EPCOT Rope Drop Guide
A good rope drop strategy can save you hours of waiting at EPCOT. And with some of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World spread across a very large park, making the right decisions early in the day can have an especially big payoff.
But at EPCOT, there’s a complication that doesn’t exist at the other Disney World theme parks: there are two different entrances, and which one you use can completely change your rope drop strategy. Guests entering through the International Gateway have a big advantage when heading to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, while guests arriving at the Main Entrance are better positioned for attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Test Track.

And that’s before we even start thinking about Early Entry, security, transportation, or which attractions will have the longest waits later in the day! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about rope dropping EPCOT, including how early to arrive, which attractions to prioritize, and how to make the most of the first couple of hours in the park. A smart approach to your EPCOT morning can save you up to three hours of waiting compared to wandering around without a plan!
Keep in mind, these are not touring plans. They are tips and strategies to make the most of your morning. You can create and optimize a custom touring plan for your specific date(s) and priorities if you want even more precision!

Getting to EPCOT: Transportation and Arrival Timing
Unlike the other Walt Disney World theme parks, EPCOT has two entrances: the Main Entrance at the front of the park, near Spaceship Earth, and the International Gateway at the back of the park, between the United Kingdom and France pavilions. And because EPCOT is such a large park, which entrance you use can have a significant impact on your morning.
The Main Entrance is where you’ll arrive if you’re driving, taking a Disney bus, using the monorail, or arriving by rideshare. This puts you closest to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, and Soarin’.

The International Gateway is used by guests arriving on the Disney Skyliner, Friendship Boats, or walking from the nearby EPCOT-area resorts. This includes guests staying at the BoardWalk, Yacht Club, Beach Club, Swan, Dolphin, and Swan Reserve, along with resorts connected to the Skyliner. The International Gateway puts you right next to the France pavilion, which makes it the ideal entrance for rope dropping Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. You’ll also have relatively convenient access to Frozen Ever After in Norway.
If you’re staying at a resort with access to the International Gateway, that’s generally going to be your easiest entrance. But if you’re hoping to rope drop Guardians or Test Track, don’t worry. You can still have a successful rope drop from the back of the park. You’ll just have a longer walk and you’ll be behind some guests from the Main Entrance.

One other transportation consideration: Disney buses can sometimes get guests to EPCOT before the parking lot opens. If you’re staying at a Disney resort and trying to be among the first guests in line at the Main Entrance, taking the bus may give you an advantage over driving.
So when should you arrive? Here are my recommendations:
- If you have Early Entry: Aim to be at your chosen park entrance 45 minutes before Early Entry begins, especially if you’re trying to be near the front of the crowd for one of the biggest headliners.
- If you don’t have Early Entry: Aim to arrive at the park entrance 30 minutes before regular opening.
If you’re driving, allow some extra time to park, walk to security, and reach the entrance. If you’re using the Skyliner or other Disney transportation, check when service begins and plan to use one of the earliest departures.
Those are park entrance arrival times, not the time you should leave your hotel. At EPCOT, especially if you’re trying to rope drop Remy or Guardians, arriving even 10–15 minutes earlier can make a meaningful difference on your spot in line.
Security, Park Entry, and What Happens Before Opening
Security screening happens just outside the tapstiles at both EPCOT entrances. The Main Entrance has more capacity, while the International Gateway has a smaller security area. That means lines at the International Gateway can sometimes move more slowly, particularly if several Skyliner or boat passengers arrive at once.
One small tip that can save you time: keep your bag organized and remove your umbrella or glasses case before walking through security. These items, along with certain electronics, can trigger additional screening, and getting pulled aside for a bag check can cost you valuable rope drop time. Once you’re through security, have your park admission ready. EPCOT generally begins allowing guests through the front gates well before official park opening, although the exact timing can vary.
Unlike at Magic Kingdom, where regular-entry guests can spend some time enjoying Main Street before the rest of the park opens, there isn’t much for guests without Early Entry to do at EPCOT before regular opening. At the Main Entrance, regular-entry guests are held in the area near Spaceship Earth until the park officially opens. At the International Gateway, guests without Early Entry are held near the entrance. You’ll want to get through security and position yourself for your preferred attraction, but don’t expect to spend that waiting time exploring World Showcase.
If you do qualify for Early Entry, you’ll be directed through an additional eligibility checkpoint, where Cast Members verify your hotel eligibility using a linked MagicBand, ticket, or other accepted admission media. The process from there depends on which entrance you’re using.
At the Main Entrance, Early Entry guests are directed to the right of Spaceship Earth for eligibility verification. Once released, guests can proceed toward their chosen attractions, including Guardians of the Galaxy and Test Track. In recent operations, guests have been allowed to reach the attraction queues ahead of the official Early Entry start time rather than waiting at the older secondary holding points.
At the International Gateway, Early Entry guests are directed toward the bridge leading into World Showcase. Recent changes have Cast Members separating guests based on where they’re headed. Guests going to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure line up on the right side of the bridge, while guests heading toward Guardians, Test Track, Frozen Ever After, Soarin’, and other attractions are directed to the left. From there, Cast Members release guests toward their attractions before Early Entry officially begins. The exact release time can vary, so pay attention to their instructions.
The important thing to know is that getting through the entrance gates isn’t the end of the rope drop process. You’ll still need to be in the correct location for your chosen attraction, and you’ll want to move efficiently once you’re allowed through.

Early Entry Rope Drop: Which Attractions Should You Prioritize?
Early Theme Park Entry is available to guests staying at Disney-owned resorts and select other participating hotels. It gives eligible guests access to certain attractions 30 minutes before the park officially opens.
At EPCOT, Early Entry includes all of the park’s biggest headliners, which is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, you have several excellent options for saving time. On the other hand, those attractions are spread across a very large park, and you’re unlikely to fit more than one major headliner into your 30-minute Early Entry window. Your best choice will depend on which entrance you’re using and which attractions are most important to your group.

Biggest Early Entry Time-Savers
Test Track: This is one of the strongest Early Entry choices, especially if you’re entering through the Main Entrance. Test Track is extremely popular, and standby waits can grow quickly once the park opens. Getting through it early can save you a substantial amount of waiting later in the day. There’s one big risk, though: Test Track has a history of operational problems, including delayed openings. If it isn’t running when you’re ready to ride, don’t spend all of your Early Entry time waiting for it to open.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: Guardians is another excellent choice, particularly from the Main Entrance. It consistently has some of EPCOT’s longest waits, and getting in line before regular opening can save considerable time later. Guardians is also a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction, so using Early Entry here can potentially save you some money if you were otherwise planning to purchase access. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that all of its preshows take a lot of time. Even if you’re very first in line, you will use almost all 30 minutes of Early Entry to do this one attraction.
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure: Remy is one of the best rope drop opportunities at EPCOT, but there’s a pretty important qualification: this is really only a recommended first attraction if you’re entering through the International Gateway. Guests using that entrance are already just a short walk from France, which gives them a substantial advantage. If you’re coming from the Main Entrance, you’ll be crossing a large portion of the park while all of the International Gateway guests have already entered the queue.

Secondary Option
Frozen Ever After: Frozen can be an excellent Early Entry option, especially for families with younger kids or anyone who isn’t interested in the biggest thrill rides. But it generally isn’t quite as valuable as starting with Guardians, Test Track, or Remy from the International Gateway. Frozen also has a history of delayed openings, so it’s especially important to have a backup plan.
One important caution: all four of these attractions have experienced morning downtime issues, and some are more reliable than others. Arriving early and waiting for an attraction that doesn’t open on time can eliminate much of the benefit of Early Entry. Keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app and be prepared to change your plans if necessary.
Regular Rope Drop: Your Best Attraction Priorities
If you don’t qualify for Early Entry, you might assume that you’ve already missed your chance to avoid the longest lines at EPCOT. Thankfully, that’s not the case! While guests with Early Entry have a head start, regular park opening still gives you an opportunity to tackle popular attractions before their waits reach their afternoon peaks.

Top Regular Rope Drop Priorities
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: Guardians consistently has some of the longest waits at EPCOT, but those waits are still often at their lowest around park opening. If you don’t have Early Entry and you want to ride Guardians without purchasing Lightning Lane Single Pass, heading there as soon as you’re allowed is a reasonable strategy. Just keep in mind that Early Entry guests will already be in the queue, so don’t expect to walk right on.
Frozen Ever After: Frozen is another strong choice at regular opening, especially if you’re entering from the International Gateway or if you’re prioritizing attractions for younger kids. While some Early Entry guests head directly here, many others are concentrating on Remy, Guardians, or Test Track. That can leave Frozen with relatively manageable waits around regular opening.
Soarin’: This might be the most underrated regular rope drop option at EPCOT. Unlike Guardians, Test Track, and Remy, Soarin’ doesn’t tend to attract the same massive rush of guests at the beginning of Early Entry. Many guests ride it after they’ve finished one of the bigger headliners. As a result, you can often get a very reasonable wait if you arrive around regular opening or during the first hour afterward.

Secondary Option
Meet Mickey & Friends: If the headliner queues already look intimidating, meeting Mickey and his friends in CommuniCore Hall can be an excellent alternative. Character meet-and-greet waits build substantially throughout the day, and knocking this out early can save you time later. It’s also a great choice for families who aren’t prioritizing thrill rides.
There are a couple of important things to keep in mind here. First, regular rope drop doesn’t mean you’re starting from an empty park. At EPCOT, many of the biggest attractions have already been operating during Early Entry. If you’re headed to Guardians or Frozen, you’ll be joining a line that may already contain a substantial number of guests.
Second, just because an attraction has a relatively short wait at opening doesn’t mean you should race across the entire park to reach it. EPCOT involves a lot of walking, and spending 15 minutes getting to an attraction to save 10 minutes in line isn’t necessarily a winning strategy.

What If You’re Entering on the “Wrong” Side of EPCOT?
Here’s where EPCOT’s rope drop strategy gets especially interesting! Let’s say you’re staying at a Skyliner resort, so the International Gateway is your natural entrance. But your absolute top priority is Guardians of the Galaxy or Test Track, both of which are much closer to the Main Entrance. Are you doomed? Not at all!
You won’t be at the very front of the crowd heading to those attractions, because guests entering from the Main Entrance have a shorter walk. But if you arrive early, position yourself correctly, and head directly there when you’re released, you can still get into the queue before many other guests.
In fact, recent TouringPlans team member testing has demonstrated that it’s entirely possible to have a successful Guardians rope drop from the International Gateway. The extra walk doesn’t automatically cancel out the benefit of arriving early.
Now let’s reverse the situation. Suppose you’re entering through the Main Entrance, but you really want to rope drop Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. That’s a much tougher proposition. Guests entering through the International Gateway are already close to the France pavilion, and many of them will be lining up for Remy before you’ve even made it into World Showcase. By the time you walk all the way from the front entrance to France, there’s a good chance that a substantial queue has formed.
If Remy is your highest priority, entering through the International Gateway is a much bigger advantage than using the Main Entrance is for Guardians or Test Track. That doesn’t mean you need to go out of your way to change entrances. In most cases, using the entrance that’s most convenient for your transportation still makes sense. It does mean you should choose your first attraction with that geography in mind.
And if you’re planning to purchase Lightning Lane access for one or more headliners, consider using that purchase to solve the attraction that’s least convenient to rope drop from your entrance.
Staying Ahead of the Crowds: Overall Park Flow
EPCOT has a very different morning crowd pattern than Magic Kingdom. At Magic Kingdom, Early Entry crowds are concentrated in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. At EPCOT, the biggest attractions are distributed across several areas of the park, which means crowds spread out more evenly from the very beginning.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Test Track are major draws for guests entering from the Main Entrance. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure draws large numbers of guests from the International Gateway. Frozen Ever After also attracts a healthy crowd, although it’s frequently a second stop for families who start with Remy. That all creates some interesting opportunities.
Frozen Ever After: If you’re starting at Remy, Frozen is a logical next attraction. It’s a relatively short walk from France to Norway, and families often make that transition after finishing their first ride. But there’s a catch: lots of other families have the same idea! If you can get to Frozen before or shortly after regular park opening, you may still find a reasonable wait. Wait much longer, and those crowds can start to build.
Soarin’: Soarin’ often has a different crowd pattern. Since many guests prioritize Guardians and Test Track first, Soarin’ doesn’t usually attract the same initial surge. That means you can often tackle it within the first hour of regular park opening without encountering the kinds of waits that develop later in the day. This also means that getting to Soarin’ immediately at the start of Early Entry isn’t generally a good use of your time. You may be able to save more total waiting by using Early Entry for a bigger headliner and visiting Soarin’ afterward.
The other big consideration at EPCOT is geography. Because the park is so spread out, it can be tempting to bounce between attractions based on whichever one has the lowest posted wait. But a strategy that looks efficient on paper can involve a surprising amount of walking.
If you’re starting in World Showcase, consider whether you can combine Remy and Frozen before moving toward the front of the park. If you’re starting in World Discovery, consider Guardians and Test Track before making a longer trip to the other side of EPCOT. Of course, operational issues can change everything. Test Track, Frozen, Remy, and Guardians all have the potential to disrupt your plans if they don’t open on time. If your first choice is down, don’t spend your entire morning standing around hoping it will start operating.
The most important lesson here is that EPCOT rewards both good attraction prioritization and smart geographic planning. You’ll get the biggest benefit when you can combine the two.
Putting It All Together: Your EPCOT Rope Drop Game Plan
We’ve covered the attraction priorities, the entrance differences, and how crowds tend to move through EPCOT. So what does that look like when you put it all together? Here are two approaches that make good starting points, depending on whether or not you qualify for Early Entry.
If You Have Early Entry
Arrive at your chosen park entrance 45–60 minutes before Early Entry begins. Once the gates open, complete the eligibility check and position yourself for your first attraction.
If you’re entering from the Main Entrance, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Test Track are your strongest starting points. Choose based on your priorities, whether you’ve purchased any Lightning Lanes, and the operational status of each attraction. If everything else is equal, do Test Track before Guardians because you can get through it quicker and still get to Guardians before the park opens.
If you’re entering from the International Gateway, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is generally your strongest starting point. If Remy isn’t important to your group, you can still head toward Guardians or Test Track, or consider Frozen Ever After.
After your first ride, look at both the current wait times and your location before deciding what to do next. Guests who start at Remy may be able to tackle Frozen before its wait builds substantially. Guests who start at Guardians or Test Track may find that Soarin’ still has a manageable wait, even after doing both of those popular headliners.
The goal is to use Early Entry on an attraction that will save you substantial time later, then take advantage of the fact that not every attraction gets crowded at the same rate.
If You Don’t Have Early Entry
Arrive at your park entrance 30–45 minutes before regular opening. Enter the park when the gates open and get into position for your preferred attraction.
If you’re entering through the Main Entrance, Guardians is a strong first choice if you want to avoid purchasing Lightning Lane Single Pass. Soarin’ is also an excellent option, particularly if you’re looking for something with a more dependable and manageable early wait.
If you’re entering through the International Gateway, consider heading toward Frozen Ever After. Remy may already have a substantial line from Early Entry guests, so don’t assume that the closest attraction is necessarily your best choice.
And if those headliner queues already look intimidating, consider meeting Mickey and his friends or tackling another attraction with shorter waits before the rest of the crowds spread throughout the park.
After your first attraction, use posted waits and current operating conditions to decide where to head next. If you can stay in the same general area of the park rather than zigzagging back and forth across EPCOT, even better.
A Final Word About Rope Drop
At EPCOT, the biggest mistake you can make isn’t necessarily choosing the wrong first attraction. It’s choosing a first attraction that makes no sense for where you’re entering the park. A Remy rope drop strategy that’s perfect for someone walking through the International Gateway can be a terrible plan for someone who’s just stepped off a bus at the Main Entrance.
Pick a priority that works with your entrance, get there early, and have a backup ready in case it doesn’t open on time. Then resist the temptation to chase short posted waits all over the park. EPCOT is enormous, and every extra trek across the park eats into the time you thought you were saving.
If you want help balancing all of those decisions for your specific attraction priorities, build a customized Touring Plan and use the Lines app to re-optimize throughout the day. After all, the goal isn’t to win a race around World Showcase. It’s to leave yourself more time to actually enjoy it!
