Full bar specializing in rum, and lunch and dinner selections.

Summary

The focus of the menu is rum, rum-based drinks, and food from the Caribbean islands. The rums are organized by the nationality of the island inhabitants: Spanish, French, British, "Mainland" (Central and South America), U.S, and various international labels. Most prices range from $9 to $12 per glass for rum, $12 to $15 for mixed drinks. Rum "flights" are also available, allowing you to choose 3 rums from any area, for around $18 (essentially a buy-2-get-1-free deal).

The food at Strong Water is significantly better than we expected at a mid-priced Universal hotel. The ceviches are outstanding, and come in varieties such as Cuban, Mexican, Peruvian, and "Caribbean." We also enjoyed the Mexican fish tacos, and the roasted pork from Puerto Rico.

We're told that all of the food is prepared from fresh ingredients, when you order it. That's definitely evident in the quality.

Tapas prices range from $9 to $16, with most around $10. The feedback that we've read on Strong Water seems to indicate those are high prices for the amount of food you receive. We don't think that criticism takes in to account the quality of the food, however. In a region where it's common to pay $10 for a counter-service cheeseburger, Strong Water's food is good enough to support those prices.

Setting and Atmosphere

We think the interior looks like an industrialized, Caribbean-themed rum factory. Strong Water has dark floors, a huge (but relatively unobtrusive) television at one end, and a gigantic, inviting outdoor patio space. You can tell it's designed for convention parties, but it manages to balance those occasional events in a scale that also works for late-night drinks for two.
