The Magic, The Memories, and Merch! May 2015 Photo Report of the Disney Outlet Store

MMM positiveMay has come to a close and the start of the Theme Park Summer (AKA Some Attractions Are Worth Melting For) is upon us. In case you weren’t paying attention, May just happened to be one of the biggest of the year. Star Wars Weekends started, and I even wrote a handy dandy guide on how you can survive it in Six Simple Steps. Universal had a busy month, officially announcing the new King Kong attraction, a partnership with Nintendo that will bring new attractions to the Florida parks, and a brand new ultra-themed water park in Volcano Bay that looks to compete with Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Meanwhile out in California Disneyland delivered the goods in a major way with their new Paint the Night electrical parade, debuting 60 new pressed pennies, added a new World of Color show, and even a new nighttime fireworks spectacular! Walt Disney World fans weren’t left out in the cold either, as the Lunching Pad at the Magic Kingdom has a brand new crisped rice treat that looks like a flip flop. Everyone came up a winner this month!

Enough jibber jabber! Who is ready to hit the Outlets? Remember that clicking on any picture will open a full size version of it (don’t say we didn’t warn you).

Our first step is checking out the new Tsum Tsums that have arrived, which naturally have become the newest thing I’m addicted to. Here are two of our favorite pals from Toy Story, Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

IMG_8467
Toy Story Tsum Tsums.

There were also several puppies from 101 Dalmations along with Cruella Deville.

IMG_8470
How many of the 101 Dalmations have official names and are identifiable by fans? Do people have their favorites like the Seven Dwarfs?

More Toy Story options including a “The Claw” Alien (which I have been informed by The Powers That Be are named Little Green Men), Lotso, the Peas, and Hamm.

IMG_8468
More Toy Story Tsum Tsums.

And one last batch of Toy Story 2 characters with Stinky Pete, Woody, Bullseye, and Jessie. And yes, I bought every single one. It’s too late for me, SAVE YOURSELF.

We are smack dab in the middle of Star Wars Weekends, so it was a surprise to see a couple new Star Wars related pillows make their way to the Outlets. Both were originally $24.95 and reduced to $9.99. You better believe I bought the Donald Duck in Carbonite one.

IMG_8473
I know have this design in at least three different types of merchandise and it is one of my all time favorite Disney/Star Wars mashups.
IMG_8474
This one however…

I am a HUGE fan of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, but was surprised to see the limited edition MagicBands from last year’s event have made it to the Outlet. There were only 5,000 made and they were originally priced at $29.95. They were reduced to $14.99 (and I bought one.)

IMG_8471
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Magic Band.

The only thing I like more at WDW than the Christmas Party is Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, but those limited edition bands also ended up at the Outlet. I was initially floored by this fact, considering only 5,000 of each were made and both parties get more and more guests each year. I may be mistaken, but I think they were also the first “Limited Edition” MagicBands that you could buy (in that there is a set number. I think the “limited release” Haunted Mansion ones are “limited to the amount Disney can sell.”)

IMG_8472

Speaking of first time at the Outlets, this Christmas themed specialty MagicBand also arrived. I have no access to Disney’s sales numbers, but I would love to see how MagicBands and their accessories are selling, because all the evidence I can find suggests “not well.” In my experience, the accessories just fall off, and it’s hard to display them so I think you cut down on the amount of people who want to collect them all. The new packaging is definitely a step in the right direction though.

I absolutely LOVED these Radiator Springs Racers pens, however the price was next level bananas. Originally $9.95, these were reduced to $4.99 but you can tell there is very little ink in each. Not sure who the target demo is because you kids would probably immediately lose the themed caps and they just are substantial enough for adults. Love the idea though.

IMG_8428
That’s professional level ability to set up the products. Look at how the logos face you, Dear Reader!

Speaking of Radiator Springs, these postcards featuring Stanley were originally $1.95, now $0.29. I bought one and mailed it to TouringPlans’ own Guy Selga out in Disneyland with a note saying “Hey Mr. Deep Pockets and Short Arms, will you please start buying stuff so we don’t get your JUNK down here. Thanks. With Regards, XX, OO, Derek”

IMG_8465

I don’t understand this style of pen at all and I never will.

IMG_8464
The official pen of my suicide note.

A whole bunch of new buttons arrived at the Outlet…

IMG_8463
Buttons.

These were the ones worth spotlighting. Haunted Mansion, Mickey Mouse, a balloon, and of course the ubiquitous turkey leg.

IMG_8462
This marks the official 1,000 piece of merchandise for the Turkey Leg.

This pen is perfectly acceptable for young kids. I just can’t get over that original price. That would have been the day when my parents bought me a pen for $6.

IMG_8425
DID YOU KNOW: This is the type of pen Len Testa makes all TouringPlans bloggers sign their contracts with.

Wait, a second. Tinkerbelle?

TINKERBELLE?

TINKERBELLE?!!!

TINKERBELLE?!!!!!!!!!

Every single month I have to Google how to spell “Tinker Bell” so the Disney Grammar Police leave me alone and now I see “Tinkerbelle” is accepted? They need to make Xanax in stronger doses.

Here is one of those antennae toppers. This one is the best representations of what the summer Florida weather is like. IT IS SO HOT DOWN HERE THE SUN ITSELF CAN’T TAKE IT.

IMG_8423
I think that Kellogg’s two scoops of raisin bran sun has a strong case of gimmick infringement here.

I bought a couple of these Mickey Head magnets. Another case of not a bad value at all  at $2 a pop, but you’d have to be sniffing glue to buy them at $6 each.

IMG_8424
Originally $5.95 each.  Maybe some of these items are coming from the gift shop out in Burbank where Bob Iger and Tom Staggs shop.

Earlier this year I did  an Observations piece on Downtown Disney and noticed this Minnie Mouse keychain. Like I said then, I like the design but it seems to fit more in the theme of Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort than anything Disney. Originally $6.95, now $2.99

IMG_8429
Minnie Mouse Keychain.

Ever want replicas of Disney food on your fridge? Originally $12.95 each, these magnets were reduced to $4.99. Good to see the churro here, one of the Six Most Iconic Snacks at the Magic Kingdom, but I’m actually terrified that I don’t see a turkey leg one. That might mean people are buying them.

IMG_8437
The Disney snacks we grew up with. In twenty years, #Millenials are going to reminisce about all the different types of Disney cupcakes they had.

What is it about flip flops?! As the intro said, one thing Disney debuted this month was a snack shaped like a flip flop and now this. And now that I think about it, there are several flip flop stores at Downtown Disney. I feel like I just woke up in some weird Twilight Zone episode. These were originally $13.95, reduced to $6.99.

IMG_8435
Thanks to Outlet Report readers I now know Chip is the one on the right, because he has a “chocolate chip nose.” Now I have to hurry up and finish this article because the car is running and the garage is filling up with carbon monoxide. Wish me luck!

Here is a Christmas themed pin featuring the Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights, and a Hanukkah one featuring Chip and Dale. This is the first time I have noticed a religious Disney pin, but I will now start keeping an eye out.

IMG_8431
These were originally $9.95, reduced to $4.99.

There were a TON of these jewelry boxes for sale. Maybe they were being sold for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day? All contained and earring and necklace set.

IMG_8421

IMG_8422
Closer look.

Not much for Muppets this month, but there was this awesome Gonzo plush. Originally $24.95, marked down to $12.99.

IMG_8341
The Great Gonzo.

Here’s a shirt from the John Lasseter collection. Originally $54.95(!) it has been marked down to $29.99.

IMG_8413
Would this we classified as “casual wear” “semi-formal” or “I just don’t care how I look today?”

Patriotic Mickey. Originally $36.95, now $14.99

IMG_8419
If Toby Keith happens to be on your Christmas shopping list, have I got the shirt for you…

WHAAAAAAT?! Originally $39.95, now $19.99

IMG_8369
I’ve been reading too many comic books, because this shirt actually reminds me of The Punisher.

Without cheating, how long did it takes you to figure out which attraction this shirt was for? Originally $29.95, now $12.99.

IMG_8417
All I can picture is the team for this shirt being like the one who created Poochie for The Simpsons. “We need to make it 20% more cool and hip!”

Tower of Terror shirt. Originally #24.95, now $12.99. Hard to believe this one didn’t fly off the shelves.

IMG_8393
WDW would make a fortune selling these to professional sports teams to be used as a concussion test. Someone gets their bell rung and you ask “would you wear this shirt?” If they say yes they are are immediately pulled from the game.

This is actually a BIG HERO 6 shirt. Originally $28.00, now $13.99. I think it said Big Hero 6 on the back, otherwise I never would have figured it out.

IMG_8403
Can someone translate?

Here’s a child size Big Hero 6 shirt. Originally $24.00, now $11.99

IMG_8458
Big Hero 6 shirt.

This is a classic Disney shirt and I’m a fan of it. Originally $19.95, now just $4.99.

IMG_8456
These are being cleared about because the new “The Dog Forget To Charge My Smart Phone” shirts will be released soon.

Here’s an interesting one, a shirt for the Jedi Training Academy. Originally $19.95, now $9.99. You’d think with this and the pillows they could still be selling them for full price during Star Wars Weekends (and maybe they are as well.)

IMG_8347
Jedi Training Academy shirt.

This is an adorable shirt for the Wilderness Lodge featuring Humphrey the Bear. Love it. Originally $24.95, now $12.99.

More resort like this please. This month we did a SATURDAY SIX on Port Orleans Riverside, and I’m looking forward to doing one on the Wilderness Lodge in the future.

I liked this Walt Disney World ’71 shirt. Cool logos all around.

Here is a Walt Disney World ‘ 71 high school letterman jacket. Originally $69.95, now $39.99.

How ’bout them patches?!

WDW college themed scarf. Originally $21.95, now $6.99.

Fingerless gloves. originally  $19.95, now $5.99.

Little Mermaid shirt. Originally $54.95, now $29.99. I’m thinking this was originally at Tren-D at Downtown Disney.

IMG_8382
Little Mermaid shirt.

Another Little Mermaid shirt. This one was originally $36.95, now $14.99. I personally love this style of art, but a lot of stuff with it (all princess based) has made its way to the Outlets.

IMG_8380
Little Mermaid shirt.

This Tinker Bell shirt was originally $52.95, now $29.99.

IMG_8378
You won’t be seeing too many male Disney characters in that pose…

Minnie Mouse “Born To Shop” shirt was originally $24.95, now $12.99, and may be reason we need Title IX to apply to theme park merchandise.

IMG_8452
Minnie Mouse shirt.

A three piece Minnie Mouse bag set. Originally $24.95, now $12.99.

IMG_8454
“From the people who brought you the new Tower of Terror logo!”

VERY rare to see anything D23 related at the Outlets, but here’s a Dumbo pin.

IMG_8368
If the D23 magazines ever make it to the Outlet I think I may be stocking up…

This Walt Disney World Golf pin was originally $19.95, now $5.99.

IMG_8395
To paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield, “What, when you buy a pin like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh? Oh, but it looks good on you though!’

Lots of glassware this month. Much of which I’ve seen at the Marketplace Co-op and World of Disney store at Downtown Disney. This Goofy’s Candy Co. glass was marked down $7.99

IMG_8361

Minnie’s Bake Shop glass also at $7.99.

Mickey’s Ice Cream Bar glass glass, again $7.99.

I enjoyed this Candy Cauldron one.

These Disney Star Wars cups look fantastic for kids. Marked down to $9.99.

Alice in Wonderland glassware. Marked down to $9.99

IMG_8356
Alice in Wonderland glasses.

I have absolutely no idea what this is. It was with the glass wear so I guess it is one of the weirdest shot glasses of all time.

IMG_8355
Minnie Mouse somethings.

This Minnie Mouse Colorforms-like set was reduced to $3.99.

IMG_8364
Minnie Mouse magnet set.

With the new name in place, expect more of the old Disney’s Polynesian Resort to appear at the Outlets. I bought this magnet. Reduced to $3.99.

IMG_8366
Disney’s Polynesian Resort magnet.

I bought this Tinker Bell magnet set at the Marketplace C0-op at it’s full price of $14.95, but it’s been brought down to $6.99 at the Outlets. It’s drawn by one of my favorite comic book artists, J Scott Campbell, who has done a surprising amount of work for Disney.

IMG_8362
Tinker Bell magnet set.

Tinker Bell photo frame was originally $34.95, reduced to $14.99. Note the “It’s All About Me!” at the bottom. What version of the character is this playing off of?

IMG_8445

It’s A SMall World mini-snow globe. Originally $16.95, reduced to $9.99. Has Disney characters like Peter Pan, Rapunzel, and Pinocchio mixed in.

By now most know how much I hate Disney Vinylmation, but the one set I love is the Park Starz series, and it’s because the artists are allowed to create  whatever they want and aren’t forced to try to make something out of the “Mickey Mold.” While some of the Limited Edition Park Starz have been at the Outlets before, this is the first time I have seen the regular ones. Originally $18.95 each, reduced down to $3.99. I bought two.

IMG_8398
Park Star vinylmation.

I understand these Disney Popcorn Eachez Vinylmation even less than regular Vinylmation. These were originally $19.95 each reduced down to $3.99. I also bought two as I figure they will make cute gifts for the young kids in our family.

IMG_8401
Disney Popcorn Eachez Vinylmation. And this will be the last time I ever write the word “Eachez.”

Animal Kingdom postcard set. Not a bad value at $2.99.

A couple of new Alice in Wonderland Christmas ornaments arrived, both reduced to $4.99 each.

We’ll close out this month’s shopping excursion with a look at the Donald Duck-as Darth Maul coffee cup. Originally $19.95, reduced to $9.99, this is the greatest cup of all time because it put horns exactly where your hand would be while holding it.

IMG_8353

There are actually two Disney outlet stores in Orlando. Both are in Orlando Premium Outlet shopping complexes, and they are called Disney’s Character Warehouse, presumably because The Land Of Misfit Toys was already trademarked. There is one Character Warehouse located on International Drive close to Universal Studios (4951 International Dr, Orlando, FL 32819), and the other is on Vineland Avenue, right across I-4 near the exits to Disney World (8200 Vineland Ave, Orlando, FL 32821). For this edition of MMM, we went to the location near Universal.

IMG_8415
Bought this for the house but girlfriend had other ideas for it. Unrelated, anyone know the number for a good proctologist? Asking for a friend.

I get a lot of questions about this, so we’ll answer them here. You can order any item from the Disney Outlet Stores by calling the WDW Merchandise Guest Services (877-560-6477) There is a catch though, if the item is still available they will charge you full retail price for it, plus shipping. The Outlet Stores themselves do not ship merchandise.

We also did an edition of Magic, Memories, and Junk for a non-Disney owned Outlet Store, and for you merch addicts like myself, you may also enjoy a look at the official Disney merchandise available on the Disney Cruise Line, Castaway Cay, and at the Orlando International Airport.

  • I want to be there for the garage sale when your girlfriend draws that line in the sand so I can get all the cool (useless) stuff (junk) you bought for even less than outlet prices.
…because my significant other made me sell all my “cool stuff” at our yard sale. 🙁

  • Ugh, am I the only one that thinks the Tinker Bell (Tinkerbelle??) poses are getting more and more sex kitten like as opposed to cute little fairy like?? I would never buy half that stuff for my girls!

And I loved the “Minnie somethings”, cracked me up!

  • I keep hoping they will open one of these in California too! Been so bummed since the old Character Outlet stores closed up shop.

  • Thank you for this topic! I found myself looking forward to this post this month. Keep them coming! Can the Magic Bands sold at the outlet be linked (actually used)? Um, Chip’s nose is black, like a dark chocolate chip, not reddish-brown. So, Chip is on the left side of those flip-flop pins. Do you get that a lot? Tinkerbelle–just. wrong. Thanks, Jeanine, for explaining the Big Hero 6 shirt. I liked the Title IX joke, too!

  • My favourite touringplans.com article, I was so happy to see it this morning. Nice Title IX joke!

  • Fun post as always. On the Big Hero 6 shirt, each box has a stylized character name in English–Fred, Hiro, Wasabi, or Baymax–and next to it the same name in Japanese katakana.
