Disney Skyliner Now Open Once Again

Following the recent incident that occurred with the Disney Skyliner, which caused the gondola system to be temporarily shut down, the Walt Disney World Resort has shared that the gondola system is now open once again. Beginning today, Guests may travel aboard Disney Skyliner from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The Disney Skyliner had an incident occur back on October 5 that shut down the system, just 6 days after officially opening. Images at the time showed that several gondolas that had crashed into each other at the Riviera Station on the Epcot line. That evening, some guests were evacuated, while others were able to exit to the station as the gondolas resumed operation temporarily to clear the line. Some guests reported that they had been in the gondolas for several hours and they were instructed to open the emergency kits that were found inside the cabins.

To make sure these kinds of incidents don’t occur, Disney has completely reviewed the system with the manufacturer, as well as made adjustments to not only processes and training, but also with communication to Guests who are onboard the Disney Skyliner in these kinds of incidents.

There will be a few system updates that will occur later this week that will result in the following modified operating hours:

  • October 16: The Disney Hollywood Studios line will be closed while the other two lines will be available from 1:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 17-18: All lines will be open from 1:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

As someone who has actually ridden the Disney Skyliner, do keep in mind that the cabins may slow or come to some stops during your ride. This happens most of the time when Guests need to be accommodated who require additional time to load their cabin.

We will keep you posted on any further information about any additional updates that may need to occur or changes to operating hours.

  • Question: If it runs from 8am, does that mean that it’s not an option for morning 8am extra magic hours? Or do they run earlier whwn EMH are happening? Thanks!

  • The truth of the matter is not matter if the transportation or ride is new or very old, there will always be mechanical problems some time during operations. This is just the nature of the beast. Disney does NOT need these problems any more than you want them and you can bet it costs them a fortune when thing like this happen. Of coarse the choice is always your on the type of transportation or ride you wish to take. If it had been me stranded on the Skyliner I would have been none too happy myself, but I do realize that in taking the Skyliner especially as new as it is that there can be problems and Disney can only test so much and then hope for the best.

  • I thought the cabins were easily detached when people need extra time to board. Do you know why that isn’t happening? It would be lovely to have one transportation system at WDW that reliably picks up people and gets where it’s going in a timely manner.

    • They do…the Minnie Vans do an excellent job at that, and the drivers are very friendly and pleasant. So well in fact, that I think they must have hired Chick-fil-a to run that service. And the Friendship Boats have always operated pretty efficiently.

      • Good point. I should have clarified that I would like more reliability in the included transportation to places that you cannot otherwise just walk to. The buses and monorail aren’t awful, usually, but you really do have to plan ahead just in case there is an issue. I suppose that’s just life in general. With the prices we pay for these resorts (and the increased prices for the gondola resorts), it would be lovely to have something less likely to come with delays. I thought that’s what we were getting. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s a bit disappointing that this doesn’t seem to be the case here.

      • For a MiniVan it’s average 35 dollars for each trip on property. Yeah…they’d better be friendly. Heck, they should have a snack and drinks.
