Disney in a Minute: What is a Spirit Jersey?
We’re here with a series of quick posts, “Disney in a Minute,” bite-sized nuggets of information that can better help you understand a Disney term or planning topic. Enjoy!
Disney has a reliable body of merchandise that appears in regular rotation in theme park shops and shopDisney.com. These include things like mugs, hats, Loungefly backpacks, and Spirit Jerseys. Spirit Jerseys are not unique to Disney, the “spirit” part of the name is a nod to their roots in the cheerleading world. You can find Spirit Jerseys emblazoned with logos of universities, sports teams, and many non-Disney pop culture brands, but their ubiquity in the parks may make them feel like a Disney-specific product. In truth, the manufacturer has been around for 30 years, but their partnership with Disney began in 2017.
The standard Spirit Jersey is made of heavyweight cotton – more hefty than a typical tee shirt, but not as weighty as a sweatshirt. During the winter, you may find Spirit Jersey made of fluffy, velour-like fabic, or a faux hand-knitted design, but the vast majority are of the cotton variety. While women are more likely to wear Spirit Jerseys, the shirts are meant to be unisex and modest subset of men wear them too. They also make versions for children and sometimes for pets.
The hallmark of Spirit Jerseys are their oversized fit and their bold design. The boxy shape flatters no one and thus is perfect for everyone; they’re not unlike Crocs shoes in this regard. Colors and patterns change often. Expect to find new versions seasonally as well themed to promote new Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars films, new rides, or other events.
Prices vary depending on the design, but they’re usually priced near the midpoint of the $75-100 range. Click into the gallery below to see several examples.
