Disney in a Minute: What is Dooney & Bourke?
We’re here with a series of quick posts, “Disney in a Minute,” bite-sized nuggets of information that can better help you understand a Disney term or planning topic. Enjoy!
Dooney & Bourke is a brand of handbags and small leather goods that has been around since 1975. The reason is this is relevant here is that in 2009 they entered into a partnership with Disney to create bags with themed designs (affectionately called “Disney Dooneys”). The first design, the “Sketch” pictured above, became a coveted item, with guests waiting in line at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World (there were versions for each). Some buyers spent significant time searching for bags with a specific placement of design elements. For example, with Mickey or the castle in the center of the bag, or with the castle fully rendered and not cut off as in the photo above.
There are now dozens of different themed Dooney designs available for purchase in the theme parks and on shopDisney.com. Patterns vary frequently, though the original Sketch remains. Designs have included EPCOT festivals, holidays, theme park attractions, Disney Cruise Line, runDisney races, and Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars films. Some we’ve found recently include those pictured below (click on the image to enlarge). In addition to different patterns, note the varying size and shapes of the bags.
You can find Disney Dooney wallets, cross-body bags, purses, backpacks, wristlets, totes of many sizes, and occasionally luggage, though not every design will be in every size bag. Dooney & Bourke bags are not considered luxury items, though that may shock buyers not used to purchasing mid-level handbags. Expect to pay a minimum of $250 for most items, with the largest bags approaching $500. If you’re looking for Disney-themed bags at a lower price point, try Loungefly items.
