Primeval Whirl is Officially a Seasonal Attraction
After months and months of the attraction being down for an unexpected refurbishment, it is now expected that Primeval Whirl at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be closed for the remainder of the year and likely into the new year.
As you can see from the screenshot above from Disney’s own website, this attraction is now listed officially as “Temporarily Closed”. With seasonal attractions, it is possible that Primeval Whirl may reopen during the busy holiday season, but given the rumors of the issues that may have caused it to close so abruptly, it seems like it may be unlikely.
For those who don’t know, Primeval Whirl was a coaster that mirrored the story of what was going on in the attraction Dinosaur, but in a fun and unique way, with Guests taking a “time machine” to attempt to save a dino while trying to escape before the asteroid hit Earth.

I have only been on this one a couple of times, but really enjoyed it. Two of our visits my daughter was too short and cried to get on. She even tried to use her Bippidy Bippidy hairstyle to get on without luck. She finally got to go on it and wanted to keep riding it, listing it in her top 5 rides!
There is something to be said for an area that neighboring attractions with plenty of capacity that are liked by the young child (Triceratops Spin) and the tween. Riding Spin with my younger kids, while the slightly older crew enjoyed Whirl will be missed.
Yeah, it’s just a cheap wild mouse style ride. But it’s an excellent version of one, is well themed and usually had a very short lines.
Good riddance to Primeval Whirl. It’s really quite atrocious!

Maybe this is just the beginning of the shutdown of Dinoland USA and the space can be re-purposed for something more useful (like an Indiana Jones area complete with an Indiana Jones Adventure ride in the Dinosaur: Countdown to Extinction building).

My one experience riding Primeval Whirl was so bad – as in, I found the ride physically painful, something I’ve only otherwise experienced while trying to ride the Matterhorn with sunstroke – that I’ve never gone again. I’m sorry for fans of the ride, and maybe I just had one bad experience, but I mostly feel surprised that it took Disney this long.
Well that stinks. Last year my son was too short to ride but wanted to so bad. He’s been talking about “the spinny dinosaur ride” for a solid 7 months hoping he would be tall enough for our trip in January. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve had to measure him to check. (He’s still too short.)
Triceratops Spin is still open. It may not be a “spinny dinosaur ride” but is a “spiney dinosaur ride”.
True, but he’s been on that, he really wanted to go on the other one. He’s going to be disappointed, but he’s going to be in Disney World so he will get over it. At least I have time to break the news to him so there will not be a meltdown at the park. 🙂
