Animal Kingdom Rope Drop Guide
Animal Kingdom might be the easiest Walt Disney World park to rope drop successfully … for now! With fewer headliner attractions than the other parks, relatively predictable crowd patterns, and some of the earliest opening times at Disney World, a smart morning strategy can save you up to two hours of waiting and leave most of your afternoon free to explore.
But Animal Kingdom also has one of the most lopsided rope drop situations at Walt Disney World. Almost everyone who arrives for Early Entry is headed to the same attraction: Avatar Flight of Passage. And if you’re not interested in riding it, your strategy can look completely different.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about rope dropping Animal Kingdom, including transportation, security, Early Entry, and which attractions to prioritize at regular opening.
Keep in mind, these are not touring plans. They are tips and strategies to make the most of your morning. You can create and optimize a custom touring plan for your specific date(s) and priorities if you want even more precision!

Getting to Animal Kingdom: Transportation and Arrival Timing
Animal Kingdom has the simplest transportation options of any Walt Disney World theme park. You’re either arriving by bus or by car. There’s no monorail, Skyliner, boat, or walking path from a nearby resort. If you’re staying at a Disney resort, buses will drop you off near the main entrance. If you’re driving or using rideshare, there’s a large parking lot with relatively easy access to the park.
One thing worth considering is that Animal Kingdom frequently opens earlier than the other theme parks, sometimes with Early Entry beginning as early as 7:30 a.m. That means transportation can start running very early, too!
Disney resort buses may begin arriving before the parking lot opens. If you’re hoping to be among the first guests in line for Flight of Passage, taking Disney transportation can sometimes give you an advantage over driving.
So when should you arrive? Here are my recommendations:
- If you have Early Entry: Aim to be at the park entrance 30–45 minutes before Early Entry begins, especially if Flight of Passage is your first priority.
- If you don’t have Early Entry: Aim to arrive at the park entrance about 30 minutes before regular opening.
If you’re driving, allow some extra time for parking and walking to security. And remember, those are arrival times at the park entrance, not the time you should leave your resort.

Security, Park Entry, and What Happens Before Opening
Security screening happens just outside the tapstiles at Animal Kingdom’s main entrance. There are fewer security lanes than at some of the other parks, so lines can get backed up, particularly when large groups of guests arrive at once.
One small tip that can save you time: keep your bag organized and remove your umbrella or glasses case before walking through security. These items, along with certain electronics, can trigger additional screening, and getting pulled aside for a bag check can eat into your rope drop advantage.
Once you’re through security, have your park admission ready. Depending on crowds, tapstiles open at different times at Animal Kingdom. It could be shortly before Early Entry begins, or it could be 30 minutes earlier.

After the tapstiles open, everyone can continue through the Oasis and across the bridge to Discovery Island. Guests without Early Entry are held there until regular park opening, while eligible guests proceed through one of two additional checkpoints.
- The left checkpoint provides access toward Pandora for Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. Guests can also position themselves there for Kilimanjaro Safaris, although it doesn’t open until regular park opening.
- The right checkpoint provides access toward Expedition Everest and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
At these checkpoints, Cast Members verify Early Entry eligibility using a linked MagicBand, ticket, or other accepted admission media. From there, guests continue toward their chosen attractions, sometimes waiting at secondary holding points until Cast Members release the crowds. Flight of Passage guests, for example, may be held near the bridge into Pandora before being walked toward the attraction.

That means getting through the entrance gates is only the first step. If you’re hoping to minimize your wait for Flight of Passage, getting a good position in that second group matters!

Early Entry Rope Drop: Which Attractions Should You Prioritize?
Early Theme Park Entry is available to guests staying at Disney-owned resorts and select other participating hotels. It gives eligible guests access to certain attractions 30 minutes before regular park opening.
At Animal Kingdom, this is a much easier decision than at the other parks. There is one attraction that offers substantially more potential time savings than the others.
Biggest Early Entry Time-Saver
Avatar Flight of Passage: If Flight of Passage is on your must-do list, this is almost certainly where you should start. It’s consistently one of the longest waits at Animal Kingdom, and queues build very quickly once Early Entry begins. In fact, roughly 90% of Early Entry guests historically head toward Pandora, with most of them lining up for Flight of Passage. That means your position in the initial crowd can make an enormous difference.
Flight of Passage is also a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction, so a successful rope drop can save you money if you were otherwise planning to purchase access.

Secondary Options
Na’vi River Journey: Na’vi is a good alternative if you’re visiting with younger children or aren’t interested in Flight of Passage. Its waits can grow throughout the morning, although they don’t typically increase quite as dramatically as Flight of Passage.

Expedition Everest: Everest is another Early Entry option, and because almost everyone else is heading toward Pandora, you can sometimes experience it with very little waiting. The downside is that Everest generally doesn’t develop substantial lines as quickly as Flight of Passage, so riding it during Early Entry may not save you much time compared to visiting later in the morning.
The important takeaway here is that Flight of Passage is really the only attraction where arriving for Early Entry can produce an enormous time savings. The others are useful options, but there’s much less pressure to get to them immediately.
Regular Rope Drop: Your Best Attraction Priorities
Regular park opening is when Animal Kingdom’s morning strategy gets especially interesting. That’s because several popular experiences, including Kilimanjaro Safaris, don’t operate during Early Entry. And unlike at Hollywood Studios or EPCOT, where many of the biggest attractions already have substantial lines by regular opening, there are still excellent opportunities to get ahead of the crowds.

Top Regular Rope Drop Priorities
Kilimanjaro Safaris: This is my top recommendation for regular rope drop. Safaris doesn’t operate during Early Entry, so regular opening is your first opportunity to ride. Waits can build quickly, particularly because guests are eager to see the animals during the cooler morning hours. But remember that some Early Entry guests may already be waiting near Africa before the Safari opens, so even arriving at regular rope drop doesn’t guarantee a walk-on.
Expedition Everest: Everest is another strong choice, especially if you’re looking to start with a thrill ride. Because so many Early Entry guests are focused on Pandora, Everest often has manageable waits during the first hour of regular opening.
Na’vi River Journey: Na’vi is a good option if you don’t have Early Entry and want to experience Pandora without joining the already substantial Flight of Passage queue. Its waits generally build more gradually, giving you a reasonable opportunity to ride early.
Secondary Option
Adventurers Outpost: Meeting Mickey and Minnie together in their explorer outfits is a great character experience, and the line can grow as more families arrive at the park. If character meets are important to your group, getting this done early can save some time later.

What If You Don’t Want to Ride Flight of Passage?
Here’s something you won’t hear very often in a Disney rope drop guide: if you’re not interested in Flight of Passage, you might not need to get up quite so early!
At Animal Kingdom, the overwhelming majority of Early Entry guests are heading to Pandora. And while you can certainly use Early Entry for Everest or Na’vi River Journey, neither is likely to save you nearly as much waiting as Flight of Passage. Many of Animal Kingdom’s other experiences don’t even open until regular park opening. Kilimanjaro Safaris, the animal trails, Wilderness Explorers activities, and most character experiences aren’t available during Early Entry.
So if you’re visiting with younger kids, or your family is more interested in animals and shows than thrill rides, you can have an excellent Animal Kingdom day without being among the very first guests in the park. I’d still recommend arriving for regular rope drop, particularly if you want to get an early Safari. But don’t feel obligated to wake everyone up before sunrise just because Early Entry is available to you.

Animal Kingdom also has some newer experiences that fit naturally into a less ride-focused morning. Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is a fun option for families, and Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station gives younger guests the opportunity to play and interact with Bluey and Bingo after taking the Wildlife Express Train.
Those aren’t experiences you need to rush toward at rope drop. Instead, use your early hours for whichever attractions or animal encounters are most important to your group, then work the shows and activities into the rest of your day.
Staying Ahead of the Crowds: Overall Park Flow
Animal Kingdom probably has the most predictable morning crowd pattern of any Walt Disney World park. The vast majority of Early Entry guests head straight toward Pandora, with Flight of Passage attracting the biggest crowd. A much smaller group heads toward Expedition Everest or other available attractions.
That concentration creates opportunities in the rest of the park. If you’re starting at Flight of Passage, consider whether you can fit in Na’vi River Journey before heading toward Africa. But keep an eye on the clock! Kilimanjaro Safaris can develop a substantial queue shortly after regular opening, and you don’t necessarily want to spend all of that valuable time in Pandora.
Once you’ve finished your Safari, Expedition Everest is a logical next stop. You can often experience it without a particularly long wait, especially if you’re visiting on a less crowded day.
The other thing working in your favor is Animal Kingdom’s relatively small number of rides. With DinoLand U.S.A. closed for the construction of Tropical Americas, there are even fewer ride attractions competing for your time. That means you can often complete most of the attractions with significant waits before lunchtime, particularly on days when Early Entry starts at 7:30 a.m. On later-opening days, finishing by noon is still a reasonable goal.
And that’s where Animal Kingdom really shines. Once you’ve knocked out the major attractions, you can spend the afternoon exploring animal trails, watching Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo, meeting characters, or enjoying the park at a much more relaxed pace. Alternatively, you can head back to your resort for a break or hop to another park. Animal Kingdom’s earlier opening time makes it particularly well suited for a productive morning followed by an entirely different afternoon.
Putting It All Together: Your Animal Kingdom Rope Drop Game Plan
So what does this look like when you put everything together?
If You Have Early Entry
Arrive at the park entrance 30–45 minutes before Early Entry begins. Once inside and on Discovery Island, head toward the left eligibility checkpoint and position yourself for Flight of Passage.
If you’re near the front of the crowd, you may be able to finish Flight of Passage before regular opening. Depending on the time remaining and current waits, consider Na’vi River Journey or make your way toward Kilimanjaro Safaris. After your Safari, head toward Expedition Everest, then transition to animal trails, character experiences, and shows.
If Flight of Passage isn’t important to your group, consider using Early Entry for Na’vi River Journey or Everest instead. Or skip Early Entry altogether and arrive for regular opening.
If You Don’t Have Early Entry
Arrive at the park entrance about 30 minutes before regular opening. Once you’re allowed into the park, position yourself to head toward Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Safaris should generally be your first priority, followed by Expedition Everest or Na’vi River Journey, depending on your group’s interests and the current waits.
If you want to experience Flight of Passage, consider purchasing Lightning Lane Single Pass or saving it for later in the day, when waits often begin decreasing as guests leave Animal Kingdom.
And if your group is more interested in animal encounters than rides, don’t forget to account for the opening times of the animal trails, Wildlife Express Train, and other activities when building your plan.
A Final Word About Rope Drop
Animal Kingdom is the rare Disney park where you can make a smart choice about not getting up quite so early. If you’re planning to ride Flight of Passage, rope drop can be enormously valuable. But if you’re skipping it, you have much more flexibility than you might expect.
The biggest opportunity here isn’t necessarily squeezing in as many rides as possible. It’s getting through the handful of attractions that develop substantial waits early enough that you can spend the rest of your day enjoying what makes Animal Kingdom different.
If you want help balancing those priorities, a customized Touring Plan and the Lines app can help you make the most of your time.
After all, there’s a lot more to Animal Kingdom than waiting in line for rides. And with a smart rope drop strategy, you’ll actually have time to enjoy it!
