La Cava Experience Review

If you’re one of those people who books a beverage seminar every time you sail with Disney Cruise Line, I have very good news for you: there’s an experience at Walt Disney World that comes remarkably close to recreating that feeling on land. And if you’re not one of those people – or, like me, you don’t consider yourself particularly knowledgeable about tequila – you shouldn’t stop reading either!

The La Cava Experience at EPCOT is technically a guided tasting of tequila and other agave spirits. But calling it a tequila tasting really undersells what happens during that hour. It’s part premium beverage seminar, part small-group class, and part World Showcase cultural experience. I walked in knowing very little about tequila. I walked out about 80 minutes later with six excellent pours under my belt and a dramatically greater appreciation for the history, craftsmanship, and people behind them.

Two people who were excited to dive into the world of tequila!

What Is the La Cava Experience?

Despite the name, the La Cava Experience doesn’t actually take place inside La Cava del Tequila in the Mexico pavilion. Instead, you’ll head across the promenade to La Hacienda de San Angel, the waterfront restaurant on the World Showcase Lagoon side of the pavilion. La Hacienda isn’t open for lunch, so the restaurant becomes a private setting for the experience rather than trying to squeeze a tequila seminar into the wonderfully atmospheric but very small and frequently packed La Cava.

The experience is offered daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and is scheduled to last about an hour. Ours ran closer to 80 minutes, although I wouldn’t build your EPCOT plans around getting that bonus time. I’ll explain why ours likely ran long in a minute.

The price is $180 per person plus tax (gratuity is included). You can reserve it the same way you’d book other Walt Disney World dining experiences, through My Disney Experience or Disney’s website, or by calling. This isn’t a Cinderella’s Royal Table-at-60-days situation, but reservations do sell out, so I wouldn’t recommend deciding you want to do it after you’ve already arrived at EPCOT.

Not Just Six Glasses of Tequila

When we arrived, each place was already set for what looked much more like a tasting class than a visit to a bar. There were separate glasses labeled Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, Extra Añejo, and Joven; a separate class of mezcal; agave nectar and a palate cleanser; water; and chips and guacamole.

But my favorite part of the setup was the wooden sensory board at each seat. It held ingredients including coffee beans, cinnamon, chocolate, mint, crackers, and citrus. These weren’t just cute props for Instagram photos. We’d use them throughout the experience to identify aromas and flavors in what we were drinking.

That distinction matters, because the six pours aren’t dropped in front of you with a “have fun!” and an explanation of what bottle is in which glass. Christina, who led our experience, guided us through them one at a time. We learned how to properly smell and taste each spirit, what we should be paying attention to, and how the aromas and flavors on the board related to what was in our glasses.

There was also an agave-based palate cleanser available between tastes when we needed to reset.

Not A Tasting – An Experience

Our particular session only had five guests, and that made the experience exceptionally good. Rather than standing at the front of the room and delivering a formal presentation, Christina sat with us. She asked questions, figured out what we already knew, let the conversation go in directions that interested us, and adjusted what she was teaching accordingly.

With a larger group, I would expect the experience to feel somewhat more like a traditional presentation or class. But even then, the subject matter goes far beyond “here are six tequilas; here’s what they taste like.”

We talked about different varieties of agave, the distinction between tequila and mezcal, how both are produced, the aging process, and how production methods change the finished product. We also spent a significant amount of time on the history behind all of it.

And this is where the experience became something different for me. I went into La Hacienda knowing almost nothing about tequila. I certainly didn’t understand the depth of expertise involved in producing it, or how much history is contained in one glass. We talked about Indigenous traditions and beliefs surrounding agave, how these drinks evolved over generations, and the families and producers who continue that work today.

By the end, I wasn’t just better at identifying flavors in tequila. I appreciated the product differently because I understood more about the people and culture behind it. That’s exactly what I want from an experience in the World Showcase!

There are plenty of places around EPCOT where you can buy a drink from another country. This was an opportunity to spend an hour actually learning something about that country through one of its most important products and traditions. The drinks are the vehicle for the experience rather than the entire point of it.

Our agave ambassador, Christina, taking her time to invite us into sharing her passion for tequila!

So, What Are You Drinking?

The lineup can change, but my experience included six agave spirits, several of which were made or selected specifically for La Cava:

  1. Real Minero Tobalá Capón – an agave distillate made for La Cava
  2. Mijenta Blanco Maestra Selection No. 2
  3. Caballito Cerrero Reposado – an agave distillate made only for La Cava
  4. Siete Leguas Añejo French Oak Single Barrel
  5. Arette Gran Clase Extra Añejo – made only for La Cava
  6. El Tequileño Joven – made for La Cava

This is not a flight made up of bottles that happen to be sitting behind the bar. Disney describes some of the spirits used in the experience as exclusive to La Cava and unavailable elsewhere, and our cast members confirmed that multiple pours in our lineup had been created specifically for La Cava.

They’re also just really, really good. I already knew I was a mezcal girlie, so it probably won’t surprise anyone that the Real Minero Tobalá Capón was my favorite of the entire experience. Among the tequilas, I especially loved both the Arette Gran Clase Extra Añejo and the El Tequileño Joven.

But there wasn’t a bad pour in the bunch. And this wasn’t really a tasting where I found myself ranking six glasses from first to sixth anyway. Each one was there to teach us something. Being guided through the progression and understanding why the spirits smelled or tasted different was much more interesting than simply deciding which one I liked best.

Is the La Cava Experience Worth $180?

This was the question I had before going in, and it’s probably the question most people will have when they see the price. Let’s acknowledge that $180 per person is a lot of money. This is a special-occasion add-on, not something I can suggest that every family casually plug into an EPCOT afternoon.

But you are also tasting six genuinely high-end agave spirits, including bottles and selections that you can’t simply go buy at your local liquor store. Even before assigning any value to the instruction, the pours themselves represent a significant part of what you’re paying for. These aren’t inexpensive spirits being dressed up by an elaborate presentation. Based on my estimates (and they’re just estimates), you’re getting more than the value of the class in just the pours alone.

Then add the part that I think is much harder to put a dollar figure on: you have a tequila expert spending an hour teaching you how to understand and appreciate them. For me, that’s what pushed the value over the top.

Our small group admittedly helped. With only five attendees, we got a remarkably personalized experience and more time with Christina than I would expect in a full session. Our scheduled hour stretched to around 80 minutes largely because there was so much conversation happening around the table. You shouldn’t count on getting exactly that version. But the guided education is built into the experience regardless.

Disney Cruise Line Beverage Seminar Fans, This One Is for You

I keep coming back to Disney Cruise Line because it’s the easiest comparison I can make.

One of the things DCL does particularly well is take a handful of drinks and turn them into an experience. A good beverage seminar isn’t memorable because you consumed several small glasses of alcohol. It’s memorable because the cast member leading it teaches you something, answers your questions, walks you through what you’re tasting, and sends you away knowing more than you did when you arrived.

That is exactly what this felt like. Except the La Cava Experience adds another layer by placing that kind of seminar inside World Showcase and tying the drinks directly to Mexican history and culture.

If you’re a regular at Disney Cruise Line bourbon, tequila, wine, whiskey, or mixology seminars and you’ve wished Walt Disney World offered something comparable, I would put this very high on your list. And you absolutely do not need to arrive as a tequila enthusiast.

I’m proof of that. I don’t consider myself a tequila fan, and I knew very little about it before this experience. I adored it. In some ways, knowing so little probably made the class even more valuable because there was so much for me to discover.

On the other hand, I can’t imagine someone who already loves tequila being disappointed. The quality of the spirits and the depth of knowledge available give enthusiasts plenty to dig into, especially if you have a smaller or particularly interactive group.

The Bottom Line

The La Cava Experience costs $180 per person, and that price alone means it won’t make sense for everyone. If you’re simply looking for a good margarita during your lap around World Showcase, there are much less expensive ways to accomplish that goal.

But that’s also not what this is. It’s the best of a Disney Cruise Line beverage seminar combined with the kind of cultural education that only the World Showcase can deliver.

The beverages alone made the price feel worthwhile to me. Everything Christina taught us on top of that made the La Cava Experience one of the easiest $180 Disney upcharges I could ever recommend.

Thanks so much Becky. This is certainly something special and added. Since your class was so small, do you know what the normal or max class size can be?
