Disney in a Minute: What is a Surrey Bike?
We’re here with a series of quick posts, “Disney in a Minute,” bite-sized nuggets of information that can better help you understand a Disney term or planning topic. Enjoy!
Surrey bikes are multi-person pedaled conveyances. They look a bit like a golf cart, but powered by humans rather than a motor. Disney two sizes of surrey bike rentals: one-bench bikes built for two pedalers, two-bench bikes built for four pedalers. Each bench seat of the bike can fit two adult-sized pedalers, plus a child or petite adult and small children may be able to sit in a basket at the front.
Surrey bike rentals are available at the Boardwalk, Saratoga Springs, Old Key West, and Port Orleans resorts at Walt Disney World. There is no requirement that you be staying at a particular resort or even at a Disney hotel to rent a bike. For example, if you’re staying off site but having dinner at a restaurant on the Boardwalk, a surrey rental there can be a fun way to end your evening. You do have to be at least age 18 to rent a surrey and everyone who pedals must be at least four and half feet tall.
Prices can change, but expect to pay about $25 per half hour for a two-seater rental and about $28 for a four-seater rental.
I’ve learned from experience that driving a surrey bike feels different than riding a normal two-wheeler. You have to plan a few seconds ahead and be deliberate with your actions. Additionally, the added weight of the surrey means you’ll need a longer brake time and more leg power than with a standard bike. Take is slowly at first until you get the hang of it.
