Walt Disney World Resort, Disney Springs, The Landing

Summary

"Industrial gothic" venue for American food and out-of-the-ordinary entertainment, bringing "living history" to guests.

Guests arriving after 10:00 p.m. must be age 21 or older and are subject to a dress code (no caps, sleveless shirts, or flip-flops).

Reservations are available via OpenTable on The Edison's website and through Disney's website.

Setting and Atmosphere

A 1920s electric company (the original California location is in the building of a former power station) with high ceilings and themed rooms zones. There are clips of black and white movies projected onto some of the walls. Combined with the steampunk esthetic and the abundance of gear imagery, the place has an overall Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times vibe. During the evening dinner service, there are strolling entertainers that stop by each table and give small science demonstrations and crack science jokes. This is way less weird than the description seems. We had a blast bantering with science guy Rory as he demonstrated circuit completion with colorful lights. Be forewarned that the atmosphere changes pretty substantially from "restaurant" to "bar" at 9:00 p.m. on the dot. At exactly nine, we went from being able to have comfortable dinner table conversation with our companions at a table for four, to being completely unable to hear each other because they switched on blaring rock music. If you want to enjoy a relaxing chat, time it so you're done early.

House Specialties

The "bacon clothesline" is the signature appetizer. Picture four pieces of heavily-smoked candied bacon and a few sprigs of rosemary clipped to a suspended string with clothespins. It's a near Instagram imperative, and that may be the entire point, but we couldn't figure out what it had to do with the restaurant's theme other than that it seemed generically old fashioned. Similarly, the "Dancin' Corn Dog" seems primarily there to have its picture taken. The main courses are American comfort food: fried chicken, steak, meatloaf, and burgers. We like the offerings well enough, but the prices are on the high side. The "organic tomato soup and gooey grilled cheese" is delicious, but at $20 a serving, we found ourselves thinking that a bowl of Campbell's is pretty good too. The dessert headliner is the "Lollipop Tree" (a tree-shaped rack with a dozen cheesecake pops, served with bubblegum whipped cream). The cheescake pops were yum, but all together they amounted to about the quantity of dessert in a standard offering from The Cheesecake Factory, and at $18.00, it's twice the price. And the less said about the bubblegum whipped cream the better.

Other Recommendations

Drinks are where the Edison shines. The bar menu is extensive. In addition to signature cocktails like the "City of Light" (tanqueray 10 gin, angostura bitters, lime, and cucumber soda) and the Time Turner (cruzan white rum, campari, lime, pineapple, and orgeat), there are 10 draught beers and over two dozen bottled and canned beers and ciders. There are also substantial wine offerings by the bottle and glass, as well as 19 types of vodka and almost as many varieties of tequila, gin, whisky, scotch, and rum.
