Classic Disney Souvenir: The Snow Globe
When you think about classic souvenirs, one of the first things that might pop into your mind is a snow globe. The typical snow globe is a water-filled dome with glitter added so that when you agitate the water the glitter drifts down to appear as snow falling on an image or object inside the dome. Some of the first snow globes produced were designed to commemorate the opening of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and that “snow on a landmark” ethos has persisted for more than a century.
It’s not surprising then, that Disney offers an array of snow globes for every budget. The most basic models are plastic, with a cutout plastic image inside. These currently retail for $14.99 in the park gift shops.
Some higher quality globes retail for $34.99. These have more elaborate decorations and a solid base.
The next level snow globe readily available in the parks costs $39.99. These globes have a music box in the base. Wind them up to hear about two minutes of music from the attraction depicted in the globe.
Still more expensive are the $54.95 globes. These are similar to the music boxes, but are larger and heavier.
Most in-park snow globe sales points have a nearby travel advisory posted. “Ask a cast member about packing or available shipping when purchasing your snow globe. As a reminder, the Department of Homeland Security does not allow liquids or gels, including snow globes, through the security screening point or in the cabin of the aircraft.” This warning is real. If you’re flying home and want to buy a snow globe, be prepared to have it shipped for you or to place it in checked luggage (at your own risk) rather your carry-on.

My snow globe story. In the mid 90’s (It was the same year as the first “snowfall” on Main st.), my wife and I went to a Christmas show at the convention center at the Contemporary Resort. As we were waiting to be taken to our seats our hostess said your will love these seats. During the show “Father Christmas” came out to the audience and came up to our table where another family with an 8 year girl was sitting and told here a story (big spotlights beamed onto the table) and then presented her with a beautiful snow globe as a present.
It so happened that the family was staying at the same resort as us and as we got on the bus to head back to the resort, the little girl dropped the snowglobe and it was smashed to pieces. My wife thought “oh no, poor little girl.” But before the girl even sat in her seat a cast member brought her a new one. There was no way Disney was going to send someone away unhappy.
I love that. Classic Disney magic!
