Chocolate Covered Bacon at the Poly Falls Short of Yum

The Kona Island quick service stand at Disney’s Polynesian Resort is offering a selection of fancy chocolate-covered bacon, priced at $4.00 per two-piece serving or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit. There are several flavors available including dark chocolate bacon, dark chocolate chili bacon, chocolate nut bacon, and a rotating seasonal version which is currently a Polynesian-themed coating of dried pineapple and coconut. You can buy individual flavors or a combo pack of all of them.

We tried the seasonal version. The coating is classic yum; the tropical fruit flavors and chocolate blend perfectly. However (you know there had to be a however), the bacon itself is problematic. The meat is a hefty slice that’s simultaneously dry and fatty. If you can get past that, you’ll contend with the prominent smokey taste that overwhelms the meat flavor itself. The combination of tropic tastes and a campfire’s worth of liquid smoke just doesn’t work. The tastes fight each other and no one wins.

If you like a heavily smoked bacon, then the plain or chili chocolate versions might be worth a try, but don’t try to get fancier than that.
