You’re going on vacation to Walt Disney World! The only problem? You’re not sure which attractions are right for you and your kiddos and you have questions. Which attractions are too intense for little ones? What rides do I really need a FastPass+ reservation for? What’s the disability access like for certain attractions? We’re answering all those questions and more in our Everything You Need to Know attraction series with today’s focus on Mickey’s PhilharMagic at the Magic Kingdom!

What is Mickey’s PhilharMagic?

Mickey’s PhilharMagic is a family-friendly 3D show where guests follow Donald Duck through musical numbers from classic animated Disney films!

Where is Mickey’s PhilharMagic?

Mickey’s PhilharMagic is located between Peter Pan’s Flight and Cinderella Castle in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom.

What is the History of Mickey’s PhilharMagic?

Mickey’s PhilharMagic’s theater was first home to the Mickey Mouse Revue, an opening day attraction at the Magic Kingdom in 1971. In this audio-animatronic show, Mickey was a maestro while characters from a variety of Disney films performed and played instruments. Sound familiar?

When the Mickey Mouse Revue closed in 1980, it was replaced by Magic Journeys and then later the Legend of the Lion King that closed in 2002. Then, on October 8, 2003, Mickey’s PhilharMagic opened to guests and proved to be a huge success!

When creating Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Imagineers originally planned for Tinker Bell to be the star, not Donald Duck. Speaking of everyone’s favorite duck, his signature voice in the show was provided by archived recordings of Clarence Nash, Donald Duck’s original voice. However, his current voice actor, Tony Anselmo, was still brought in for a few lines that couldn’t be created from the old recordings. Also, for further authenticity, animators who worked on the characters being featured in the show were brought in to render their characters in 3D.

What You Need to Know About the Queue

Upon entering the show building, guests wind through a series of switchbacks. On the walls are pun-laden posters on featured characters who have performed at the theater. For example, there’s a poster for Genie sings the blues, the Wolf Gang Trio with the Big Bad Wolf and Three Little Pigs, as well as Hades singing torch songs.

Guests will then enter a gold and blue holding room where they receive their 3D “opera glasses” for the show and wait to enter the theater.

What You Need to Know About the Experience?

Even though the show is called Mickey’s PhilharMagic, it’s truly Donald Duck’s show. It does begin with maestro Mickey scrambling to start the concert and leaving behind his iconic sorcerer’s hat. But Donald, of course, can’t resist using that magical hat to conduct the orchestra himself. As expected, things go wrong and he’s pulled into magical, musical whirlwind which drops him in the middle of classic Disney musical numbers such as “Be Our Guest,” “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” “Part of Your World,” and “You Can Fly.”

The show spans about 12 minutes; and while the computer animation looks a little dated these days, Mickey’s PhilharMagic packs in a ton of Disney characters. Also, its charm and 3D sensory effects are still magical! Even after countless viewings, I still love the piped-in smell of the desserts during “Be Our Guest,” and the jewels from Ariel’s grotto floating through the water just out of reach.

What You Need to Know About the Theater?

The theater for Mickey’s PhilharMagic consists of long, curved rows of individual seats facing the stage and the 150-foot-wide screen. Each seat is padded with armrests; there are no safety restraints. Don’t stress about getting the best seat. Literally every seat in the theater offers a great view!

Tip: At the end of the show, be sure to turn around to see an audio-animatronic of Donald Duck crash through the back wall of the theater!

What Do You Need to Know About Accessibility?

Guests may remain in a wheelchair/ECV to experience the show!

What Do You Need to Know About Health and Safety Advisories?

While some theme park 3D shows and their effects can be intense, Mickey’s PhilharMagic is more about charm and character than thrills and jump scares.

Still, for those concerned about the show’s additional effects, be aware the guests may be lightly sprayed with water and smell different scents. There is only moment which might startle younger guests. At the end of “Be Our Guest,” champagne bottles fire their corks towards the audience and guests feel quick puffs of air on their faces.

What Are the Height Requirements?

There is no height requirement for Mickey’s PhilharMagic!

Does Mickey’s PhilharMagic Offer FastPass+?

Yes. However, Mickey’s PhilharMagic is never a good use of a FastPass+. The show theater accommodates huge crowds. Most of the time, the only waiting guests experience is waiting for the next show.

Does Weather Affect Mickey’s PhilharMagic?

A June storm pops over World Drive as a rainy afternoon gets started.

No. Since Mickey’s PhilharMagic is presented in an indoor theater, inclement weather won’t impact the show.

What’s the Best Time of Day to Experience Mickey’s PhilharMagic?

This chart shows you roughly how long you’ll wait for Mickey’s PhilharMagic when you visit on a day with a given Magic Kingdom Crowd Level. The blue bars represent the average “peak” wait time (that is, how long the line will be at its busiest). The bottom and top black lines represent the range of peak wait times to expect (for you fellow nerds out there: it’s the 5th percentile and 95th percentile of peak wait times). Please note that these are estimates, and for a better forecast for your travel dates, see Mickey’s PhilharMagic Wait Times.

I wish they could just extend it a few minutes longer with some more recent characters.
