Heads Up, Disneyland’s Main Street Is Under Heavy Construction
If you’re heading to Disneyland in the next few months you should know of several closures that will affect your visit. Multiple rides are closed and under lengthy refurbishments, such as Splash Mountain in Disneyland, and most of Paradise Pier in DCA (check our Disneyland Resort Refurbishments page for the exact closing and opening dates). Main Street, U.S.A. is under heavy construction as its horse-drawn street car tracks are being replaced. Take a look at the pictures below to get an idea of the scale of the construction that is happening.
As soon as you walk in to Disneyland’s town square you’ll notice construction walls. The entire area around the flag pole is blocked off.
Disney announced that new brickwork will be installed along with the new trolley track. From the official Disney Parks Blog: “For the first time, the horse-drawn streetcar track on Main Street, U.S.A., will be replaced in its entirety.”
The construction walls extend to near the front of the City Hall and Opera House buildings on either side.
The Main Street Vehicles, including the greatest Disney ride ever built, the Omnibus, are not running during the construction on Main Street. The firetruck is available for pictures at certain times during the day. 
As you can see, there’s not much room to move around.
Construction has not yet started in the middle portion of Main Street.
The portion of the street in front of Main Street Cinema is open and free of construction walls all the way up to Refreshment Corner.
Heading up Main Street, you can see that the hub is also surrounded by construction walls. This means you’ll have to hold off on taking pictures with the Partners statue.
The construction walls take up about half of the street. Thankfully there’s still plenty of room to take pictures in front of the castle.
Also, there’s still plenty of room for the Disneyland Band.
Disney has not confirmed a date for when construction is scheduled to wrap up. But we have heard the Main Street Vehicles will be up and running on Thursday, March 15.

For all of you AP holders (I was one for 8 years), your complaints (even though they’re understandable) just show that you’re only thinking of yourselves instead of the beautification of Disneyland and the enjoyment of ALL people. Those are the ORIGINAL tracks and even though you may not realize, A LOT of people (including performers in parades) trip on those tracks. Once the tracks are replaced, I assume that they’ll look a lot like the tracks at DCA. As for PPP, I don’t like that they’re changing it to Pixar Pier but as Walt Disney said “Disneyland will never be completed”. Please ry to understand all perspectives instead of just your own.
There’s only 4 comments out of 14 on this post that are even complaining. Only 1 of them even mention being a former AP. I think it’s a valid complaint for vacationers/infrequent visitors to have, especially since the construction was so sudden.
So let’s see. The trolley tracks have been in service since opening day. That’s 62 years, 5 months, 26 days. If they’re down until March 15, that’s 8 weeks and 6 days. So, the track will be down approximately 1 day per year since installation. That’s 99.72% uptime.
Not gonna lie, I’m also disappointed… It needed to be done, for sure, and this really is the best time of year for it. But, along with the others expressing dissatisfaction, it would have been nice to know further in advance (like with the ride closures) so I could have tried to plan my trip around it if possible- or at least not get blindsided by it. At about two weeks out, travel plans are set in stone. :\
What about fireworks shows? Are those cancelled until construction is over same as parades? Do we know when this began? Sad face. Inconvenient, but won’t stop me from going.
Boo. Hiss. Did my homework. Looked for closures before choosing date. This wasn’t mentioned. This is a big inconvenience. We don’t live close, so always plan around closures. Aren’t rich, so then there’s the cost factor. We certainly will not be getting what we paid for. The view is ruined and can’t move around. What a HUGE disappointment!
I’m really disappointed as well. This was not in the plan when I was diligently planning ahead.
Jesus, all these complaints. I’m sure happy they’ll be replacing the tracks, hopefully with a better design. DO you know how many people I’ve personally witnessed trip in those? My boyfriend helped an old man up who tumbled to the ground when he stepped in the tracks. I think we can suffer some crowds and sacrifice our precious photos for the sake of other’s safety. Suck it up, people.
Well that’s just a fine how do you do punch in the face and kick in the balls after I purchased Disney After Dark Tickets last year and the event is going go happen on Thursday Jan. 18, 2018 and all these construction and closures. Does not sound appealing at all.. the whole 50s nostalgia picturesque theme is down the hill.. unless they’re going for when they first opened theme.. haha.. Thanks Disney…. refund please.. haha.
On the same website your purchased your tickets, disney also posts when and where all closures will be for about a year, that’s your fault you didn’t do your research.
Disney announced this particular construction on January 5th, 2018. Not one year.
Will the parades be going while main Street is blocked off like this?
There’s are no parades scheduled during the construction period.
Thank God my pass expired because for the money that I paid for 4 passes, I would be upset with the construction and closures. Disneyland makes enough money to pay workers to have the work done in the shortest amount of time possible!
Lol, surely they are not prolonging this intentionally. It can’t be done overnight even with a thousand people working on it. You are the reason people get hurt. You complain about things like this even though they are *necessary* just like a roof replacement on a house, in order to keep people safe. If Disney weren’t doing this and someone were injured on a ride, you’d be the first to complain that Disney should have done repairs on the ride. I guess some people just can’t be pleased.
