What Is Your Most Only-On-Vacation Food at Walt Disney World?

What do you ONLY eat on vacation?

There are plenty of iconic foods that many people immediately associate with Walt Disney World: Dole Whip, popcorn, Mickey Bars, and so on. But even as associated as those things are with the theme parks, there are close cognates of these items that you might eat at home. For example, you probably have popcorn at the movies and might have a soft serve or ice cream on a stick at any number of parlors in your home.

What I’m after are your thoughts on food items that are so extreme that you would only eat it when you’re away from home, splurging on vacation. Maybe your vacation-only food is more expensive, or messier, or more caloric than what you normally eat, so even if you love it, it’s relegated to vacation eating.

Some possible contenders for the “most vacation” food might include:

The Kitchen Sink at Beaches & Cream. You might eat ice cream at home, but you’re probably not eating THIS ice cream at home.
Chocolate Extreme Shake at the Plaza in the Magic Kingdom.
This Magic Kingdom donut is bigger than your head.
A hunk of bacon on a stick.
Giant turkey leg.
Loaded chocolate and caramel apples.
Specialty hot dogs from Casey’s Corner.

Any of these might qualify as foods that you’d only consume in the comfortable oblivion of a theme park.

The most only-on-vacation food I’ve eaten at Walt Disney World in the past several years is this over-the-top monstrosity: The Creamy Bacon Macaroni & Cheese Tots from The Friar’s Nook at Magic Kingdom ($10.99). I mean seriously! Extra creamy mac & cheese might get eaten at home. Loaded tots might get eaten at home. But this is loaded tots topping a hefty bowl of extra creamy mac & cheese! I defy you to find a human that would eat this dish anywhere but on vacation. (That’s not actually a dare; I’m being rhetorical. Do not find me this person.)

So tell me, what’s your most only-on-vacation thing that you’ve eaten at Disney World? Why is it an only-on-vacation food? Did you enjoy it? Let us know in the comments.

  • Epcot Germany’s CARAMEL CORN! I’ve tired to make it with a werthers recipe, but just not the same as warm and fresh there!

    • Amy, how did I forget to mention this in my previous comment?! This popcorn is my absolute favorite snack at Epcot, and I can’t believe I left it out. I’m a huge popcorn fan, but this caramel popcorn takes the cake. If I ever try other caramel popcorn elsewhere, my husband always says,”What’s the point? It’s just going to make you miss the popcorn from Germany” and he is absolutely right. It’s the best and I always try to make it last as long as I can!

      • Yes! The caramel corn in Germany!

  • I’ve definitely indulged in the giant donuts at Lard Lad over in Universal and, as a solo traveler, couldn’t finish mine at one I go – I had to take the rest back to my hotel room for a later breakfast. I have a feeling I’ll be repeating history with the new giant Mickey donuts. That’s probably the most outrageously decadent thing I’ve eaten at the parks, since I don’t go in for the giant milkshakes with frosting and cake and everything and I don’t like the experience of trying to eat those turkey legs, but I never make a trip to Disney or Universal without indulging in plenty of Dole Whip Floats and frosty butterbeers, respectively.

The bacon on a stick and the mac and cheese tots are calling out to me, though, so maybe I’ll be adding some new decadence when I go again next month.

  • I’m old school, & don’t go to Disney all that often. But my 2 MUST haves:
    Dole Whip float
    Chocolate-covered frozen banana
(I don’t even *like* bananas, but frozen, covered in chocolate & nuts? Sign me up!)

  • On our recent trip I was simply looking to get a bottle of water at the Cheshire Cafe when my eyes came upon the giant Mickey celebration donut. Needless to say it was ordered immediately and enjoyed immensely by our family of 4.

  • My husband and I HAVE to have the Sweet & Spicy Chicken Waffle Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow in MK! We haven’t found a sandwich that compares to it at home. Also, I love getting the Olaf Strawberry Lemonade popsicle….can’t find anything like it at home either!

    • If you like the chicken and waffle sandwich at Sleepy Hollow, you may want to check out the fried chicken and donuts plate at Homecomin’ at Disney Springs. Delish!!

  • I’m a huge ice cream eater and had several chances on our last trip to eat huge portions including the Kitchen Sink. I really tried to finish what my family could not, and we couldn’t make the trip back to the condo without pulling the car over so I wouldn’t make a mess of the inside.

Other favorite ice cream concoctions were the double chocolate ice cream sandwich at Tamu Tamu in AK (I had a lot of people ask me where I got it) and the Treasure Island Warm Brownie Sundae at Ghiradelli at Disney Springs.

But the biggest surprise was how much I liked the carrot cake cookie from Trolley Car Cafe at HS. Huge snack, and at $3.99, relatively inexpensive. Had to go back to HS a second day just to get another one!

  • Where can I get the hunk of bacon on a stick? Cause I want it. Looks like MK on the riverboat route.
