The Sorcerer’s Hat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to be Removed
All day, I’ve been seeing the rumors, but it now appears to be official! The iconic Sorcerer’s Hat at the end of Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Chinese Theatre at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is being removed.
The Sorcerer’s Hat was introduced into the park in 2001 as a part of the “100 Years of Magic” celebration, which honored Walt Disney’s 100th birthday and was initially supposed to be temporary. According to Disney, the hat was built as a representation of the magic of show business and the entertainment wizardry of Disney that is captured throughout shows and attractions at the park.
Not a lot of news has been released about the removal, but it certainly appears that big changes are on tap for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with multiple attractions closing over the past few months. Just today, it was announced that The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow is also closing.
Disney has not announced a date for the removal of the Sorcerer’s Hat; however, rumors are indicating that work will begin sometime in early 2015 (likely January).

I feel like we’ve all won some epic battle! Goodbye, stupid hat!
Hmmm…. it’s like taking out a trademark though. MK has Cinderella’s castle. Epcot has the mission earth golf ball. AK has the Tree of Life. DHWS will need a new central symbol to represent the park.

Yeah, but they’re not exactly iconic, are they? They’ll never be the big thing you notice.
I propose a big HOLLYWOOD sign, but with mouse ears on the O’s.
The only thing I’m sad about is that I won’t get to dance on its grave since I’m sure it’ll be moved instead of tossed into the landfill with the Epcot wand. I am so excited for my favorite park to FINALLY be getting some love.
It’s a wonderful icon in the worst possible place. Outside the gates would be fine, or in some newly-themed area of the park once the makeover kicks into full gear. One can only hope this gate will get the attention it desperately needs to reach its potential once again.
I’m in the minority and like that hat, however I’m looking forward to a reimagined Studios park. Fingers crossed it’s half Pixar (with Carsland) and half Star Wars. They need to update Fantasmic too. The only potential change I’m dreading is the removal of Aerosmith from Rock and Roller Coaster, the idea of the attraction with some sappy Disney act is baaad.
I hope they make some official announcements soon about upcoming plans for the park. I also wonder how many 1-day tickets are going to be sold for DHS when AK and Epcot will have much more to offer for the same price — at least for now. Here’s hoping that there’s a master plan out there that will get people excited for the future of this park.
Agreed re: wanting announcements, what big changes are due at Epcot? They need to sort Universe of Energy and obv. Wonders of Life IMO but wasn’t aware anything much (apart from a Frozen Maelstrom) was public.
