Disney Costume Ideas for Groups

The calendar might still say it’s summer, but spooky season is upon us. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World is already in full swing and the Disney Cruise Line Halloween on the High Seas sailings start in a few weeks. For many folks, this means COSTUMES. And since you’re probably traveling with a posse, this means GROUP COSTUMES. We’re here with some Disney-centric ideas for group adornment.

Before we get started, here are a few caveats :

• While guests are encouraged to wear costumes to these events, costumes are absolutely NOT required. You are under no obligation to dress up for any Disney-related Halloween event. If costumes are not your thing, then feel free to skip them entirely.
• If you do decide to dress up, you’re not required to dress in Disney garb. While most guests at the Disney venues do dress in Disney-related costumes, there are plenty of others who dress in the costumes of non-Disney brands. You won’t be out of place in Minions or Harry Potter costumes at Disney’s Halloween party. Similarly, there is no requirement that your costume represent any “character” at all. If your squad wants to dress like your favorite snack foods or traffic symbols, that totally works.
• Keep the weather in mind when selecting your costumes. Autumn in Orlando is still hot, even in late October, even in the evening. Your Chewbacca costume maybe epic, but consider whether you want to be wearing the equivalent of a bearskin rug when it’s 85 degrees and humid. In general, you’ll want to keep your Florida costumes as light and breathable as possible. A few of the DCL Halloween sailings take place in Northern climates where more bulky costumes might be comfortable, but guests sailing to the Bahamas or Caribbean islands will also want to be mindful of the temperature. Minimalist costumes like embellished tee shirts are headbands may be all you need to convey your idea, while still allowing you to keep cool.
• Both Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line have strictly enforced rules regarding costumes. While the wording is slightly different for these venues, the upshot for both is that costumes may not be offensive, may not include weapons, and may not drag on the group. • You’re certainly welcome to wear commercial costumes purchase at shopDisney.com or a place like Party City or Spirit Halloween, but homemade or handcrafted costumes are charming and often quite creative. If you’re not a do-it-yourself sort, Etsy is a good source of unique costume elements.
• The Disney film empire (including Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars) is enough to inspire a nearly endless stream of costume ideas, but if you want to stand out from the crowd, think beyond movies and TV. The best MNSSHP costume I ever saw was a group dressed as the characters in the last scene of WDW’s Carousel of Progress attraction.
• Consider if there are particular settings that might enhance your costume photo ops. For example, if your group is dressed as the seven dwarfs, you might make it a point to pose with Disney’s Snow White character.

And now onto the costume ideas …

The ideas listed below are obviously just a starting point; the possibilities are nearly endless. Also bear in mind that their is flexibility in the numbers for most of these groups. For example, friends of mine, a family of three, booked a Halloween sailing on the Disney Wish last year. They opted to dress as Sleeping Beauty’s fairy friends Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. I ended up joining them with a relatively last minute booking. Rather than a wholesale change from a three-person costume to a four-person costume, I joined as a related character (Maleficent) from the same franchise.
