you know exactly why we keep going. The staff is the best in their field, the menu is expertly curated, the environment is welcoming and friendly, and the quality of the experience is worth every cent plus a giant tip.

It’s important to note now that we always pay for our drinks. We are not and have never been sponsored by La Cava. We evangelize on their behalf because we believe everyone should experience this place at least once. You won’t feel like you’re in a theme park bar. You’re going to feel like you’re home and if you’re in the mood to chat, you’ll likely walk out having met new friends.

More Than Just One Glass

If you’re looking to learn even a tiny bit about tequila or you want to give a tequila lover in your life the greatest gift they’ll ever get, then you need to sign up for the La Cava Experience. This event will cost you $180 + tax per person (gratuity is included) and will make a memory you’ll have for years. Well, at least the first part when your Tequila Ambassador (we LOVE Humberto and Hilda!) completes their introduction and explains the aromatics in front of you. After that, it’s between you and the tequila. We’ve done the La Cava Experience several times (yes, we paid, and yes, every single time was for research, so mind your beeswax) and have learned something new each time. Come with a full belly to make sure you don’t tap out early. They’ll provide chips and guacamole but the tequila is stronger than an entire basket of chips, so be ready.

Don’t make plans for after the La Cava Experience.

Famous Names

You really never know who you’re going to see when you’re at La Cava. Javier and team have built relationships with lots of famous folks over the years that have turned into drink collaborations. Most well-known are the occasions Neil Patrick Harris stops in – he even has his own monogrammed table! You can also see Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul from time to time endorsing their Dos Hombres Mezcal. Our favorite celeb encounter at La Cava has been with the ethereal and kind Lily Aldridge. Beyond her modeling and acting work – which is vast – Lily is the namesake of the famous Lily Margarita at La Cava. There have been several iterations of this fragrant drink but they all involve some heavenly-smelling smoke and a beautiful margarita at the end. If you see the smoke gun come out, see if you can get close enough to catch the scent. Or, even better, just order one!

The glorious and kind Lily Aldridge.

If you’re looking for more locally famous faces, La Cava has them, too! Once you have the good fortune to meet Hilda at La Cava, you’ll have a forever friend when you come to visit. Hilda Castillo Kirkman is a Tequila Connoisseur as well as a Tequila and Mezcal Ambassador who was born and raised in Tequila, Mexico, until she came to work at La Cava. All of the education, awards, and honors aside, Hilda is one of the most gentle and kind humans we have ever encountered. It’s not possible to walk away from a chat and a drink with her without a smile and a fuzzy heart. Even if you’re just going in for a club soda, it’s worth the wait in line to get in a few words with this gem of a human.

Hilda is one of the very best reasons to visit La Cava.

Our Current Obsession

Yes, the Avocado and Cucumber Margaritas will always be fantastic, but if you’re in the mood for something with a kick, try the Crystal Inferno. Don’t be afraid of the heat – it’s more warm and spicy than anything. This is the drink that has been our go-to for a while. Try it once while you’re at a table if you can, so you get the full branded ice for added drama.

Two, please.

If you happen to be in EPCOT over the next few days, AND you’re 21 years old and up, we strongly encourage you to stop in at La Cava to find out why they’re so loved. If you get the chance to go once, we promise you’ll be back. Wish them a very happy birthday and be sure to save us a spot!
