• My main concern has more to do with the Auctioneer’s voice, will it be totally replaced? I hope they can keep it mostly sounding the same

  • Yes, but women are sold into sexual slavery every day in the real world. So, you know, it’s not necessarily super funny.

      Meanwhile, a few seconds later, a group of men are in danger of burning to death. Earlier on the same ride, we saw a group of men who slaughtered each other over treasure. Oh, and people firing cannons at one another.

      Oh, and Captain Jack letting an innocent man be tortured rather than turn himself in.

• I wouldn’t have been too broken up if they never changed the scene, but I’m okay with the changes they’re describing. For all the complaining I’ve been seeing about “PC BS,” this seems like a business decision to me. Yes, Disney probably doesn’t like the optics of a human trafficking scene anymore, but how many times have complaints and boycotts directed at them fallen on deaf ears? Would they really capitulate now when the scene has been intact from decades? No, as friends of mine have pointed out, this feels like a business decision, a way to welcome girls into the Pirates fandom and maybe a break from their past philosophy of total market segregation. I have no doubt they have a ton of Pirate Redhead merch just waiting to flood the shops once the refurbishment is done. It’s also a great way to maintain a beloved animatronic figure while paying tribute to the female pirates of both history and the Pirates film franchise.

  Disney changes all the time, for good or ill. This feels like a good one, and hardly cause for cursing their name as I did when they redid Journey Into Imagination or closed the Adventurer’s Club.

  • Thankfully, I already have my “We Wants the Redhead” pin.

• I like this scene as it is.

  I’m reminded of Carrie Fisher’s response to criticism about the slave scene in Star Wars: The father who flipped out about it: “What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?” Carrie Fisher: “Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.”

  These women in the POTC scene? They do what Princess Leia did. Wait until the moment is right, then kick (rhymes with bass). Doesn’t anyone remember the very next scene? The one where the would‐be subjugators are running scared? I look at this and see female empowerment. I’m happy to take my daughter on this ride and laugh with her when we see exactly what the pirates have brought upon themselves in their ignorance and arrogance.

  I’ll be sad to see it replaced with something mundane.

  • Except that that isn’t the way the scene played in the original version—the women never go the upper hand in this ride until the ’90s “PC revamp” allowed them to. This is just another step in the direction of decency.

• This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of. Isn’t a women pirate even more disreputable than a man back in those days. How do you think they became pirates? Murdering, burning and plundering cities. Also I wouldn’t say the red head seems very upset by it since she was already in a disreputable business according to the way she was dressed. Aren’t we just exchanging her from before she was sold to after she was sold and became a pirate?

• I’m surpisingly okay with this change. I usually against making major changes to classic rides, but given it’s a scene that shows women being sold as “wives” in a weirdly light-hearted tone I’m a bit amazed it’s lasted this long as is. I’ll be a little bummed to see the change, but can’t bring myself to be upset about it.

• That is great news! I look forward to seeing the updated scene. I also liked when Jasmine’s costume became more covered-up… now if we can only get the Carrousel of Progress to move away from the lyrics saying “man has a dream” and make it gender-neutral.

  • I think in this instance “man” is gender neutral. It means “mankind,” which covers everyone.

  • It’s English — “man” *is* “gender-neutral”.

• I’m generally one for keeping the original versions intact, but I’m okay with this change.

  • I’m kinda the opposite. I’m pretty for changing things when they’re offensive, and I understand that this might be, but it’s maybe my favorite scene in the ride. I’m definitely bummed.

    • I agree this scene doesn’t seem to have any humor in it. It’s seem kind of depressing seeing the people dragging their belonging to the Auction.
      At least make it fun.
