The Walt Disney Company Plans To Reduce Single-Use Plastic Waste
The Walt Disney Company has announced that by mid-2019, they will eliminate single-use plastic straws and plastic stirrers at all owned and operated locations found across the globe. This will amount to a reduction of more than 175 million straws and 13 million stirrers annually. This has been recently noticed by those on the Disney Cruise Line, as efforts have already been made aboard the ships to help cut down on unnecessary waste.
In addition, over the next few years Disney will be transitioning to refillable in-room amenities in our hotels and on our cruise ships, (now we can officially say goodbye to the shampoo and conditioner bottles in the room) and according to Disney, there will be a reduction of plastics in guest rooms by 80%.
More efforts will include offering Guests the options to purchase reusable bags at a nominal price, instead of receiving a plastic shopping bags. Disney is also going to continually make the efforts towards recycling and responsibly disposing single-use waste that cannot be eliminated. Finally, the company will take efforts to fully eliminate polystyrene cups.
“Eliminating plastic straws and other plastic items are meaningful steps in our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products. “These new global efforts help reduce our environmental footprint, and advance our long-term sustainability goals.”

They’re ditching the plastics that they give out for free (straws, shampoo bottles, plastic shopping bags) but not the ones they sell (balloons within balloons). What a profitable way to express their concern for the environment.
Color me Grumpy. We only stay on site for the H2O shampoo and soap! 😉
The “Everybody neat and pretty?” bottles from the ’90s will always be the One True Disney Shampoo to me. But time marches on.
