Ask It: Best Extra Magic Hour

At Walt Disney World, Extra Magic Hours are those perks for  guests staying at a Disney hotel that give you extra time in a select theme park on a select day. Typically, Extra Magic Hours means that with a simple scan of your MagicBand to confirm you are staying at a Disney hotel, you can get into the Morning Extra Magic Hour park one hour early, or you have the ability to stay at the Evening Extra Magic Hour park up to two hours after the official park closing. By taking advantage of Extra Magic Hours, you can have much lower wait times for many popular attractions. But which of the Extra Magic Hours do you prefer? This week’s question is:

Which Walt Disney World Extra Magic Hours do you prefer to take advantage of?

  • Morning EMH (55%, 320 Votes)
  • Evening EMH (45%, 257 Votes)

Total Voters: 577

This is a tough one! I went with evening purely because I love the parks at night, and any extra time I get to spend at WDW in the dark is all right by me.

I think you get the most bang for your buck by using the morning EMH. With the exception of MK, usually the lines for the attractions that are open for evening EMH are long so you can’t get as much done. Just my experience here. I agree that the parks at night are preferred as opposed to visiting in the day but I can enjoy the nighttime atmosphere as I slowly stroll out of the park at regular park closing.

I voted for evening because I love those extra hours in the park. I love watching others leave while we run from ride to ride. I do think you do better getting on to headliners in morning EMH, but there is nothing better than being there as the park empties and the lines go down.

On my own, I would choose evening hours – the parks are beautiful at night, and you don’t usually have to fight extreme heat. But if I am touring with my children or a group, I think morning hours are best. You are better able to take advantage of short lines in the morning, and my kids are still too young to be able to last long in to the night.

I’ve turned my kids into night owls!!! Especially if they can still nap, they can totally last into the night! The heat goes away, the crowds go away… so awesome! Use your fastpasses for the headliners during crowds and then all the rest at night! We found out the hard way that not everything is available/open at EMH and haven’t had as many issues at night. I LOVE realizing that they are scanning magicbands because EMH have kicked in! Whoohoo!

To clarify, meant morning hours do not have everything operating and have had few issues with that at night!

For us it is EMH all the way! Since we come from Idaho rope drop is a struggle and anything earlier is a total no-go. My teenagers and I have no problems staying up late and taking advantage of smaller crowds and the beauty of the parks at night.

We’ve always loved the morning EMH, since the kiddos in each generation of our fam were/are early risers. Orlando in the early morning is lovely, even during hot august and september months. We’v always taken midday breaks for pooltime, not usually naps, so a regular evening schedule works fine for us.
