NEWS! Construction Begins on Walkway to the Grand Floridian

Construction has begun on a walkway and bridge that will connect the Grand Floridian and the Magic Kingdom for foot traffic. Though the Grand Floridian is more posh, and more expensive, than its neighbor, the Contemporary, it has long lacked one key amenity the Contemporary had — the ability to walk to the Magic Kingdom.

Sure the monorail is great, but sometimes it’s crowded or the lines are long. And if you’re leaving the Magic Kingdom to go back to the hotel, it can take a while to circle through the entire monorail resort loop.

The addition of a Grand Floridian to Magic Kingdom walkway could easy chop ten minutes off every return trip, particularly for guests staying in the buildings closer to the park.

Are you looking forward to this new addition?

  • Do we have any idea when this will be completed? Do you think it might be ready in November?

  • You can already walk all the way from the Magic Kingdom to the T.T.C. I know this first hand because once we were in the park when it closed at 3:00 AM, and the buses and boats had stopped running, and there was a monorail breakdown. A cast member told us that it was a “ten minute walk” to the TTC from the Magic Kingdom and told us how to get there. We thought about calling a taxi, and I was skeptical about the whole “ten minute” thing, but we decided to walk. It was more like 45 minutes and it took some doing to pick our way through the Poly and Grand Floridian mazes in the dark, but we got there. We slept well THAT night.

    • There’s no way you could have gone through the GF unless you went via a cast-member-only bridge, via Caribbean Way behind Big Thunder Mt.. I imagine it’s possible a CM let you through? One could walk World Drive via the Contemporary, but it requires walking on or next to the road, and I don’t think Disney allows that. It’s probably a 20-30 minute walk, but if you did indeed go via the back of Big Thunder Mountain it would indeed be 45 minutes or so.

  • Since the Grand is our home DVC resort, we are thrilled with this option.

  • So cool! I’m delighted that they are finally doing this. I loved having the option to walk to and from the Contemporary, but really didn’t care for the resort.
